I’m sure most of you have heard about this and personally, I think it’s been long overdue.

How do you guys think this impacts college football? I’ve heard some pundits say the power 5 will try to break off from the group of 5.

I think this benefits ND. What’s more attractive than being the qb at ND? Television exposure is more widespread now, however I still think ND is king in this regard.

The other aspect is ND on NBC. They have a consistent market and demographic. Hypothetically during 2012 a company wanted Manti. They could have run the commercial on NBC during the games all season instead of jumping around networks.

True but I have some friends who are NOT ND fans and never watch any of their games. So, they could lose marketing because of the lack of television coverage. It works both ways I guess.

agree but at the same time, how valuable to a brand would it be to have Manti pitch to them if they dont care about ND

Personally it scares the heck out of me. MONEY is right up there with drugs in my mind. So very powerful , it can change a persons ( or organization) life for good or for bad. I just hope they are very careful implementing this. I would hate to see the sport that I love die from an OD.

Im right there with you. How focused will they be on game day if making money is the first thing on their mind? There’s so many layers to this it’s tough to digest at the moment.

At the same time, you’re not going to make a lot of money if you’re not performing. Therefore, you assume they might focus more on football since that enhances their brand. If this is true, why would someone go to ND when they can go to LSU and never have to focus in the classroom?

There are so many what ifs, definitely making my head spin.

I take the perspective that our guys get the best athletic therapy, training, meals, education, exposure, life experiences (travel etc.).

All of this leads to a degree that opens any door they choose or enough exposure to help your journey towards professional football, should that be your vision.

This is going to be interesting. It brings up a lot of questions regarding implementation.

Do you pay all players the same for appearing in a televised game, because it's their likeness?

Does it create rifts in teams between the superstars and the rest of the team? What's the effect on morale?

Is there any distinction between this and straight out paying players? If the intent is to still keep schools from paying players, how do you avoid the inevitable boosters paying to use the likeness of players as a recruitment tool?

So many issues, and I don't know a good answer to any of them.

Set up a trust fund with some of the NCAA's billions of dollars and disburse some of it to the players when they graduate as compensation. The amount disbursed would partially be based upon the amount of years they played for their university and both academic and athletic achievement and honors.

This gets them compensated and ready to go for life regardless if they make the NFL or not. It would also encourage kids to actually try to stay in school, get their degrees, and to do their best off the field as well as on the field.

This would be a win for everybody.

This is a good idea, however the NCAA is not known to make logical decisions.

My worry is the boosters will get involved and some school will dominate recruiting even more. The NCAA does a poor job of managing this stuff now, just imagine what it will be like in a few years.

Notre Dame endowment: $13.8 billion

LSU endowment: $928 million

Endowments are mostly funded by wealthy alumni who care about their school.

I do not think that Notre Dame will have a problem with endorsement dollars being available for their football players.

I believe there’s going to be a cap on the amount of $ they can make. It’s hardly going to be anything life changing.

This is why ND will always be relevant.

Relevant in what sense? Because there’s a bunch of schools with higher endowments that aren’t relevant athletically in the slightest

Bc they have an athletic tradition and can spend big $. It doesn’t mean they’ll always spend that $ wisely, but they’ll never have to worry about $ when it comes to the football program.

I am surprised Texas A&M’s Endowment is larger. I guess Texas isn’t the only one getting that Oil $.

A&M is a very large school that annually graduates high quality students in business, engineering and other disciplines. My experience with Aggies is they're competent,hard-working and readily promotable. Their graduates are fiercely loyal and proud of their school--very much like ND in that regard. That the university has a big endowment should not be a surprise to anyone familiar with the school and its culture.

No one should be surprised based on what Jimbo and Elko were given.
