Can we now stop the nonsense that Ian can't throw downfield? Maybe he just didn't have anyone other than Lenzy to get open quickly downfield or the OL not giving him enough time for a long threat to develop?

The play where he rolled out to the left to avoid the rush and threw a dart along the sidelines shows he has enough arm strength for college football. I noticed him being inaccurate on deep balls, under-thrown, or over-thrown like timing was off. Book doesn’t have a huge arm, but either did Ken Dorsey, and he could throw a deep ball. It’s about finding touch, and timing. Also you can’t overthrow Lenzy easily.

Im not ready to sing the praises of Book just yet, however he has been very good the last two weeks. I still want to see it in the bowl game vs a top 15 team.

There are two things I’ve learned about Book this season. First is he needs to use his feet if he’s going to be effective. He seems like a rhythm guy to me and the run game gets him into the flow of the game.

Second is something we all learned this year and that is he can’t throw in the conditions. Whether he has small hands or something else, we saw in the Michigan and VT games he struggled mightily.

Book is above average and takes very good care of the ball. He’ll win 10+ games this year and next.

He clearly has the ability. Our receivers were getting great separation yesterday. Just think it's more of an issue where he's not going to risk downfield passes too much unless dudes are open. Pretty understandable. Still think this offense could be lethal next year.

It’s not nonsense. He just doesn’t do it unless it’s against inferior talent. Further, do you remember the play on the first drive where he had literally all day to throw and couldn’t find anyone? They showed a shot of the receiver patterns and the corner route was open. The receiver was underneath his man and was in perfect position, but Book has trouble anticipating when guys are going to come open. He often waits for them to be actually open. So, what you have is two problems - the inability to see guys come open before they do AND the refusal to throw the ball up to our playmakers against the better teams. He’s intimidated in big games...

I agree with this. When defenses get pressure on him his eyes drop down and he gets happy feet. He will run out of the pocket far too early instead of staying in and keeping his eyes downfield. It’s one thing to do it against Duke and Navy....we’ve seen what he does against good, fast defenses that put pressure on him......broken record.

It was a nice throw, but there's counter evidence of him under throwing wide open receivers downfield. He got picked by VT on an under thrown downfield throw just last week. I think he has an average arm from an NFL perspective, but since he's smart and accurate will get a shot in the NFL. His biggest problem is his size, where he struggles to see when under heavy pressure from elite college defensive fronts, which will only be magnified if he gets a shot at the NFL. He is very good when he has no pressure, but until he shows he is good under pressure, both in the short and long passing game, he'll still be suspect from an elite QB perspective. That being said, he's our QB and I hope he improves as time goes by.

This isn't totally fair, but Book is a better version of Tommy Rees. Good enough to dominate bad teams with ND's athletes. Not good enough to perform to that same level when the other team has similar athletes.

Tommy Rees in 2013:

Vs. Temple 238.97 passer rating.

Vs. Air Force 260.71 passer rating.

Vs. Navy 174.64

His best three performances of the year. All vs. teams with way less talent than ND.

Vs. #6 Oklahoma 76.40 rating

Vs. #3 Michigan St. 85.97

Vs. Michigan 113.68

Vs. #11 Stanford 103.88

Notice a pattern?

Here is Book in 2019

Vs. New Mexico 257.25

Vs. Bowling Green 272.12

Vs. Navy 271.78

His three best performances by far.

Vs Georgia 116.38

Vs. Michigan 69.73

Vs USC 106.75

Guys like Book and Rees know where to throw the ball. So when those guys are wide open, like ND's players will be vs inferior teams, they look amazing.

When those windows close vs teams with similar talent, they either don't trust themselves to throw it, or don't have the arm strength to make those same throws. They then struggle mightily. It's a pattern for the two of them that isn't likely to change unfortunately.

Compare that to a guy like Trevor Lawrence. Last year, some of his best games by rating were vs. Notre Dame, Alabama and Texas AM. He has the ability to make the same throws vs. teams like ND that he can vs teams like Furman. That's what ND needs to win a title.

Completely agree, problem is 10 years in and we can’t find that guy still.

I understand that our QB of the future is a junior in high school so we only need to wait a few more years

Very well designed play here.

1. Long gets Lenzy lined up to the boundary(shorter throw)

2. Books back foot is pre-loaded

3. Armstrong in motion creates enough noise that the shallow corner is in a hurry to cover him

4. Lenzy gets a free release

5. Book catches the ball and shifts is weight in one fluid motion and throws the post in a perfect location out in front.

We've got to find ways, like this, to get Lenzy in the boundary sometimes. I know thats Claypool's spot but Claypool played the wide field last year. They just switched here.

Nope. Buchner is the best prospect Kelly has recruited

God! I hope Kelly doesn't screw him up. Oh, and my point wasn't that Book has no problems. It is just that he does have the arm to chuck the ball 70 yards and many have said he didn't have that kind of arm. That's all.
