I think ND probably has the worst painted helmets in all of college football. how many times this year did we have to watch the paint chip and fly off the helmets, by the end of the game some of the players helmets are mostly white. ND needs to get rid of that shinny or chrome style of paint (even iowa states helmets were chipping with the same paint style). time to go back to the lou holtz style of gold (shinny and a smooth polished look).

I noticed that too...I actually started noticing how the paint is starting to chip off the helmets last year. I could have sworn I read that one of the purposes of getting them professionally done (read: doing away with the student manager tradition) was so the paint won't flake off anymore.

I bet to save money, Notre Dame started to opt for a cheaper process because I don't remember the helmets ever flaking from when they were introduced in 2011 to 2015.

Rather than this being caused by ND trying to save money with a cheaper paint job, I believe that at least some ND players if not everyone started using a new helmet design that flexes rather than stays rigid during collisions (sort of like car crumple zones) to reduce damage to players' brains. I would image that the flexing is contributing to the paint flaking issue. Also, if anything, ND is probably spending more on helmets now than in the past given the focus on preventing CTE.

ahhh yea your explanation makes more sense that my guess lol

Makes sense. Either that or they started using Rustoleum metallic gold spray paint.

yeah I remember hearing that and that's probably the reason. I think they said next season all the players would be wearing them.

The other issue is this.

The helmets are repainted in the off-season. there is a temporary fix for the helmets to cover scraps but once it is open it is more susceptible to chunking. here is a video of them repairing the helmets in season and you can see how it isnt a permanent fix.

The paint is failing adhesively vs cohesively pointing to surface prep and other factors.

Painted adhesion is based on a number of factors such as surface prep (sand, solvent wipe) temperature and humidiity. It is also dependent on the use of a primer system.

If I were to guess they are doing a simple strip and enamel application, limited to no pre and skipping the primer.

A good paint system with proper prep should be able to handle the flexing. Paint systems are tested by using a bend test typically where a specimen is bent in half and also a scribe test.

ND should sic their chemical and mechanical engineers on the problem. Good real world application.

This might be a possibility..

I was thinking this as well as the helmets who had the gold missing had the sections of the helmet that were not solid 1 piece helmets.

OU, UGA, BAMA and others had really nice painted helmets that didn't chip, crack or fall off, ND should ask those teams what they use. ND uses 24 kart gold in the paint, that some very expensive paint chips falling off.

I thought the helmets weren't painted anymore? Instead they are using that dip process to put the graphics onto the helmet.

I've no idea the name of it or how it works, but I thought that whatever company they are using isn't painting, but adhering the graphics by another method.

Hydro Dip, but that isn't what we do

It could also be the plastic being used for the helmet, some plastics are easier to adhere to than others.

If the changed the plastic and not the paint system that could account for the adhesions issues.

We gotta find something to complain about after a win. LMAO.

Ryan Grooms couldn't take the social media heat on the helmets and called it quits!

This group has a ridiculously high knowledge level of helmet paint and the painting process....

He is going to work for the Helmet company Notre Dame is switching to..

Go back to the student managers painting them on Friday nights before the game. They never chipped!!!

Should be able to judge the quality of BK 2.0 and his first coat ?.

Those teams have solid, no texture, coloured helmets. The material used to make them come pre dyed. Ours are repainted post process so they are bound to chip.
