If no injuries between now and then, it almost has to be Coan.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Pyne play a bit in the first game.

Poor Clark. Doubt he plays a game at ND other than in the Senior Day game.

I think Coan as long as the season doesn't have a "train-wreck" quality to it. If it begins to look like 2016, you will see probably everybody by game 4, ending in Buchner.

 

I see three possible seasons.

 

1. The offensive line is good. ND has an 8-10 win season

2. The offensive line is not good. ND has a bowl qualifying season

3. The offensive line is less then not good, the defense doesn't take and ND has a train-wreck of less then 6 wins

Think we are getting way ahead of ourselves on this right now.

Spring practice will point us in the right direction as to how will be the leader going into fall camp,

Are we just gonna grad transfer our way through our current crop of QBs? Time to throw one of em to the wolves and get some real game experience...if none of them are worth their weight, fire whoever recruits our QBs

I believe this is at least a 9 win regular season team. More likely 10 or 11.

But you’re of course right. O-line will determine a lot.

I think Rees’ development as O coordinator will be even more important than that though.

I am anxiously waiting to see how Brendon Clark is doing come spring. I have not yet written him off.

Coan is the safest bet. He gives us the experience and ball security that Book did.

 

Buchner is by far the most talented and Clarke is the dark horse IMO. Don’t write off Buchner if he is as advertised, we might go through growing pains but it will be worth it.

 

I don’t think Pyne has a future here. Guys his height need to have either Kyler Murray type athleticism or Drew Brees’ accuracy, he has neither.

According to 24/7, Clark was rated .87 coming out of high school and his best offers were from Clemson, ND, and North Carolina. He’s 6’2”.

Pyne was rated .91 and had offers from Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Penn State, Michigan, Oklahoma, ND, and North Carolina. He’s 6’0”.

I know I can’t evaluate high school quarterbacks. I believe major college programs are better at it than me. I like Pyne’s offer list a lot more than Clark’s.

Clark could turn out to be the guy. It seems more likely to me, given his health history and the evaluations of other college programs, that Pyne will get more playing time than Clark.

I do read that Clark has a stronger arm, and he has 2 inches on Pyne. DomerDomain has had its share of discussions about what characteristics are required to be a successful starting QB at ND. A strong arm and a little height are sought-after commodities. If he can merge those attributes with everything else that’s required, and stay healthy, then great for him and great for ND.

Pyne has a great offer list, but we all evaluate positions differently and qb is the toughest. Just look at our short qbs, what would Book be without his legs? What would Golson be without his rocket arm and elusiveness? Short qbs need to be exceptional in one thing, Pyne might have the accuracy but that’s yet to be seen. I also think he’s well under 6’0.

 

I really don’t care who emerges, as long as they win games and can elevate the qb position. Safest bet is Coan and transition to Buchner.

If it’s not Coan then that was a wasted scholly and it’s another example that BK can’t teach a kid a new system in 1 year.

1) No its not, there are no limits this year and he will be gone next year anyway. It doesnt hurt numbers at all

I am hoping Buchner takes it in Spring ball and the rest is history.

I agree with you that it was not a waste of a scholarship. With basically zero QB experience returning we needed someone like Coan. A transfer was the number one priority once Book told the coaches he would not be returning. Btw I think there is actually a limit to the number of scholarships for 2021. You can only exceed the 85 by the number of players that would have otherwise had no eligibility left. So for ND I think the number was 13 players would have used all their eligibility if it was for the Covid rule change. So ND would be allowed 98 scholarship players in 2021.
