I am happy we these notes, took me 90 minutes to type as I listened

Opponent: Clemson

#1 team in the Country for a reason

36-1 since 2018

Amazing Consistency

On Facing a Young QB

Normally you would vary 3rd down defensive looks and coverages in general

Most important when defending a Young QB

-Make them uncomfortable

- Great Pass Rush

- Make him move his feet when he doesn't want too. Mess up timing and

Delivery of the ball

- Cover easy throws(make him hold the ball)

Question: Big Games and Sudden Change

Answer: We're 29-3 in the last 32 games. Not easily overcome by the moment. We'll be fine. We have won 12 straight. I have confidence in these guys to overcome adversity.

Question: 2018 you said ND on the brink, where are we now?

Answer: We are 29-3 in our last 32 games. Have won 22 straight at home. Won 12 in a row. You guys decide.

Question: Election Day: Player information: Importance of Political Process

90 of 114 players have voted by mail.

Question

A. Nick McCloud- When did he turn the corner.

B. What did you see in 2018 to suggest that the gap between Clemson and ND was smaller then the score>

Answer

A. McCloud's acclimation to strength and conditioning took awhile. He fits in great with the ND culture

B. In '18 we had 3 young offensive lineman and young players on defense. The Next week Clemson Beat Alabama but we didn't here of a talent gap or coaching gap then. We have Clemson this week. Many will have opinions when is over. Who knows we may even play them twice..

Question:

A. Evaluation of Avery Davis in the slot?

B. Defense succeeding as a whole but not a lot of players leading individual statistical categories. Does that matter?

Answer:

A. Avery's been good for us. Playing Fast, Runs a sub 4.5. He's displaying that burst because his confidence is up. He compliments are Taller receivers Ben and Javon. Add Joe Wilkins and some others who will get their chance too and its a good group.

B. Our defense keeps the points down and limits big plays. They are about playing as a unit. I'm not concerned about individual stats. They play 11 as 1 and that makes them dangerous.

Question:

Confidence is high. 29-3 helps. Is the messaging any different when you are trying to get your team to take a step they have not yet taken?

Answer:

No. This game is not the End all. If we win this and lose to BC on the road our "arrival" is short lived. We have goals of improving week to week and our goal is to play very well vs Clemson but we have to also beat BC on the road next week to get where we would like to go.

Question:

Evaluate your progress in offense, defense, and special teams?

A. Offense- Nobody knew anything about the running backs. 3 running backs are doing a great job. Nobody knew anything about the receivers and they are coming along, particularly Ben, McKinley and Davis. A freshman tight end who had not played any college football. Proud of players and coaching staff for succeeding in this different world because of CO-VID.

B. Defense- 4 different combos at corner. Overcame graduation on the Defensive Line. Bauer, Kiser stepped up at Linebacker. Good complimentary Safety play. Lots of good things.

Question

A. Level of Player Anticipation of this Big Game?

B. How do you prepare for an opponent you might see again?

Answer

A. Need Emotional mastery. Each conference game counts as one. We are not an Independent this year where we need this win to put a stamp on our playoff resume. This is one and if we just empty the tank BC will beat us on the road next week which counts the same as this game. We know who Clemson is, but we also know its a long haul.

Question: Defensive Line: can we get there will 4? Does Hayes' improved play help

Answer: It helps when the QBs are pocket passers. Cunningham for Louisville and Travis for FSU were movers. If the QB wants to throw from the pocket we have confidence we can get pressure.

Question: Has the team raised the "compete level" like you wanted?

Answer: Yes. Defense controlled both Pitt and Tech. Allowed only 1 real TD in 2 games. Offense controlled the ball well. We wanted a steady rise not an emotional spike for Clemson that might put the BC game at risk.

Question: Will ND concern themselves that some of Clemson's top players are out?

Answer: No. Their 4th and 5th string are good. They're #1 they'll have quality depth. Just look at that depth chart.

Question:

A. Are you saving schemes for Clemson? As you were looking ahead?

B. What is Jafar Armstrong's position?

Answer

A. No. I don't buy-in to saving schemes. Venables has a new blitz every week. But we both mostly are who we are. In some instances you might hold back a trick play if you are up big.

B. Armstrong is a wide receiver. We have enough running backs, he can help us at WR when he gets a few more reps.

Question:

What Makes Etienne so good?

Answer:

Best back in the Country, Speed, Power, Great receiver, Complete player.

Question: Impact of Election day off on Practice Schedule?

Answer: forces Sunday weight Training and meetings and Monday practice. Less then Ideal with testing protocols. Many of our guys vote by mail. 90 of 114. It is what it is but guys will be trying to get in the football building by the afternoon.

Is this thinking a reason for past losses?

Is Kelly so worried about losing the game after a big game that he does not try to have the team peak for big games? Is this why the team has been flat for Michigan, Miami, etc.?

It plays a role. BK is not a motivator like Holtz, Swinney or any other top coach. Listen to his pregame or halftime talks and it is like we're listening to a Abe Lincoln speech. He treats it like it is a business transaction.

Abe Lincoln speech....lol....that is good and true. I live in Syracuse NY so I hear Dino Babers speeches all the time and he does a good job firing up his team......unfortunately he has no talent so it like blowing up a balloon and forgetting to tie the end....

I'm not sure if you listen to any of Mike Frank's Irish Sports Daily podcasts, but he seems to believe that when ND teams have been better recently it's been in large part to the players having some strong leaders amongst themselves. I think he leans too far into rah rah leadership being super important, but ND sure showed up against Michigan in 2018 and Oklahoma in 2012 and both of those were teams led by guys that we think of as strong leaders.

Kelly seems to attempt to make everything very business like so as to not make the team nervous, which in turn makes the team come out flat or even MORE nervous than they would be. I think it's a terrible strategy in college football, but it doesn't mean as much when you have guys like Manti/Zach Martin in 2012 or Quentin Nelson/McGlinchey/Gilman in 2018 who can get the team going in spite of Kelly's business like approach.

Now I'm not sure we know enough about this team to know which type of team this is, the 2012/2018 team or the teams that have seemingly never shown up in big games.

Edit: thanks for the press notes faith!

I hate how obnoxious he sounds when tossing out his answer to being "on the brink.

22 win streak at home and 12 wins in a row....against teams mostly outside the top 25 whose recruiting classes haul in less than a quarter of our talent.

Great work, man. Here is your statue.

Keep a game respectable against a top 10 opponent for once and then we will talk.
