I wonder who is going to coach the safeties? Leonard would have been able to check both of those boxes.

Impact Coney at all in regards to staying?

I like the hire. lea is an extension of elko so the defense wont change for a 3rd straight year and they can build off last season.

This pleases me.

I am happy with the continuity. Any guess on who will be added to the staff. Rees will get the 10th assistant position but what assistant will take Elko's spot.

He coaches the Secondary with TL right?

I'm guessing a safeties coach will need to be brought in.

Love the hire

I'm fine with this move. I thought scheme and language continuity would be important in the transition, this should help things move along relatively smooth.

Continuity was the most important thing in my opinion.

This is terrific news. I think Lea will make a great DC

Deke Cooper... Or, we want our safeties to assault people, we can bring in Abe Elam... But, if we like safeties to play high, there's always Tony Driver. Punch em in the mouth? Tommy Zbikowski. Most legitimate former player who may be able to coach? Pat Terrell.

That list is just ridiculous... Haha.

Are we sure he’ll actually run the same scheme? He’s worked under coaches other than sellout (my phone corrected Elko to sellout. Too funny to change.)

I laughed.

Yeah, it should be pretty similar since he'll want to run something similar to what got him promoted in the first place. He's also likely smart enough to know not to tinker much with what has worked.

Well I guess this is the cheap route.

A lot of people think they will go after a safeties coach from the NFL ranks.

No names discussed really.

Personally, I be intrigued by Demetrice Martin. Former MSU player and UCLA DB coach. Would be excellent for West Coast recruiting.

Negative Nellie, you strike again. Go find another team you can actually root for and say positive things.

This is a very positive move on Kelly's part to keep the defense scheme the same going forward. It is very good news for the defensive players and I am all on board with this hire!

This hire scares the sh*t out of me.

I wanted a Home Run, this is more like a Double.

What scares me is that we don't know what were getting.

Lea is just as smart but less experienced. He is lower key but just as respected.

He'll need to learn more of the executive side and how to make his own reads.

I think we are lucky to have him.

It also helps that Elston is there. Like Elston or not, but he is close to a HC job. He's never been an actual coordinator, but he plays an executive role for ND as the associate HC and has a ton of experience as well. I know Lea will be the man in charge, but that doesn't mean he can't lean on guys like Elston and maybe even the new safeties coach for guidance in some areas.

With that said, Lea just seems like the guys with the chops to be very good as a DC. I think he will be great !

Love the move. Keeps continuity with Elko's system and he is a great recruiter. The linebackers were the best group of the defense. Coney's improvement from spring ball to midseason was insane.

Get an experienced safeties coach. No Tommy Z or whatever ND alum. Need to hire a well-respected coach and a great recruiter.

I said plenty of positive things after the citrus bowl win.

I suppose that rules out Harrison Smith retiring to coach the safeties at ND next year!
