Posted November 15, 20177 yr I keep hearing that Long is young and will learn. He will get better, etc. My only response is why did Kelly not hire a proven OC from a power 5 school like he did with Elko? Seems like it might be a good idea when you are revamping your entire coaching staff to you know, save your job.
November 15, 20177 yr IMO Long is fine. He has done done great all season. Red zone offense is fantastic. Something BK has been notoriously awful at at ND. Wimbush couldn’t hit water from a boat during the Miami game. No OC would have fixed that. My concern is that Wimbush will perform just as awful vs. good competition. I think Long’s quandary is this: do I change the offense to focus on Wimbush strengths as a runner or keep the offense the same hoping his accuracy improves. My sense is that staff saw this all year and have tried to improve in game passing via high percentage throws to help his confidence and Rhythm. They probably didn’t expect him to be so bad in Miami game that he would need pulled after 4 drives.

Did anyone count how many of Winbush's passes were nice spirals vs. bad releases? Not sure why he seemed to throw so many passes that just looked ugly in the air.

I agree. Kinda see why bk was so upset when kizer left early. I do wonder if bw getting his nightmare game out of the way will calm him down? A lot of his throws are either high or long, that's what you do when you try to avoid INT's. Maybe now he'll settle in and make the throws and trust the players to run the routes and make the plays.
November 16, 20177 yr Long called multiple wide open TDs with great protection that wimsbush missed. Has happened all year. What plays is he supposed to call exactly?

November 16, 20177 yr Long called multiple wide open TDs with great protection that wimsbush missed. Has happened all year. What plays is he supposed to call exactly? Some plays were there, but IMO, it was not a well thought out game plan. Stretch runs to adams, pulling guards that left open gaps for speed to come through, too many pocket passes. Dex should have been the man in this game with more quick hitting jumbo packages. Mix in some mis-direction, get Wimbush moving around more...
November 16, 20177 yr Time to invest in a true QB’s coach? A coach can only do so much otherwise there would be no need to recruit 5 star quarterbacks. Golson and zaire both spent time with a personal qb coach. It didn't make them john elway.

I didn't count them but he threw his fair share of wounded ducks, as we used to call him. I don't fault Wimbush completely, he was clearly rattled.

They key here is running routes and making plays. There was some adlibbing going on by receivers and they missed several catchable balls.

November 16, 20177 yr Seemed fine for the first 9 games. Some people just like to complain, everyone wanted Kelly to bring in a fresh set of outside eyes to the offense and he did that, let's let the rest of the year play out

I agree, long has done a great job but at some point the QB has to complete passes and the WRs need to catch them.
November 16, 20177 yr Long called multiple wide open TDs with great protection that wimsbush missed. Has happened all year. What plays is he supposed to call exactly? Pretty much this... And Long is getting tired of all the drops also. On the pass Claypool dropped for a first down in the first quarter last week, the camera went to Long and you could see he was screaming "Catch the damn ball"
November 16, 20177 yr Did anyone count how many of Winbush's passes were nice spirals vs. bad releases? Not sure why he seemed to throw so many passes that just looked ugly in the air. It's possible that his hands were sweaty from the heat and humidity, which effected his grip.

November 16, 20177 yr I have no football coaching experience. I love watching games, but have never been involved in game-planning... taking the players you have and trying to formulate a plan to beat the defense you're about to go up against. It's obvious to me that many posters on DomerDomain know a lot more about X's and O's than I do. Are there any posters on DomerDomain who have actually held paid positions to coach an offense in either high school, junior college, or college? And that's a different question than asking if anyone has played offense in high school, junior college, or college. Clearly people who have played know more than I do, but coaching is different than playing. Anyone out there actually coached an offense?

November 16, 20177 yr Interesting stuff from Brian Driskell in the most recent BGI podcast: 1. Wimbush has poor mechanics 2. The poor mechanics are not Long or Rees's fault. 3. The poor mechanics are Mike Sanford's fault. He went on to explain that Sanford was basically a subpar QB coach. The drills they ran were silly and not game-applicable. Driskell said it looked like Sanford picked them up at some coaches' clinic and was running them without knowing the purpose for them. He said Rees is doing a good job, runs the right drills, and knows what he is talking about. However fundamentals are extremely difficult to correct during the year due to the necessity for game prep. During the offseason is when fundamentals can and should be honed.

I called my own plays for 3 games as a high school QB and created a National Championship winning flag football offense in college. But neither of those is probably applicable to your question.
