His stock is pretty high right now. Next years schedule will be challenging.

He's quarterback challenged.

No proven wideouts

Tight ends are unproven.

Oline needs restructuring.

Basically the offense is in shambles. The defense looked solid but now with elko gone who knows.

Being honest, it would screw us royally (unless we offer elko the job ;)). But he's in a much stronger position even if he sits out a year to "be with his family".

Buckle up boys, i think a lot is gonna happen before we kickoff in sept.

Please and thank you, it's year 9 and the only reason year 8 was saved was because of the new guy he hired that just walked out the door. The fact that the qb guru doesn't have a qb in year 9 tells you all you need to know, that and everything else you just listed

Huh? Not sure if serious. Though I believe if there was a opportunity out there for Kelly, especially a NFL HC gig, he'd be gone in a New York minute.

Zero chance any NFL team wants him.

SO TRUE! At least this thread provided me with a good laugh.

I'm not even slamming BK, it's just the truth. He's in his late 50s and proven to be an above avg College Coach. He'd probably be a very good OC, but that's a step down from a high profile college HC job.

agreed, no NFL team in their right mind would take him. if BK leaves ND it will be because he gets fired.

I think Davislove's GRIM analysis of next years issues is unfortunately well founded.....

Do all those difficulties translate into Kelly leaving . I doubt that, but its not an unreasonable speculation....

An NFL offer---I really doubt that as well but could Kelly SMELL another 5 win season in the cards and want to bail with his reputation still somewhat intact , its clearly possible....

aloha

He certainly could replace Rodriguez at Arizona

It would be short term devastating for ND....But if I am BK if would at least be thinking about moving while the getting is good.

Kelly would not take a backwards move from ND. It would be a NFL job at this point, to move him.

I just don't see it.

In my opinion there's more overall balance and talent on this team, particularly when adding in the incoming freshmen, than there has been in a long time.

A 5 win season next year would and should be the end of Kelly at ND, regardless of the D coordinator. The schedule is rough, but ND has talent and almost all of the same coaches returning. Recruiting classes have ranked 13, 15, and 10 over the last 3 cycles and the 2018 group is currently #7 (probably will end up 9 or 10).

Even if Kelly were to leave now (which I think is incredibly unlikely), any decent coach should be able to win 7 or 8 games with these players.

Of the 4 most traditionally difficult teams on ND's schedule next year, Michigan is in flux, Florida State is in flux, Stanford's recruiting has been 24, 16, 14, and currently 53. USC? well, okay, that's probably a loss, but that's even with Kelly as coach.

I say, go ahead and bail CBK. Go right ahead. ND in my opinion couldn't really be worse over the next 5 years and would likely be better 5 years from now if he did leave before the 2018 season.

But....but what about the second coat of paint?

Yeah. Coach goes from 4-8 to 10-3 in one year. That sounds smart.

Cannot give credit where due.

Kelly has a contract through 2021. Doubt he'd take a lateral move. If a program better than ND wants him, he'll be gone soon. Otherwise, ND will be his legacy. He'll retire a very rich man.

If you give him credit for going from 4-8 to 10-3 then please give equal blame to him for dropping to 4-8 from 10-3 in year 7 (so no one else to blame for 2016 coaches HE hired, schemes/game plans HE OK'ed, players HE recruited, DC HE retained, S&C program HE left intact, game day decisions HE made, etc.).

Seriously, I hate that "Give BK credit for his turnaround season." Um...his turnaround season, from his disaster...in year 7.

IMO, no coach should ever go 4-8 at ND in their seventh season as a head coach.

^^ This.

I give Kelly credit for the the hirings he made this year, but he has to be held accountable for the guys he clearly held on to, for too long. I don't think we flop this coming year . Anything less then 9 wins, he needs to go.

This was a great/ fun season, but mainly because last year was so bad . This year should be a norm, with potential of playoffs . Last year, should never happen.

Last year shouldn’t happen..... but it does happen everywhere

Happens at places like Texas, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Penn State.....

Sure they happen at other schools....usually results in the HC being let go though.

Agreed, and If BK didn't rebound this year he would certainly be gone.

He earned a one year get out of jail free card, but that's now used up.

One more slip and my guess its curtains.

Haha, You're right from the fans' perspective but probably not from Swarbrick's, who would be eating 3 years of his contract.
