January 9, 20187 yr Quit extending contracts for coaches who haven't actually won anything, pretty simple. We've done it for two coaches, one we fired the other was given another extension and we're still stuck with him.

January 9, 20187 yr Hey man that 20 point loss to Ohio State was really impressive. Extending contracts after losses is what we do...
January 9, 20187 yr Or have a loyal alumni who is a bad *** coach... That would help a lot. We had one...er... wait you said bad *** not fat ***. My bad.?
January 9, 20187 yr We had one...er... wait you said bad *** not fat ***. My bad.? All of these guys sans Saban, are Alumni or have ties to the University. I can't think of any ND alumni in prominent positions. Clement is too old and not HC material.
January 9, 20187 yr Author All of these guys sans Saban, are Alumni or have ties to the University. I can't think of any ND alumni in prominent positions. Clement is too old and not HC material. Do you think this has anything to do with ND de-emphasizing football for over 20 years now?

Having coaches with ties to the school certainly helps. Unfortunately we haven't had a lot of cultivation in the coaching tree department since Holtz. A thought popped into my head a few days ago, and I have thought about it before and seen others mention it. How much did our destiny change with one resume mistake 16-17 years ago? I mean pushing Lou out and promoting Davie obviously backfired for quite a number of reasons. But usually you can endure a bad coach and the culture of the program doesn't slip that badly, especially since Davie still recruited at a pretty high level. I believe that O'Leary would have been a good coach at ND, who knows if he would've won it all, but his floor probably would've been similar to Lou at about 3 losses in a bad year IMO. But he had that stinking error or lie, whatever you want to call it, on his resume and the university nixed the hire. How huge did that end up actually being and setting in motion everything that came thereafter.

January 9, 20187 yr Hey man that 20 point loss to Ohio State was really impressive. Literally the worst loss since the Bama game. We were completely dominated and the 20 (or was it 18?) point loss should have been much worse. I know you’re being sarcastic though.
January 9, 20187 yr Well, Tom Osborne at Nebraska for one example. Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by this. Or I'm really dumb take your pick.

January 9, 20187 yr Saban is just better than everyone else. The last 20 years proves it A Catholic who goes to mass every day. He should be on the ND sidelines.
January 9, 20187 yr A Catholic who goes to mass every day. He should be on the ND sidelines. He had no desire to coach at ND, not even an little.
January 9, 20187 yr He had no desire to coach at ND, not even an little. He was set to take over ND from LSU, the admins nixed the deal as I understand.
January 9, 20187 yr He was set to take over ND from LSU, the admins nixed the deal as I understand. is that true? I haven't heard that anywhere (not trying to be contentious, just want confirmation)
January 9, 20187 yr He was set to take over ND from LSU, the admins nixed the deal as I understand. I call bs. He left LSU after the '03 season, Willingham was coming off a terrible yr, but ND wasn't going to fire him since he had a surprisingly good year in '02.
January 9, 20187 yr Author A Catholic who goes to mass every day. He should be on the ND sidelines. Urban Meyer as well. The two greatest coaches of our generation are mass going catholics and ND flat out refused to do what it took to get either one. It's sickening.
