Interesting stat from PFF:

Most snaps played by OL in the NFL this season:

1. Notre Dame - 5.3k

2. Wisconsin - 5.2k

3. Ohio State - 4.8k

4. Georgia - 4.2k

5. Florida - 4.1k

6. LSU - 4.0k

Not a surprise that ND tops the list since many of the Irish OL in the NFL are considered top shelf OL performers (both Martins, Q, Stanley, even McGlinchey is considered an excellent run blocker despite his trouble this season pass blocking) so they all are full-time starters. Add players like Sam Mustipher, Alex Bars, and Sam Young getting snaps as at least part-time starters, and it adds up.

(BTW, an NFL team probably has about 800 to 900 offensive snaps each season)

What surprises me is that Alabama is not on this list since they have had 11 OL drafted since 2013.

Even if some players lose snaps in 2021 (Young?), ND should be able to make a run at keeping the top spot since they should have 4 OL get drafted. Hopefully Stanley can come back healthy and McGlinchey can regain at least some of his pass blocking form.

Thanks for the post. Yes interesting that Alabama did not make it. If most of us were to guess I bet we probably would have guessed at least 3 or 4 of those top 5 schools.

I think changing there gameplan has changed what there o-line was all about. They used to be run heavy beat people up. Now they have playmakers everywhere and their o-line is more pass-block happy. Those guys don’t work out as much in the NFL. Just my opinion though.

It looks as if whoever pulled those numbers might have left Alabama off and Alabama would have had the most snaps in 2020.

I was curious and so looked up Alabama OL players in NFL (note that the 2020 season snap counts include first week of playoff games) - Stats from https://www.pro-football-reference.com/

Andre Smith - Opted out for Covid Ravens - 0 snaps

Jonah Williams - Started 10 games then injured Bengals - 633 snaps

Jedrick Wills - Started 15 games Browns - 958 snaps

Ryan Kelly - Started 15 games Colts - 1008 snaps

Cam Robinson - Started 16 games Jags - 974 snaps

Ross Pierschbacher - Eagles - 1 snap

JC Hassenauer - Started 4 games Steelers - 304 snaps

By comparison, Notre Dame

Zach Martin - Started 10 games Cowboys - 618 snaps

i dont think this is a big surprise....we have been having consitent high drafts of our best oline over the last years....

we have to be doing something right to win as many as we do even if we fall short in the big games....

we really EXCEL in OLINE in TE and lately in WR as well....

We tend to fall short of the stellar players at DL...although thats improved....at defensive back.... and at quarterback unfortunately....

Also its worth noting that our running backs are VERY successful here and not quite good enough to have success in the NFL....i think the major reason for so much success by our RBs at the college level and so little in the NFL circles right back to the premise...OLINE players have been good for us.

a stellar QB and a lack of stellar CBs probably underpins our falling just a bit short from having great teams.

I think this is why Kelly/Rees are going to more of a Wisconsin style offense. I know some will be like its just a coincidence but Jack Coan started there. We were alright up front against Bama. We didn't win every battle but few do.

We'll reload that unit somewhat this year, but I don't it will be bad. We've recruited great size there. Now will it boarder on great, probably not.

Good but not great continues but that how the team has been under Kelly that last big step has elluded us.
