9-2 is kind of extra awesome because the team is quite a bit out of balance.

We're averaging 168.09 passing

290.45 rushing

If you have read what I think in the past, you know that I believe in a saying.

That is: Balance is key, and 200 yards is magic.

So we are fine rushing and subpar passing. Please don't think I have turned negative. At the end of each season I become evaluative which is what I call going strictly by the numbers and looking at how the team needs to improve.

So if I'm Kelly I'm looking at ways to improve the passing game. As you know, we are usually Out of Balance the other way. These are Lou Holtz,

1990-93 type numbers

Most of CFB is 250 passing and 100-150 rushing thats where the game has gone.

Elite teams will typically average both over 200 yards passing and over 200 yards rushing.

Wimbush is in his first year and I admit the passing game didn't evolve as I expected but I think it will improve against Stanford and on into next year. The stage was too big against Miami. Wimbush played scared. This will improve. I don't see a game next year with such a hostile enviornment.

I'm actually okay with a run heavy offense but part of the reason for the disparity is Wimbush's inaccuracy along with pass catchers having a case of the dropsies too often. There have been too many missed opportunities in the passing game.

It also depends on the defensive personnel you're facing. Some teams have good overall defenses, some are better at defending the run than the pass and vice versa.

I'm confident in Wimbush.

I think Stepherson needs to be the featured receiver. He also throws it better to Claypool and Boykin right now.

Boykin was a starter all spring and then they took him out for Cam Smith. He got hurt, there was alot of mixing and matching with receivers way to much actually.

we're talking two different things, but essentially agree.

I'm talking an output balance, you are on the input side

I am ok with the balance in terms of more runs than passes. I also prefer that. Takes more runs to equal a passing completion.

but our output. the yardage we yeild needs to be balanced.

I think it would help to use the TEs more in the passing game because they seem to be under utilized, at least to me. Mack has less than 20 catches after eleven games and I'm pretty sure Smythe has fewer than that. For a team that's supposedly "TE U", that's pretty low.

Year to year you play to your strengths. We are a better running team than a passing team. So, it makes perfect sense that we are unbalanced.

Correct you are.

just to add the stats:

Durham Smythe has 13 catches for 234 yards 18 yard average

Alize Mack has 19 catches for 166 yards. 9 yard average

so thats 32 catches 400 yards and a 13.5 adv

get them the ball more and there's quite a few first downs. Mack had some drops and has been used acrossed the field more than deep.

issue is lack of passing production, so its an area of improvement. Don't need to pass more just better.

Sure. I think this is one of the aspects of dual threat QB's. Very few are as strong in both areas. Hopefully, Wimbush will get there.

We don't need or want his passing to get better (or try to) against Stanford. Really ...it won't get better in that game. What needs to get better is the play calling and decision making. I think Wimbush needs to pull the ball and run more. Quicker hitting deception plays. Fake toss and go the other way. I want to win these next 2 games on his legs. Period.

I'm not sold on Mack as a true TE, he seems to be more of a hybrid TE/possession WR.

Smythe has been solid as a receiver and a blocker, that's what you want to see out of a TE so I wouldn't be averse to giving the younger TEs more looks at this point. Jason Witten from my Cowboys is likely a first ballot HOFer for being good at both.

This is most likely not going to be a playoff team so get the younger guys some reps while you can and get ready for next year. There's promise on the roster at a lot of spots and they need to gain experience to grow as players.

Those numbers WORKED for Holtz. Kelly ain't no Holtz and never will be.

The receiving core is evolving and the cream is rising to the top. Problem is I don't see a Will Fuller in the mix, at least not yet. Stepherson got behind the Navy offense and helped sink them, but he doesn't have the best hands. Remember the slant for a touchdown that bounced off his chest. Actually, he bobbled the touchdown toss for a brief second.

What I like is so much competition. Kelly keeps going after the great receivers and the next class may be stellar if we get St. Brown. Haven't followed the recruiting threads. What's the prognosis on getting him??

Better than it was on ST. BROWN. Far from a sure thing but someone who may come. I'd say less than 50/50 though we'd need to ask bighead or vegas. I expected a bit more from EQ.

Need to stabilize a good group shortly.

Even if we don't get him I really like the potential of these guys currently committed. I really like the last guy we got that had only 3 stars. He looks like a potential breakout with his measurables.

Kelly could win 12 straight titles a d he wouldn't be holtz in your eyes.

Agree completely. Doubt it will happen.

The Kizer to Fuller bombs were very rare in ND history. Hanratty to Seymour and (sometimes) Clausen to Tate and Rice to Rocket. Fuller and Rocket are the two fastest players ever at ND, and they don't come along often.
