I see the chicken little’s are out again. No surprise.

Folks, the sooner you come to grips and embrace that we are who we are, the better.

We aren’t going to bend academic rules, we aren’t going to recruit knuckleheads.

Embrace the success we have had. We haven’t been a top tier team since 1993. Almost 30 years. I will concede that there have been some embarrassment over the years, but ten win seasons are far better than five win ones.

2012 Alabama was the night I packed up my expectations for good and enjoyed the ride. I didn’t expect us to win the first time against Clemson; I didn’t even more yesterday.

Does that make me a fairweather fan? Nope. I’m as Irish as they come. If anyone has been around here as long as I have, you may remember the very heated “realists vs. optimists” debates. I chose to keep it real. We are not playing on an even field with the likes of the Clemsons and Alabamas of the college football world.

Embrace the successes and efforts our players HAVE had. Celebrate the fact we came out of a crazy season with just one loss. Embrace the fact that we have players who give their all for our enjoyment. Embrace the fact that we are once again playing with attitude, a chip on our shoulder and some swagger.

Perhaps one day the stars align and we shoot for the moon, but until then - enjoy the ride, the turbulence and the occasion burn up on re-entry.

Merry Christmas, “loyal” sons and daughters. Love and peace to all...yes, even you...

That’s a tough reality to accept but you’re right.

So accept being second tier? Ok....”we’re second tier! We’re second tier!” That has a good ring to it and goes right along with the trophy participation theology of today.

Why fight it?!?!

I think there are plenty of Elite QB’s that are out there that should be able to get into ND without bending the rules. We still might not win a NC with an elite QB, but I think we would be more competitive.

Who first tier? This year Clemson and Alabama. Who else just curious? I think the drop off is tremendous between 2-3 teams and everyone else. You act like there is ten tier 1 teams or something. Clem and Bama tier 1 every year btw along with OSU, Oklahoma ( who ND is on par with honestly) and a LSU now and again. Every other team on any given year is tier 2 or 3 or whatever your metric.

This thread again....

I laugh at this notion that we should just embrace what it is. You take away this football program and you will see that small Catholic school disappear from the mid-west in about 10 years. They can try to be Harvard of the mid-west but it's not happening. The only reason they are still hell bent on trying to institute this "higher learning" non-sense is that they have the funds from the "football" program. If they didn't think football was that important then they wouldn't of hired Lou after Faust. They would of just let the program die. They know better. If ND fans stop going to games and buying merchandise you better believe these higher ups would do a head spin faster than the exercist girl. But this coddling of the higher-ups and allowing them to continue to run this false narrative is only making it worse.

Also, if the football program wasn't important, why did BK feel the burner after that 4-8 season? Football matters. Don't let them fool you. They just won't change because they know people are still accepting 10 win bogus seasons which allow them to get to big bowl game(money), only to get blown out. When the committee stops putting ND in "BIG" games because of constant blow-outs and when fans start complaining and stop going to games and buying merchandise, you'll see a change in how much they think football is important. But whatever..

I think there are plenty of Elite QB’s that are out there that should be able to get into ND without bending the rules. We still might not win a NC with an elite QB, but I think we would be more competitive.

I agree Francus. Trevor Lawrence, Mac Jones, Justin Fields and Kyle Track are not knuckleheads. There are plenty of quality quarterbacks that meet NDs academic standards. Do you think it is coincidence that Dabo, Saban and Day\Urban get big time quarterbacks? The highest rated quarterback

ND has recruited under Rees was Jurkoveck and they let him go. Rees needs to do etter than projects. Maybe Buchner is the answer - we will see.

I see the chicken little’s are out again. No surprise.

They’ve come a long way since 2012. It’s tough to stomach these blowouts, but they can win a title in the next 10 yrs. it’s going to take some luck, and Saban retiring, but it can be done.

i'll take a 10 win season every year.

I won’t accept NEVER being able to win a title. I do think being a consistent 10 win team is a great achievement under the restrictions.

Boom! you hit the nail on the head. We are among the elite tier

I write this differently but i Say it the same brother.. We get what we deserve. We earned number 4 and there is a gap. Guess what there is a gap between Bama and Texas A&M too.

So we play the two big bullies. Have beaten 1. Irish can't see what the top looks like unless they play them..

Let's go..

The main reason that Alabama and Clemson are "first tier" are their current coaches. In the past, with different coaches, both schools were down and there were different schools that were the first tier (e.g. Southern Cal, Florida St, Miami, and, yes, even Notre Dame)

While it has disadvantages in terms of recruiting, ND also has advantages. There is no reason that ND cannot become a "first tier" school again. Just like there is no reason that Southern Cal, Ohio St, Florida, St, Texas, LSU, etc. cannot as well. There is nothing especially special about Alabama and Clemson compared to 10 to 15 other schools OTHER THAN THEIR CURRENT COACHES.

In any case, given that Kelly will be ND's coach until he retires, I will hope for the upset win over Alabama and also hope that Kelly can return to the CFP next year.

Ah, no. Thanks though for the advice!

"realists vs optimists" debates... lol

Pretty sure it was the "pessimists vs. optimists" debates. The pessimists just called themselves realists (like they always do).
