I pick a coach to study every off-season. This year Mike Leach has been a news maker moving from WASH ST to MISSISSIPPI ST

[ame]

[/ame]

Known for the Air-Raid offense. ND made changes on offense so he seemed like a logical choice.

Key OFFENSIVE stats according to Leach

1st downs

Leaders

1. Ohio State

2. LSU

3. Clemson

4. Washington State

70. ND

3rd Down Percentage

1. Ohio State

2. Air Force

3. Alabama

4. Oklahoma

ND. 65

Offensive plays per game

1. Wake Forest

2. SMU

3. Tulsa

4. UCF

35. LSU

72. ND

PLAYS PER GAME. is debatable at best.

Looking at the stats that Leach mentioned I can see why Chip Long got fired and Mike Leach got a new job.

We stressed OUT our defense in many ways last year being 70th in first downs and 65TH in 3rd down conversion percentage

This is what I've been preaching about for years Faith. The longer the defense is off the field the better. Keeping defenders fresh wins games and can help shore up deficiencies with D personnel groups that lack bodies by not burning up the few good ones you have.

Its vitally important to not have three and out series on O, let alone on multiple drives consecutively. Its killer on the D. This is one reason promoting Rees to OC gives me pause. Calling plays effectively and understanding the ebb and flow of the came can dramatically take a toll on the D. Rees doesn't have that handle most of us would feel comfortable with.

Agreed. we must control the ball.

I liked the consistency Rees had in scheme during the bowl game.

Premise was,

1. Iowa State can't tackle a back the size of Tony Jones over and over in their dime (1 Linebacker the size of Jones). First play of the 2nd half goes 84 yards.

2. Claypool is too big for them. Catch after Catch

Long got mad at one position group they were on the bench. Used a ton of the playbook every game, no consistency

As a Washingtonian.... for now.... I'm bummed to see Leach go. He made Wazzu fun to watch. I sure hope they don't slide back to 1 and 2 win seasons.

I’m not sure how he’ll fare in the SEC. it’s probably going to be weird for him playing teams that actually care about Defense, unlike the PAC 12 or Big 12.

I think it’s the exact opposite. I think he’s going their to shred them and bring the SEC up to speed in the 21st century. He’s going to be able to recruit because he’s in the SEC and he’s going to be able to get some really fast guys to run that type of spread that causes mismatches everywhere. The only thing I worry about is if his players are going to listen to his at times brutish coaching. Kids that don’t play school aren’t going to be locked in sheds and be ok with that.

Looks like your prediction is off to a good start. Win or lose today, he’s doing well thus far. Castillo was average at Stanford, looks like a heisman candidate.

Ha, miss state throws a td to go up 34-24 and they cut to Leach who looks like the qb threw an interception, no expression hands on hips. That’s Leach.

Also looks like my Coach O is overrated theory is correct. He gets propped up by the media bc of his personality, but he’s not that great of a coach

He hired an all star staff and they have no idea what to do against Leach and his napkin.

I’m impressed with the D always a Leach criticism. Crazy what a little SEC talent on d will do with a good coach.

Yep thanks. Just wrote in the opposite thread about this same thing. Didn’t see this one till to it was to late. So, I’ll continue responding here. Anyways, should be fun with him there. He’s going to ruffle Saban and some others feathers. Just wait. Ugly handshakes or bulletin material. Something. Also, I believe he started at Kentucky. He has some unfinished business in the SEC.

He did made Tim Couch look so good he was selected number 1, after that NFL coaches were like yeah.. maybe it’s the coach and not the qb. Ha

Interesting fact, he has mentored the coach of UCF, AZ cards, and Harrell who will be at power 5 school soon.
