How could he have been committed for so long and the academic side fell though? Wasn't the staff a. paying attention and b. working with him on academics?

If he really wants ND, why not get him in to Holy Cross JC and then have him reapply next fall??

I feel bad for the kid but from a football standpoint I don't think it's a big loss, he seemed to be on the fragile side. I wish him the best and hope he proves me wrong.

Are we recruiting another back. Honestly, Smith isn't going to have a big impact at ND. We struck out at rb this year.

As soon as I heard the news, figured it had to do with grades. Shame as he seemed to be a motivated, high character kid. With the connections the staff has hopefully they can help him get into a situation which benefits him both on and off the field. Good luck to him. Was looking forward to the Thunder and Lightning duo of him and Smith so the question now is, can we go to our next option of a bigger back to compliment Smith?

He doesnt have elite speed or quickness. He'd never play for a team like Clemson or Bama. Watch the tape of their rb commits over the years and compare it to Smiths. Not even close. He's a fine back on a 7 to 9 win team like we currently are but people in this board are tired of that and want to take the next step. We need more elite and less just solid.

 

Imo we have 6 elite players in this class and thats it. Phil, Austin, Amendiola, Simon, Lamb and Allen. We need to be around the 12 mark every year if we want to compete with Clemson Bama OSU

I'll give Kelly credit that he's found lower rated players who have turned out good, Wisconsin and USC also offered him but it's not like they churn out NFL running backs...

 

Give his tape a watch, he's pretty good. I was actually shocked at the ratings and offers Stepp had because I didn't think his tape was all that good.

I've watched his tape....And don't believe every players offer sheet. Offers are conditional and non committal a lot of times...

Very few things annoy me more than people talking about some kids tapes as though they have the ability to draw realistic conclusions from them. You can cut and paste a video together that would make Wimbush look All World.

I'm not saying he's elite but he's no scrub. We also still have Holmes who is going to be a stud, I think were fine at running back.

 

He looks like a faster Tony Jones to me, as long as we have a good line these guys will do fine.

I also look at the camps and how they perform there. Also you have to project. Phil Jurkovec is gong to be a stud. I don't care if he is a5 star or 4 although he should get a huge jump in his rating. He has size speed arm strength leadership athletic ability. He's off the charts. He's an elite player. It's obvious to see
