Posted November 18, 20177 yr What do we make of it? Defense allows under 20 points again. Offense does just enough to win. I like that I can say defense holds them under 20 AGAIN. Wish the offense played more consistently. Win is a Win. Go Irish.
November 18, 20177 yr People are going to rip apart the entire team, as they should - that game was too close - but the defense actually played fairly well. Navy scored 17 points. Season average: 33.7 points Navy ran for 277 yards. Season average: 369.8 yards Navy had a 3.8 yards per carry average. Season average: 5.9 ypc Notre Dame did not play well, I am not saying that they did. But people ripping apart Elko are ridiculous. The one complaint I have is that ND couldn't get Navy off the field. I think Navy was 4-6 on 4th down. Our offense only had 7 possessions the entire game. But there is no excuse for the offense to not impose its will against Navy. Way more upset with the offense than the defense. Game should have been 42-17.
November 18, 20177 yr Reverted to previous years' form: making a nail-biter out of a game that should have been won easily. At least they won. I don't know how this will play with recruits who are sitting on the fence. Winning in dominating fashion is one thing. Winning like this does not win many converts. But still, 9 wins out of 11 games is pretty good no matter who you are, especially this year. Not playoff good, but pretty darned good. Will there be improvement in 2018? Hmmmm.
November 19, 20177 yr This is one of the strangest teams i’d ever seen. In hindsight, the def did a decent job, statistically good. I was REALLY hoping brandon would shake off all the bad mojo & play like a champ. He’s far worse than I imagined. Sadly.

I think Chip Long needs to do a better job of adjusting to his strengths. He barely ran the ball the last two weeks. I know he has a hand injury, but his athleticism is what made ND such a high powered offense the first 8 weeks.

He led the team on a one minute TD drive seconds before halftime and bullied his way into the end zone with extra effort. He kled the team down the field on 2 long TD drives in th4 second half that won the game.
November 19, 20177 yr ND could win the title game by 3 and people would complain it wasn’t a good enough win. They have 7 wins by 20+ points. No one blows out everyone.

Maybe i’ll reconsider his worshipfullness and disregard the fact that he tossed against navy & nearly got wr’s killed... Edited November 19, 20177 yr by imroc

November 19, 20177 yr There is so much vagina on this board at times that I get it confused with SMC. We didn't win by much but we won against a team that is easy to trip up on and who understands us very well. Elko is relatively new to defending Navy every year. The offense had a difficult time getting/maintaining rhythm because Navy limited their presence on the field which is completely understandable. They did just fine and walked away with a win in **** poor conditions. I'll take it. It's just annoying the amount of estrogen that comes flowing out in reaction to these games...

Yeah, it's hard to be disappointed but I came away with a "meh" feeling about the team despite the win. The D did hold them to under 4 YPC and they basically had no passing game. It just didn't have that feel as the game wore on. There were multiple chances to slam the door in their face but couldn't quite pull it off. I wouldn't say Wimbush is far worse then I imagined but he's not as good as I thought he might be at this stage. I've said it before, he overthrows guys too often and doesn't seem to be that accurate passing in general. Some of his misses were inexcusable like that little dump off to the flat(?) that was off the mark. Nine wins as opposed to four is obviously better, it just felt like kind of a hollow victory to me. Now I have to resort to pull for the condoms to try and make our SOS look better. That makes two or three times today I wanted a team I can't stand to pull off a W, it just feels wrong.

I liked parts of it mostly the defense. Wish we'd got more running backs touches. I know Josh is good but 1300 yards regardless of the carry numbers is a load. We've stopped running Wimbush very much since he hurt his hand. I think thats why everyone puts his passing under a microscrope. But its a win. A 9th win. I'm still smiling.
November 19, 20177 yr 2 more games with Wimbush the way he is right now. Obviously he's talented. It's just going to take some off season work to really get it going. Everybody lauds his arm strength, but he definitely has some accuracy issues. I expect he'll be much better next year.
November 19, 20177 yr I still can't wrap my head around how they dominated TOP, maybe that's another reason it feels kind of underwhelming. Maybe Long should get some credit for making do with the time he had to call plays. It was just a weird feeling win to me.
November 19, 20177 yr Meh. Navy is over with a win and no major injuries. That's all this week was about. Next week is a huge test of Kelly's chops though. Another flat performance and big fingers will be pointed once again.
November 19, 20177 yr I’m glad I didn’t watch the game (was at an alumni thing with the wife showing support for her Cal Bears) I think I would have blown a gasket watching a Fullback convert a 3rd and forever on a running play

Ya, overall I don't think the D played well....Way too many times they should have gotten off the field and didn't. A lot of missed tackles. This Navy team is not very good. As for the offense, I believe they had 3 three and outs...Shouldn't have happened once. Navy's D is definitely not good...The fact that ND came out with 3 passes in a row was mind-boggling too..Seriously? Way to set the tone for the game.
November 19, 20177 yr Totally love seeing the Irish win 9 games already...definitely didn't expect it...BUT let's face it, ND has played 3 tough teams this year....georgia, usc, and miami....and is obviously 1-2 against them...For as long as BK has been here, I'd still hope for better!
November 19, 20177 yr I think the team reverted back to most of the Kelly era, a good but not great team. I'm tired of Kelly, but I suspect they'll bring him back unless they can both come to a satisfying divorce.

Talked about this last night...BK has gotten ND as far as he can take them...Painfully obvious....Bigger question...Has BK gotten ND to as far as ND can go nowadays???
