Defense is still very good.

Offense will be centered around the running back.

Receivers are not a given.

Mayer really looks the part. Like Tyree too.

Agree Faith. Nothing was a surprise to me, especially the way this year has gone, and we were far from polished because of it and being the first game. I wanted insight about the RB and run game, the receivers, and secondary. Kyren Williams looked really good the more the game progressed, he ran good, caught passes, and did a good job on pass pro I thought. Very encouraging. Tyree looks explosive but very raw and not ready for more than 10ish touches a game. Jafar had a few good plays when he was in too, and Smith can maybe be the short yard bruiser.

Hard to see what was happening with the WR at times. Couldn't always tell if they weren't getting open or what. Big issue is Book's comfortability with the receiver corps and not having a Boykin or Claypool to bail him out.

DBs were servicable. Hopefully KH will be alright, and I liked seeing him moving around a lot. Having him and JOK moving all over the place really is going to make it difficult to gameplaan for having two athletic freaks who can do it all. Crawford had some ups and downs, but was in there a lot and was laying the wood to people too. The young guys had some plays and they got beat a few times too. What is going to help this unit a lot is the strength of our DL and pass rush, pressuring QBs into bad throws.

My new TE crush is Mayer, who looks NFL ready now, and he will be a huge asset going forward. He is going to be a nightmare matchup for defenses.

Very tough to win a NC without a heisman quality QB. Book is not that.

Tough to judge a new OC in a year like this.

OL looked underwhelming. They are an experienced group and I expected better. Maybe it was the receivers not getting open.

Might be the worst WR crew I have seen in a while. Where was Lenzy?? I am guessing Jordan Johnson has short comings causing him to not be out there like blocking, etc. Might have to force it if he is clearly more talented than the others.

Good to see Williams run and catch so well. Tyree is going to be good!

Mayer will be drafted in the first 2 rounds of the nfl draft when he comes out.

D is solid. Lea is consistent and I'm thankful we still have him.

-Jeff Quinn is not qualified to be our o line coach.

-Book still gets happy feet and struggles seeing the field.

-Williams and Tyree are more than capable.

-Mayer is our starting tight end.

-This team misses Kevin Austin, however Wilkins looks reliable.

-Hamilton is a first team AA, hoping the injury is minor.

-We have depth at linebacker but no one stood out.

-Foskey is our best pass rusher.

-The D is solid as a whole yet unspectacular. We will always be a ten win team under Lea.

Are Clark and Pyne of the same mold?

Both have minimal ceilings. Pyne would have a higher ceiling if he was taller. I really think they need get a Grad transfer at QB next yr. Buchner is the future, but he won’t be ready as a true Frosh.

Hamilton sprained his ankle, would’ve been able to return if really needed him.

If the NCAA allows all players to keep their eligibility next year as it is this year, then Book will come back for another year and Kelly will welcome him with open arms

Book of course would be welcomed back. But I suspect there would be major competition for the job by that point. And someone would transfer.

By the second half RBs were looking pretty good

Pass rush seemed to be there

Defense overall will probably be good

Ian is such a boring and predictable QB its often frustrating

WRs are an open question...missing Lenzy,, Wilkins showed good hands

Jury still out on the OLINE

Tony Dungee was a very refreshing change....he actually seems to like the irish thats a big change to the broadcast atmosphere....

FG was nice

Kickoff returns show promise

Bottom Line too early to draw many sweeping conclusions...

aloha

Based on his play to this point, there should be. Problem is we know there won’t be a competition.

- Book is solid not great, accept it. He can have a great game but will never be high level. Add in a slow start for the OL, RBs missing a few pick ups, no spring, no go to receiving target, and missed practices from Covid. It’s reality. He definitely could have been better, but it should not be shocking.

- RBs did their job really well today other than a few missed blocks. Could be a strength for this team.

- Wilkins was great today but ND needs that play as a compliment to Austin. They need Lenzy to stretch the field. He was out with an injury not Covid (he was on the field).

- Mayer is a beast. Him and Tremble could be huge this year.

- OL started slow but improved. They need to show big improvement into game 2. Don’t forget Kraemer and Hainsey missed a bunch of time at the end of last year and Banks just got healthy over the summer. They need to and should improve. Duke also played 7-8 men in the box.

- D was solid then great. Love the amount of LBs getting in the game. That will pay off down the road. Foskey is a beast, enjoy him. Enjoy Wu too. Hopefully Hamilton is truly ok. The secondary was good today and should continue to grow.

- Special teams was great

- Give Duke credit. They were a better team than I thought. Some nice players and executed early. ND made adjustments, buckled down, and did their job. We haven’t always been able to say that. Now they need to grow from this to see what this season can be.

Duke was coached as if they were ready to play. We showed rust that Duke did not. That’s coaching.

I didn’t realize Kyren got so many yards.

Excited about Tyree. Try him on a screen like they used for Rocket.

Very concerned about WRs.

Here are the facts:

Book is garbage.

The defense is decent against avg teams.

Our O line is straight garbage. Putrid at best. No progression whatsoever. We will get killed by any decent defensive team with talent.

BK and tommy Rees have no clue. None. We have no downfield threats and against good teams we will get exposed.

Same story. And now with the BK extension we sealed our fate for the same stuff for the next 4 years.

Ridiculous.

I saw ND play and then I saw Clemson against similar opponents and that is what I took away from tonight. One team that looks championship ready on week one and one team that needs a whole season to improve, you can guess which is which.
