That is the deciding factor these days I think in college football.

We can't expect ND to win every road game. It just doesn't happen. To anyone.

However, ND needs to win every home game. That's what the big time teams do. They don't lose at home.

If you win every home game, you are likely looking at 10 wins every year. 11 if you only drop one road game.

Ranked road teams have about a .300 winning % vs. home ranked teams over the last 10 years. ND is going to lose road games vs. ranked teams. It's going to happen.

What messed up this year was not winning the ranked vs. ranked home game. 10-2 isn't some spectacular season, but it sure is better than 9-3. Moving forward, ND has to go unbeaten at home if we are to expect 10 win seasons. Can they? Who knows.

Really? What messed up the season was laying a huge egg against Miami. A 34 point beat down for the ages.

The Georgia game had already been overcome. The play offs were in sight and this team froze collectively.

How about beating an average Stanford team on the road for change for 10 wins. We can't expect that clearly so this program is just treading water and going nowhere fast.

And the way teams schedule nowadays, most teams will have 7 home games with a neutral game somewhere.

Exactly. Winning your home games, which usually includes 3-4 easy game, gets you to 7-8 wins. Drop 1-2 on the road and you are at 10 wins every year, which no one would complain about.

No, Stanford isn't great, but they were 7-0 at home and 2-3 on the road. So like it or not, homefield matters in college football.

And that right there is why so many people get mad. It’s not that Nd can’t get to 10 wins, it’s why aren’t they?

CFP Committee ranks ND schedule as #2 in the country for 2017. I'm not saying it's too hard but it is one of the hardest. I wonder what ND record against Wisconsin's schedule would be.

9-3/10-2.

But good gosh, when you look at that schedule it is pretty brutal. But I'm not confident ND would have beaten both Iowa and Michigan, as bad as they were this year.

Wrong.

The problem we have is that we can’t win big games vs big time competition at home or on the road. No big wig wins against top 10 level teams since 2012 (Oklahoma). Our wins this year vs USC and NCSt aren’t top 10 competition. USC was completely decimated with injuries and state was ranked 13. Every top ranked team we have played weather on the road, at home, or at a neutral site we have lost—and a lot of them we have lost badly.

Who cares if you schedule 7 or 8 home games against pansies that are automatic wins just to pad your record?? I want wins over top ranked teams in big games. That’s what matters and that’s what counts. I swear we are the only team in CFB that doesn’t have an upset win/big win at some point. Everyone somehow finds a way to get an upset in every now and then! But not us!! We lose every single one of them.

But without the opportunity for a 13th conference champ game against a quality opponent nd has to have that type of schedule to make the playoffs

I was looking forward to mentioning ND has the same amount of wins over FBS teams that Bama does after the Stanford game..

But had bama finished 11-1 and so does nd who gets into the playoffs? Also a 12th win is a 12tg win to the committee it still matters

Wrong.

This is the truth. Not some pandering about winning home games.

It sure would be nice to win a big game on the road.

Obviously you have to win a big game on the road at some point. This isn't pandering for home wins.

But if you want to be considered a top team, you can't lose many at home. That is the difference.

No one wins all of their big road games. So you have to split your big road games every year and win your big home games. That's how you consistently win 10 games.

Thinking you can beat the odds and lose 2 home games and go unbeaten on the road is crazy.

No, why? Iowa beat Ohio St, why couldn't they beat ND? Michigan has a great defense. ND struggled with any great defense they played.

You think both of those games are guaranteed ND wins?

10-2/9-3 seems like a stretch. Who knows. Doesn’t really matter

Yeah we need to win every home game, every top team has a loss here and there so the Georgia loss is acceptable.

Now losing at home to Duke, Tulsa, Northwestern, USF... Those should be fireable offences.

Obviously you have to win a big game on the road at some point. This isn't pandering for home wins.

We have one big road win in 8 years under Kelly so we basically lose all our big road games. This is the problem.

Your point does stand but it's completely shifting the goalposts. Our problem is consistently shitting the bed, on the road against competent teams. It is glaring and obvious Kelly can't prep his teams to play at the level of the hyped up home teams.

I think that is sort of the problem. Kelly is 15-5 as a road favorite at ND. That is one of the better winning percentages in that situation. He is 3-11 as a road underdog. That doesn't look good, but it is middle of the pack and only 4 teams are over .500 in that stat. Clemson is 1-8 for example as a road dog since 2010.

The bigger issue is ND has the most losses, 11, of any team as a home favorite since 2010. ND is 38-13 at home under Kelly, but 11 of those losses came as a favorite. That isn't good. You can't lose those home games.

Since 2010

Alabama - 52-4 at home

Ohio St - 53-5

Clemson - 51-5

Stanford 46-6

Georgia 43-8

Oklahoma 40-8

That's basically an extra win a year ND is giving up to these teams, many of which are coming as the favorite. That can't continue.

Yes, a big road win would be nice, but I still think they need to be doing better at home.
