Book Fear

Did anybody else notice the difference in Book between big time opponents and lesser opponents. Against Duke, he clearly didn’t fear them and was just throwing tge ball wherever he felt like. However, in Georgia and UM, he looked scared or intimidated, thus the lackluster performance... The kid needs to stop fearing his opponent and just play ball the same way every week.

I agree but he doesn't have a very strong arm, he lacks size and overall talent. The rush gets to you quicker, throwing lanes are smaller, guys close faster against the better teams. The game becomes so much more difficult against better conpetition and his lack of talent really shows in those games.

Everything here is correct.

Book has not regressed. We has simply hit his ceiling. He is not the guy that is going to win you a national championship unless you have an incredible defense and supporting cast of skill players. This is Notre Dame, not Alabama or Clemson. We need an elite talent at QB to overcome lack of talent elsewhere on the team.

Yes. Unfortunately, I think that QB is still a Jr in HS.

Or how about a transfer QB or graduate transfer who wouldn't have to sit out a year? Look at what Joe Burrow is doing at LSU. Or Justin Fields at tOSU. Oklahoma's last 3 QBs have been transfers; 2/3 won the Heisman and Jalen Hurts ain't too shabby either. If BK really believes that Phil isn't good enough to unseat a lackluster Book, then what's wrong with looking for an upgrade outside the program?

ND is just so comfortable staying with the status quo. Never making bold moves.

There is so much of this garbage on the board right now. Let’s point out every incredible success story and pretend how easy it would be for ND to do the same thing.

It is the same as every moronic NFL fan saying, “Look at the Patriots - why can’t we do that?”

Yup and there is so much of this garbage like what you're spewing on the board right now too. Let's name-call and put each other down for having a discussion on a DISCUSSION board. Isn't that the purpose of these boards? For FANS to talk about possibilities and DREAMS of success for our beloved team? What's wrong with talking about the what-ifs with each other? Even if it is far-fetched. People like you are the reason why this board has become what it is today.

While you have a point, the issue is Kelly’s ability at developing qbs. We’ve had multiple elite 11/highly rated qbs in Golson, Zaire, Kizer, Crist and now Phil apparently.

Personally I hope Ian transfers to somewhere like WAZZU this offseason as a grad transfer. I bet he’d look way better with a year under Leach.

Let’s be real, there aren’t going to be guys like that out there. However, I would like JT Daniels to consider ND. I think he could be a decent bridge into Buchner. He should have 3 full yrs of eligibility.

Book would be at least the top 1/3 in not for the Michigan game that destroyed his stat's.

WR athleticism and size is down with the departure of Boykin and Young.

Book doesn't have as many open targets creating separation and with a size advantage - Claypool and TE the exception.

OL is beat up.

Stop blaming Book.

I think Book finally got over that injury he had at Northwestern last week. Ever since that rib injury I hadn't seen him with the attitude of a gunslinger, more of a guy afraid to make an error.

Shorter QB's, Manziel. Flutie, Mayfield guys like that have to have that almost edgy attitude like "I can't be stopped"

Book had that for the games that he was an 80 percent passer.

Then you get hit in the ribs and can't breathe. He began backing up and scrambling sideways.

I'm not saying that injury was a physical issue this season, more of a mental scar.

Then you get better teams to play and retreating or running sideways makes you late,

I think against Duke he finally said the heck with this, the fanbase is calling for my job, I'm going forward, to the tune of 139 rushing yards

Now does that mean he could beat Michigan if they played again? I'm not sure BUT I do know he's been through the best and the worst of it, and I respect him for it.

Hes just not that good. No hard feelings to the kid. I appreciate what hes done here. But he's just not that good

Pitt exposed him. Clemson took his confidence. Now hes going to struggle against good defenses

I don’t think it has to be that way, though. He just has to be more willing to throw it up and let our guys make a play. Once he does that, the field will open up to find other guys who should have some space. He just has to stop playing it safe. He should really watch some of these AAC teams...are you telling me their QBs are smarter or more talented? No. They’re just willing to throw it up and they know the timing of the routes. If you’re looking for the open guy while the play is running, you’re doing it wrong, but it seems like he’s doing that often. He should have a pretty solid idea of where the ball is going and which defender he’s reading when he gets to the line... Chip Long’s offense works, but he needs a qb to execute it. Frustrating that our guys seem too smart for their own good at the Notre Dame qb position.

Book could continue to grow even with his limitations. But he’s got to be willing to take some hits here and there. He has happy feet with good defenses and doesn’t step up when they rush up field. He did a good job against Duke. He looked settled in. Not sure if that will continue.
