January 4, 20187 yr Lea knows the scheme well. He should be the No. 1 option for continuity sake. All the recruiting on defense was done based on this scheme and we have Simon coming in as a perfect fit for the rover.

In a year or two it'll turn into a HC position for Elko at a mid levelish P5 school, and Lea will be the D.C.
January 4, 20187 yr Ok the top 25 defenses this past season here are the only schools we reasonably could have a shot of hiring away DC. Assumed no way we will pay the money to hire away an SEC and Big 10 DC. #5 UTSA #11 SDSU #13 VT #15 Fresno St #21 Duke #22 Boise #23 Wyoming #24 Troy #25 Utah Anyone on these teams that ND could go after and have success? http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/22 Edited January 4, 20187 yr by USAFA03_HUGENDFAN
January 4, 20187 yr Promote Lea. He would follow Elko to A&M unless he is promoted at ND. The players rave about him, and he is a hell of a recruiter. ND has recruited defensively specifically for Elko's scheme, so keep the scheme the same.
January 4, 20187 yr If they're going to hire an assistant from within, I'd go with Lea before Elston due to his years with Elko. It's gonna be hard to get a top tier guy, due to the fact that he'll want at least a 3 year commitment and likely want to be a part of a newly rising program, not a 9 year program that won't pay top dollar and still hasn't broken through to the top. They should have paid Elko.
January 4, 20187 yr This just sucks. Totally sucks. Welcome to being a Notre Dame Dan the last 25 years. Second rate and cheap.
January 5, 20187 yr I'm not opposed to lea getting promoted but i'd shop around as well. I do find it odd that people are concerned about continuity and players that have been recruited for a scheme. When people wanted kelly fired there were no such concerns. Our coaching wishlist didn't seem to take our players and what style or scheme they were recruited for into consideration. If we're a stepping stone program, lets seek out the up and comers. Notre Dame never hurts anyones resume

They should have paid Elko. It's also late in the year, most decent teams have their DCs buttoned up and the really good ones will be recruited as possible HCs. I would give Lea a shot because there would at least be some continuity. I agree Elko should have been paid but who really knows what his motivations were to jump ship? There are several nuances to ND that could cause a coach to head elsewhere that have nothing to do with coaching.

Late in the season and who doubts that Lea isn't being wooed as well.
January 5, 20187 yr That's what worries me too. Late in the season and who doubts that Lea isn't being wooed as well. When a coach recruits well and completely overhauls a defense(Or offense, STs) at a high profile program in one season, he's going to garner attention. I wouldn't be surprised if Lea has other schools in his ear. At all. It just sucks that it happened after just one season because all of us could see the difference. If ND even had the notion that anyone was sniffing around Elko, they should have opened up the wallet and made it attractive for him to stick around. Football is *the* major money maker for the athletic department(As well as most colleges). I just wonder if Jenkins is going all Monk Malloy on us and starting to de-emphasize athletics or something. It feels like okay or good are good enough these days.

January 5, 20187 yr You gotta look at Lea and Elston first. Not necessarily in that order, but what type of scheme does Elston want to employ? Outside of that, if you can’t get a big name, you need to look at who’s available and if the scheme fits the players you have. A major step forward happened this year. Why on earth would you throw it away and start over with a complete scheme overhaul. Need a safeties coach too.

Lyght can coach Safeties if Kelly Chooses
January 5, 20187 yr I think you promote lea. He seems like a really smart guy and the players love him. He knows the scheme and he’s young.
January 5, 20187 yr Some of the twitter stuff suggests ND did make a competitive offer. Could just be Elko wanted to leave. Some people just choose their own facts. You'd think nd plays on a high school field and the coaches have to teach phys ed to make ends meet the way some folk believe nd dont spend money.

I just want coaches that have a proven track record of being able to do just that, and recruit.
January 5, 20187 yr I'd bet money Kelly picks Elston. He was the only guy other then elko to interview last year and there's no way Kelly goes outside of his tree. He's going to use this to reaffirm what he's always believed, that you should hire those you're familiar with. Also I'm sure Kelly didn't love the idea that Elko was getting the majority of credit for this year's turn around. Bringing in an outsider who got all the credit? I'm sure that did his ego well
January 5, 20187 yr I’ll throw out a name since that’s what Cory asked. Jim Leonard DC from Wisky. He’s young and hungry and has had good defenses with Wisky. Has NFL ties and I’m sure could be a good recruiter. He was born and played for Wisky so it might be a hard pull. But most likely promote Lea if you can’t get a top notch d-coordinator.
I'm assuming Bud Foster, Brett Venables or Don Brown aren't available.
So who else should it be?
