November 6, 20204 yr I'd assume this happens more often than we hear about, because what coach would want to come out and say "Yep our signals were so easier to decode they knew what we were running every play!" You also don't want to brag about being good at stealing signals because then teams will know they need to do a better job. Here's an example from this year of Saban saying Kiffin knew their signals. As a guy who thinks Kelly sounds like a moron a lot of the time during press conferences, I really liked his answer. We know about, we need to be cognizant of it and we need to put our players in a position to execute without the other team knowing the plays before hand. edit: Here's another article about how common it is Edited November 6, 20204 yr by Dardo
November 6, 20204 yr ND used to be really bad at calling in plays covertly. We went from giant signs to on-field meetings between downs, to where we are now with two red-hatted backup QBs signaling plays in. That last play with Kizer years ago against Clemson in the final seconds at the goal line still seems like Clemson had a heads up on our play call. I know Kizer's slow and all but nobody would have thought he'd be running it in from around the 3-5 yard line.

Stealing signs is part of the game and I hope ND has some folks whose job it is steal signs of the other team. (assuming that they are not violating any rules about using video equipment, etc.)
