Gave it the old college try....ND will be soon after...ND and UNC have a similar student body...

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced Monday it is canceling in-person undergraduate classes after a coronavirus outbreak quickly spread across campus. University administrators made the announcement just a week after classes began at the 30,000-student public university. UNC-Chapel Hill was one of the largest universities in the country to decide to hold in-person classes for the fall semester amid the pandemic.

The school said in a statement Monday that the Covid-19 “positivity” rate jumped to 13.6% as of Sunday from 2.8% a week before. Some 135 students and staff tested positive over the last week, according to the university’s online coronavirus dashboard.

“As of this morning, we have tested 954 students and have 177 in isolation and 349 in quarantine, both on and off campus.” The university has just four remaining quarantine rooms, according to its online coronavirus dashboard, which was updated earlier Monday.

How do ND and UNC have a similar student body? ND is like 1/3 the size.

ELDER06's comment makes statistically no difference - not that his comments ever made a difference anyway. Irishwavend's comment - here are the numbers.

* At ND, 74 percent of the students live in college-owned, -operated or -affiliated housing and 21 percent of students live off campus (Not sure where the other 5% live)

* At UNC, 51 percent of the students live in college-owned, -operated or -affiliated housing and 49 percent of students live off campus.

The numbers are different and can make a difference either way - good or bad. Both populations have roughly the same qualification requirements with ND a slight bit more selective - the kids will behave the same way regarding discipline.

End of the day partying is the biggest cuplrit along with following basic protocols and simple math. A lot of partying goes on in dorms. Dorms are tight quarters. School classrooms can be packed including lecture halls. Tight stair wells. Shared bathrooms. Shared cafeteria. Can run the numbers and estimate how many will be hospitalized and possibly die based on demographics of the student body and staff. At current rate 1000 people at ND will be infected before end of semester with X number hospitalized, X number with lingering issues, and X number dead. College kids are not immune with hospitalizaton rates 1/3 of 40-49 year olds. A lot of old prists walking around too.

ND Student Perspective:

https://wsbt.com/news/operation-education/notre-dame-students-share-coronavirus-testing-struggles

Duncan Donahue is a junior. Throughout the summer, he says he wasn't very concerned about returning to in-person classes. That's because, he says, he had faith that university leaders would put together comprehensive testing and sanitation plans to keep students safe.

Though he says he hasn't had symptoms or tested positive himself, his friends' experiences and everything he's learned since arriving back August 3 have drastically changed his perspective.

Tolly Taylor: “Are you ready to say as a student that it should go fully remote at this point, or do you need to see more?”

Duncan Donahue: “It should be remote at this point. I think we’ve had a week of exponential growth in terms of cases on campus, and with the lack of testing, I don’t personally have faith that the university has it under control.”

ND lives in a bubble, too. UNC has commuters. Very different...

UNC also has Greek Life, which is big for Southern schools. I bet this is one of the few times ND students are glad their party scene sucks.

So we’re going off what one student out 9k has to say?

ND can expel a girl/guy for falling asleep in the opposites room including off campus and

Paul J. Browne, vice president for public affairs at Notre Dame, said the university is prepared to suspend or otherwise discipline the hosts of such parties.

UNC Total Enrollment is 30,000. According to the numbers 15,000 live on campus. 15,000 do not.

Notre Dame total enrollment 8,500. According to the numbers, 6,400 live on campus. 2,100 do not.

However, my statement was this - UNC has commuters and Notre Dame lives in a bubble. Yes, students live off campus at Notre Dame, but they are not commuters like UNC students would commute from all over the city. Few if any students live IN South Bend or the suburbs. They all live in the areas immediately surrounding the campus.

Next, it's one thing to have 2,100 students off campus and potentially engaging in risky activities off campus. It's ANOTHER thing to have 15,000 students doing that and living much further away from campus.

I think a comparison is apples and oranges. If you've been to both campuses, you'd notice the disparity as well. It's pretty obvious.

Notre Dame suspends in-person classes after COVID-19 cases surge following off-campus parties

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/covid-cases-notre-dame-off-campus-party/

On Monday, Notre Dame — one of the country's wealthiest and most prestigious religious colleges — reported 80 new confirmed coronavirus infections, bringing the school's total number of cases to 147 since the South Bend, Indiana, campus resumed in-person classes on August 3, according to the university's website. Monday's testing data indicate a 19.1% positivity rate, nearly four times the rate that the World Health Organization recommends for states to reopen.

I would LOVE to see follow-up reports on all the kids who test positive.

Really. That would be helpful.

Of all the kids who test positive, what percentage develop symptoms at all? What percent require one or more visits to the campus health center? How many have to go to St Joe’s hospital?

And of course, of those who do go to the infirmary or hospital, what was the average BMI, and what co-morbid conditions were present?

The answers to these questions would provide meaningful guidance. It just seems like either no one is recording or reporting this information. Maybe HIPAA gets in the way of reporting it?

It seems to me that canceling the world for a virus that hardly affects these young healthy people is a bit of a reach.

But, I also understand there could be long-lasting health concerns for some. That also makes me wonder if any long term studies have been done about heart health on everyone who has caught the regular flu too, but I digress.

Of course, cafeteria workers and dorm workers and others could catch the virus. But, as employees, they could either take the risk and work, or not. The students? No tuition breaks for you! And if students around the country are indeed sent home, will colleges be forced to do a prorated refund? If so, tons of schools won’t be able to open for the spring semester.

Get the meaningful data and then make decisions.

Heck, warning, warning....

Prophylactic hydroxychloroquine for all students (before they ever test positive) just could save this.

Hawaii, you’re up.

Zero hospitalizations.

80 cases in one day. Good ole college try. Classes online for ND. Hope everyone iis safe including all the old priests walking around. This is pretty bad. 2 weeks expecting things to change is a waste of time. Plan for success.

Again, zero hospitalizations of the 146. You’re really rooting for this to fail, aren’t you?

I cant help but think back during the 1997 NBA finals when Michael Jordan dropped 44 points on the Jazz while playing with the flu. the players, coaches, refs, media and the arena full of fans didn't seem to care that they could contract MJ's flu but today somebody gets sick and everybody is sent home. If only the human race had some sort of immune system that could fight off viruses in the body.

Don’t apply logic to the Covid argument, Sir! Don’t you know that facts and logic are not allowed around Covid?!?

But MJ is immortal! Can’t compare him to us! It’s like comparing g Ditka to a hurricane. Ditka’s going to win out every time!
