jbrown_9999
I guess this year was about quantity instead of quality.
golson5
Got a lot of both quality and quantity. Really good class again
tneun89
It's a good, but not great class. I don't think this gets ND any closer to elite status when you stack it up against the classes of Alabama, OSU, Clemson (which are truly ridiculous classes BTW). They currently have the 9th best class in the country according to 247 Composite, but when you rank the teams by average player rating (which I've done in the past to show ND is consistently landing Top 10 classes, despite often being outside the Top 10 on 247 and Rivals), then ND is actually ranked 14th. 1. Alabama (94.90) 2. Ohio State (94.52) 3. Clemson (94.02) 4. Georgia (93.50) 5. Oklahoma (93.19) 6. LSU (92.61) 7. Oregon (92.35) 8. Texas A&M (91.86) 9. USC (91.78 ) 10. North Carolina (91.02) 11. Miami (90.48 ) 12. Florida (90.38 ) 13. Michigan (90.30) 14. Notre Dame (89.69) 15. Tennessee (89.17) 16. Wisconsin (89.04) 17. Penn State (89.07) 18. Texas (88.87) 19. Florida State (88.54) 20. Nebraska (87.65) ND has 27 commits, which is extremely high, as they usually average in the low 20s each cycle (2018 class being an exceptions, which was 27 as well). Having guys like Josh Bryan (K, .8189) and Ron Powlus III (QB, .8126) - guys that could be PWOs - hurts the average player rating. But other teams probably have similar players, so you can't just eliminate those guys, but for reference, if you eliminate Bryan and Powlus from the commit list, ND has 90.36 average player rating, which would put them a spot or two higher in the rankings. I think ND's offensive class is really good. Love Buchner - he was a fringe 5-star, then had a really bad camp and dropped below the Top 50. He's a really talented player. I would put ND's OL up against any other class in the country, except Alabama. Fisher and Spindler are Top 100/Top 50 guys all day. Love Alt's potential, and Caleb Johnson and Pat Coogan could be starters down the road. ND needs more elite skill talent and got that with Lorenzo Style and Deion Colzie. I'm higher on Jayden Thomas than some. I also think Estime and Diggs are really nice additions to the RB room - Diggs is incredibly underrated IMO. Berrong was the #1 TE on both ESPN and Rivals when the rankings first came out, but he's dropped pretty consistently. Not sure why - his offer list screams elite. I'd give the offensive class an A-. ND could have used another truly elite WR (like Donte Thornton), and Shipley would have been an elite RB. I think the defensive class is where it gets sketchy. I'm a huge fan of Rubio and Kollie. I like the pieces ND added in the secondary - Walters, Barnes, Tucker, Riley, Gee (former LSU commit), and Jojo Johnson. I think Barnes and Tucker are two guys who should be 4-stars. That said, ND really needs more elite talent at CB and S - they need to address that in 2022. ND also needs to do better at DE - Onye could be an Ogundeji type guy, but he's 2-3 years away from contributing. I'm curious to see what ND gets in Schweitzer and Aupiu - they're both 3-stars but could be really good after a year or two with Balis. As I said, I think this is a good class, but not elite. ND can make the CFP with these guys, but can they beat Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson? I think they need more elite recruits, especially on defense. Freeman is doing a good job and is getting in on some Top 100 guys in 2022, so defensive recruiting should be on the uptick. On offense, ND needs to keep landing Top 150/Top 100 guys at RB and WR - need a high caliber offense to win it all in today's game. ND is doing better in recent cycles (Chris Tyree, Jordan Johnson, Michael Mayer, Lorenzo Styles, Deion Colzie), but that's another area where ND is far behing Alabama, Ohio State, and Clemson. corysold
How much were these effected because of COVID? I imagine with no camps for a year and many not playing a senior season, the rankings probably are going to suffer some this year, correct? It’ll be really interesting to see how the 2021 and 2022 classes play out. I think the rankings will be fairly inaccurate compared to all other cycles because of no camps, some states not having football, etc. And it’ll go both ways - there will be more lower ranked guys who are steals and higher ranked guys who are busts because evaluators (professional recruiting services and programs) don’t have as much film as they usually do. Not as much exposure for recruits this cycle.
Big23Head
Several things happening here. ND did not settle for any of these 3 stars, they chose a lot of them. The 3 star quality that ND has landed this year is much better than the past. Evaluations this year are difficult with many players not playing or having camps to attend. To me the reaches are Powlus, Onye, and Johnson. I think the rest can play ball.
FaithInIrish Forever
Elston said today on a given year only 50 of the top 100 can get into ND. If thats true it really is hard sledding to get in the top 5.

Take out a likely walk on when scholarshio numbers return to normal in Powlus and tge kicker, probably puts us top 10 in avg rating
