Chip Long is exploring other opportunities and is unlikely to return to the Notre Dame staff, sources told FootballScoop Wednesday.

Long has been Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator for the past three years. Hired as part of a staff reboot in the wake of the Fighting Irish’s 4-8 season of 2016, Long has helped Notre Dame go 32-6 with a trip to the College Football Playoff in 2018.

Notre Dame’s numbers were up significantly in 2019. After tying for 47th at an even six yards per play in 2018, the Irish averaged 6.25 this fall (33rd). The club’s scoring average grew from 31.4 points a game last season to 37.1 in 2019

I’ve been critical of Long the past year due to the Lack of a running game, however I’m not sure if he deserves the blame. We heard Kelly say this is still his offence with some of Longs stuff. So I’m not sure we saw Long’s entire offence. Plus him leaving kind of tells me he wasn’t happy with the amount of say he had. In regards to the offensive line, I think Quinn deserves the brunt of the blame.

I don’t look to much into the PPG stats, we racked up the points vs some putrid defences. We didn’t do a damn thing of note against the best opponents.

I wouldn’t be to sad to see him go. However, it blows my mind that Clemson’s offensive coordinator just got hired from their staff. What’s amazing about that is he’s been with them since Dabo was hired Along with Venebals, that staff had been together since the beginning. So I’m torn on keeping the staff together..

I don't know enough about coordinating, but it always seems to me the Lea made adjustments and Long didn't.

There is some conversation going around that Rees would possibly take over. I could envision a co-OC with Lance Taylor happening.

Lea has been fantastic at this and really only has one very bad game. The game the entire team might as well have stayed in South Bend.

I'd like to see Quinn staying for recruiting but in a different role. I do agree ND can get a better OL coach. Quinn as an offensive analyst that can assist in recruiting was be ideal.

As much as people will complain if Rees is promoted, I think he'd actually be a great hire. He is on the rise professionally, and it sounds like he is on the radar of many teams, college and pro. He knows BK's system better than anyone, and I think he is a rising star.

Have to keep Lance Taylor - maybe as a co-OC - or at least give him some sort of promotion (i.e., running game coordinator). He is too important on the recruiting trail.

The biggest thing on this immediately will be recruiting.

Is this a ND decision or a Long decision?

Both. Sounds like this move has been known for a little bit now. I'm curious if they've told recruits or not as they have had visits with several during this time period.

Try to get an established Coordinator before promoting internally. We’ve all seen what can happen if you make a bad Coordinator hire. Don’t rush this decision.

I have had more frustration than satisfaction watching our offense under Long. Especially with the running game overall. I will be happy to see someone new that will hopefully get us back to being a physical running team.

I've seen this thrown around and I like it. Rees OC/QB coach, Taylor co-OC/RB coach, Quinn TE coach, and a new OL coach.

I'd be a bit leery of having an OC who hasn't been one at any level before. Luckily ND has a pretty weak opening 4 games next year, so they have some time to get their feet wet.
