Is it possible that Brian Kelly is putting new energy into recruiting due to his pending contract extension?

Similar to pro players putting in extra effort in the last year of a contract, will Kelly's new attitude towards recruiting only last until his new contract is signed?

Otherwise, what other reason(s) can there be for him to change his behavior after 30 years of coaching, 10 years at ND?

Yes I can picture him now sitting around his dinning room table wearing those gloves with the fingers cut out counting large stacks of money all the while laughing like a crazy man with that red face he gets......oh and there is a picture of Charlie Weis hanging on the wall next to him.

His contract would be extended regardless. ND is perfectly happy with (mostly) winning seasons. He is not and will not be changing his approach to recruiting....and no one should be expecting him to.

Echo, Supposedly Kelly has turned over a new leaf and is traveling to visit prospects more and is also keeping in regular contact with recruits more as well. This seems to be part of Kelly's new notion (after 10 years) that ND might actually be able to recruit closer to Top 5 if changes were made.

I saw a reference to something from 247 where it said that Kelly had previously thought of himself as a "closer" and left most of the recruiting work to his assistants.

My question is whether or not this change in behavior by Kelly is permanent or if he will revert to his previous "low effort" approach to recruiting once he signs his new contract. I agree that he will get an extension regardless. The only real question is how many more millions a year he can add to his compensation. Most people would work a few more hours a week for a couple of months if it meant getting an extra million or two for 2-3 years.

If his true motivation is winning, then did he only start to care about winning after ten years? Otherwise, why was he not putting this level of effort into recruiting the entire time he has been at ND?

He starts caring about legacy. His own kids are getting college age. Not as much pull to be at home. I can see him giving this one last shot for glory.

So what you're saying is that he's decided to start doing what most, if not all, coaches of legitimate playoff caliber teams have been doing for years?

I’m going with the positive position here:

BK believes that ND is close to actually having a shot at winning a National Championship but depth of elite talent is needed...and he sees how Saban, Meyer have worked the recruiting trail and learned that he needs to be out there more.

As crazy as it sounds there are very few, if any secrets, in football. They share their philosophies and plans with everyone.

I had another positive spin of why BK would change this philosophy but I can’t remember what it is now. Lol

Anyway, Go Irish!!!

Reading the post about Herman going to BK triggered my positive spin memory...

BK is realizing he needs to be recruiting because his staff is ALWAYS changing, which happens at good programs, so he needs to be building the recruiting relationships throughout the country.

I am glad that after 30 years of coaching BK has finally learned that you need to work as hard as possible to recruit the best talent possible in order to maximize your success as a coach.

It is too bad that he did not know this after 20 years of coaching and it took him 10 more years at ND to learn the secret.

It's probably a different animal at grand valley and Cincinnati. Also it's possible that over the last decade at least at this highest blue blood level things have evolved with just how much coaches do have to insert themselves into recruiting

I'm not really defending bk here either, just trying to think about why hes turned over a new leaf now. He does have a history of taking his time to change his ways because he has the smartest guy in the room syndrome

He had his two highest ranked classes early in his ND tenure. In retrospect, I wonder how much of that was due to Diaco, Alford, and Martin? Kelly has also admitted that he and the staff started to coast and take things for granted which helped lead to 2016's 4-8 record.
