The committee is actively promoting P5 teams to schedule down. Beat up an easy schedule, don't get hurt, and coast into the playoffs.

This is bad for college football as its back to a beauty contest and putting up major points against terrible teams. If ND scheduled a low level SEC and a bottom dwelling PAC 10 instead, they would be in the playoffs, although completely undeserved.

The strength of schedule between OSU and Bama were almost identical. I think one was 45 and the other 48. Basically no difference

Bama is using it's credit in the bank from their dominance over the past decade. Very few, if any, other teams would have gotten in based on their record but the name brand has sealed it for them.

They opened the season against FSU. They sucked. The SEC is down this year so I don't really blame them for their schedule.

Yeah I dont think the evidence bears that out. Wisconsin was one conference game away from the cfp with a putrid schedule. Other teams with 1 loss were in the top 5 or 6 until they lost their second game. Yes, Bama might get credit for being Bama, but there was really no one else to put there.

Why would you want to schedule a tough schedule on purpose? I've never understood why ND thinks they have Alabama talent and can have this bravado and macho thinking with scheduling.

Nobody cares. Light schedule and WIN. Why the fvck would you schedule Georgia, when you have to play usc, stanford, miami, etc.

The next two years are going to be even crazier. 8-4 would be an accomploshment. Newsflash savvy jack, WE ARE NOT ALABAMA.

Looking at this list, the teams they picked are the only one loss teams in the top ten. Maybe all this means is that since there are no highly ranked undefeated teams, one loss is enough to get you in. The highest ranked undefeated team is lowly Central Florida all the way down at 66.

Outside of Clemson, all the teams picked are historical football powers/blue bloods. Those teams will draw viewers, ratings, $$ and put butts in the seats. When you get right down to it, that's what college football has become.

I think the big problem is that Alabama basically got rewarded for not winning their division.

If they had gone to the SEC title game and lost to Georgia, Ohio St probably gets in over them. But since they didn't get that far, they make it. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Would it have been better for Wisconsin to have not played in the Big 10 title game? Same idea in principle.

Keep the slot open, make bama & osu duke it out in a wildcard game, fuggit

Another reason why i think we should join the ACC already.

We don't have the talent to match the schedule

If we can go 11 and 1 with our schedule we should be in almost every year. Definitely wouldve been this year

Bama proved this year and osu last year even with average schedules you can still get in at 11-1. The schedule doesn't have to be ridiculous

Holmes, I think you're onto something here.

In 2016, Ohio State doesn't win conference championship game - and gets into the playoffs.

Rationale: "The best team should go to the playoffs, not just the conference championship winner."

In 2017, Ohio State wins the conference championship game - and doesn't make the playoffs.

In 2017, Alabama isn't the SEC championship game winner - so they get into the playoffs.

Precedent set in 2016 with Ohio State.

Playoff committee couldn't yet again give Ohio State a break,

so they gave it to Alabama this time.

I did like what Pollock said. We know that Alabama will not be blown out in a bowl game. Ohio St has been blown out twice this season. They have also been blown out by Clemson last season in the bowl and that would had been the matchup this season. I’m sure the committee thought about that.

Yeah from an entertainment standpoint I'm much more excited about Clemson bama then Clemson osu. Pretty sure osu would be just been smoked again. The big ten didn't score a single point in the last 2 playoffs, they deserve to be left out for a year

Teams with strong SOS this year simply did not win enough games to get in. That includes Notre Dame. Alabama and Ohio State both had fairly weak schedules compared to other programs, but OSU was blown out twice and Alabama lost one time to their rival on the road. Alabama very much deserved to be in based on all the circumstances.

Also: ND fans should be happy Alabama got in. It proves once again that a 13th game is not necessary if you prove yourself in the 12 games you play.

Agree with everything here

Agree with all and especially with bold. Playoff committee has shown conference championship win, or even participation isn't mandatory.

But any bets the rules change after this season?

That is not the one I've seen used by espn or anyone else

Okay. How about the Sagarin, which I feel is the best place to check schedule strength? Alabama’s schedule strength is 56, while Ohio State’s is 28.
