Like the title says.... what are we lacking? It was pretty clear to me that ND is just missing... something. Jimmies and Joes? X's and O's? Throw it out there.

For me:

Development at QB. Ian Book gave it all he had, but was never going to be elite. Just not going to happen. Arm strength being the biggest limiting factor. Why is it that CBK can't seem to get a high rated recruit to develop year after year? He seemed to get Rees and Book developed, but they were limited physically.

Really you could say development of all skill players. O-line and defensive players seem to make it okay, but what separates skill player development vs others?

Elite interior D lineman will mask any athletic deficiency in the backend.

ND needs a Will Fuller / Golden Tate and a QB.

Also need depth at O line. O line has been **** since UNC game.

1. Interior d line

2. Game breaker WR

3. Top 25 QB

4.) more than 5 OL

I don’t know that arm strength is a problem with Book as much as it is being decisive and anticipation.

His balls have plenty of zip for a college QB. IMO

Big picture to actually compete for championships? Multiple 5 star recruits year after year.

Tonight? Offensive game plan and lack of any kind of offensive adjustments. I get it....do what you do to start, but when that ain't working, adjust, pronto!

If I was book, I would've went to the sideline and said start calling **** to let me get the ball outta my hands quickly. Clearly, Venables & company tightened everything up for this game, and we flat out were not ready for it and kept trying the same **** over & over again till well into the 4th qtr.

It’s all about the QB and the WRs. We don’t have anything remotely close to a 1st round NFL draft pick in either of those categories. We are too easy to defend by a good team with no real game breakers on the perimeter.

If you go purely off stars:

2. Has Johnson and Watts available but not ready. With Colzie and Styles coming in. So it’s being addressed if they pan out.

3. Same with QB....Buchner is Top 25 but was his competition too weak and was the Elite 11 showing a fluke. Either way they are trying to address that position

4. star wise ND has done great here recently. Will they develop to a new cohesive unit with 1b levels of depth. Maybe.

I’d say the team is missing elite coverage DBs the most.

If ND happens to make the playoffs, there will be 3 first round QBs and Ian Book. No offense to Ian, but that’s all you need to know with the lacking question.

The obvious answer is more elite players. Just an example, NDs DTs & WRs would be backups on the best teams.

I do think the recruiting has improved over the last 2 years but they aren't on the field consistently yet.

Hopefully the staff understands that they have to work harder than most teams to recruit for ND given the circumstances. Kelly can't or shouldn't allow any lazy recruiting from his staff.

Elite corner

Elite wr

Elite qb

More 5 stars

I don’t know anymore... I’m at a loss for words. If we go up 10-0 and convert the fourth down, I’m sure the game turns out differently. Only thing is the result is always the same, so the ‘what if’ game isn’t valid.

We can all praise Book for how well he’s done.

But at the end of the day, their guy will be the #1 pick and NDs guy might not get drafted.

That’s the difference between ND and Clemson.

The difference between Nd and Bama is the Uber athlete at all levels.

Otherwise, ND is probably as good as anyone else.

They’ll win a title when they have a top 10 pick at QB. They’ll never have the athletes of an Alabama to make up for lacking at the QB position.

He also needs to look in the mirror and ask himself if he himself is recruiting harder than his competition. Tony Alford was asked about the difference between Meyer and Kelly and he said the #1 thing was the attention that Meyer put into recruiting.

These two positions. i'd like to see a freshman receiver break out one year. Next years sophomores must get better.

Irish wave for the truth win!

Missing our center was the biggest issue against Clemson ans the fact that Ian didn’t take off more often up the middle.

Speed/quickness at WR. Lenzy, Keys, and Austin have all been busts as of today. DB depth is terrible. Crawford should not be a starting safety but they have no choice. Stepping up QB play to where Book has been most of the year but making it the norm.
