From an article in the Observer:

Here are the average points per game of teams who made the College Football Playoff in 2018 and 2020.

2018: 48.4, 31.4, 44.3, 45.6

2020: 43.5, 48.5, 33.4, 41.0

Any guesses which team was the one that scored the fewest points in both 2018 and 2020?

A few years ago, Saban figured out he needed to add an explosive offense to a great defense to win NCs in today's game. So he went out and changed his team's offensive scheme as a result and recruited QBs who could throw down field.

Kelly seems to be a few years behind and seems to dislike QBs with big arms since he chose Rees and Book as his QBs for 5 1/2 of his 11 seasons and just picked up another game manager via the transfer portal who will probably start in 2021.

Is Kelly's offense suitable to win a NC? Is it just good enough to get to the CFP but not win it all?

Kelly’s offense needs talent. Game breaking players at the WR, RB, and QB positions. Kelly’s issue is that has never had all 3 at one time and arguably never at the QB position.

Great point! You gotta have the horses to win the race and right now ND is only cashing tickets to place and show. They are in the running but just can't crack the whip down the homestretch to cross the finish line first and cash that win ticket

Yes.......I like Rees but it frustrates me we went with a coordinator with zero experience. I believe the last two games showed that fact he still learning. The ND O coordinator position should not be a learning on the job type job. Obviously you are always learning but not to the extent he has too.

Its personnel more then plays. He has all sorts of plays available but difference is Bama had a Davante Smith, Mechi and others.

Excellent players make coaches ELITE

Good players make coaches GOOD

While we are on the topic

Scheme Changes with Jack Coan.

  1. Coan is a taller drop back qb with a quick release
  2. Coan will be able to see Mayer running open on the seam route because Jack is taller.
  3. Coan will read defenses well influencing safeties with pump and head and shoulder fakes
  4. Tyree needs to catch the ball in the slot or flat for Coan, so both Kyren and Tyree can be on the field at once.
  5. Coan will be accurate on short and intermediate throws. He will not have a huge improvisation or deep ball escape hatch

ELITE coaches recruit and develop excellent players

Kelly has had 11 years and I believe that collectively his QBs have gone on to play a total of 18 games in the NFL.

From a QB development perspective, there seems to be no thought given to trying to groom players for future seasons. Kelly's second and third string QBs together have completed a total of 3 passes in their entire college careers. Forget about Clemson having four QBs with more completions and attempts than ND's backups, even their punter had better passing stats than either ND backup QB.

Trevor Lawrence QB - 231/334 for 3153 yards

D.J. Uiagalelei QB - 78/117 for 914 yards

Hunter Helms QB - 9/12 for 77 yards

Taisun Phommachanh QB - 5/17 for 17 yards

Will Spiers P - 2/3 for 13 yards

Amari Rodgers WR - 1/1 for 8 yards

Ian Book QB - 228/353 for 2830 yards

Drew Pyne QB - 2/3 for 12 yards

Brendon Clark QB - 1/3 for 7 yards

A lot is riding on Coan since Tyler Buchner basically only played one season at QB in high school two seasons ago and Pyne and Clark were never given a chance to get any experience.

I hope Kelly proves me wrong but I've never seen him as an ELITE coach. Rather a good coach that has short windows with very good teams and then is slightly above average until the windows open again.

Tough question. Maybe Kelly is making the scheme conservative when his skill players are less dynamic. Seems to me that when the Irish had players like Fuller, Floyd, Tate, etc the offense was really good.

2015 he mighta had all three but they decided to keep BVG

Do we go back to the RPO?

They need a top QB recruit and actually develop him. My guess is solving this issue would put them within a FG-5 points of the top scoring offenses.

Was never a big fan of BK's 4 vertical type passing attack but we have seen ND taper that back a bit in the past year or so..

I am still wondering where this up tempo offence that made him a hot commodity at Cincy is. We have enough depth where we can roll out defensive players in the instance they get gassed.

The offence is stale and seems overly simplistic. We should be able to stretch defenses next year with our receiving core. O line and QB will be a huge question.

BK is predictable and will probably start Coan, but I’ve never been more confident in a QB recruit than Buchner. This guy is the new age qb, tall, strong arm and a very good athlete. Freshman qbs are succeeding, let the best man win.

He got complacent after he landed the high profile high paying job.

He never had a tempo offense. It was an explosive play vertical passing game. I can show you the the numbers to prove it if you like.
