Posted November 6, 20177 yr Starting with Michigan St., Wimbush has put up the following QB ratings: Michigan St - 159.16 Miami - 149.42 USC - 135.16 NC State - 133.35 Wake Forest - 139.6 That would equate to a QB rating of 143.03 over those 5 games. Taking out FCS games, that would be about top 30 for this season among all QB's. Also of note, Lamar Jackson's passer rating this year? 143.82. Sam Darnold - 147.17. Jalen Hurts - 145. 78. So he is progressing extremely well. Add in a few drops here and there and things would look even better. ND is averaging 44.4 points in these games.

ND is averaging 44.4 points in these games. that 44.4 point average is the best way to put his legs in the equation. His QB rating is stabilizing but his overall impact makes him even more important as a playmaker. Its a like Letting Lebron be the point Gaurd too.
November 6, 20177 yr Author that 44.4 point average is the best way to put his legs in the equation. His QB rating is stabilizing but his overall impact makes him even more important as a playmaker. Its a like Letting Lebron be the point Gaurd too. Yep, he's gone from 16.3 carries the first 3 games to 10.4 the last 5.
November 6, 20177 yr Author Also of note, Wimbush had the second highest ESPN QBR this week at 94.6. That incorporates the running, but I'm going to have to look at the exact formula. EDIT: The formula basically takes every possible play for the QB, run/pass/penalty/sack and incorporates it into a formula based on estimated points added for each play. So a 10 yard run on 3rd and 12 isn't as good as a 10 yard run on 3rd and 8. Anyway, Wimbush is currently 7th in the nation for this season. I'll have to keep an eye on this one, I've never paid too much attention to it. Edited November 6, 20177 yr by corysold
November 6, 20177 yr Cory man...get out of my head. I was about to post something similar: the QB passing efficiency and QBRs of the QB's we've faced vs Miami's QB Passing Efficiency Rank (QBR) Jake Fromm 3rd (6th) Sam Darnold 28th (27th) Ryan Finley 40th (8th) John Wolford 9th (10th) Malik Rosier 36th (31st) ND has already faced 4 QB's just as good, if not better, than Rosier. Cory, what would you value more? Passing Efficiency Rating or overall QBR (that includes running)? For funsies...Brandon Wimbush (7th in Total QBR!)
November 6, 20177 yr Hard not to love this guy, sure he has flaws in the passing game, but he is an awesome runner and leader who plays with a ton of heart. He has a real chance to go down as one of the all-time great QB's in ND history.

Cory, what would you value more? Passing Efficiency Rating or overall QBR (that includes running)? For funsies...Brandon Wimbush (7th in Total QBR!) Like I said, I'm just now exploring QBR, but I like the fact it has the running involved. I'll have to look at how the expected points thing works, which seems to utilize the actual play vs just raw numbers. I suppose though it depends on the QB. I don't care what Sam Darnold does with his legs, as he is winning or losing with his arm. Guys like Khalil Tate, Lamar Jackson and Wimbush clearly would be better with QBR. But I also guess it determines what you are looking at. We already knew Wimbush could run. I want to see how he is improving as a passer, so I think QB rating is better than QBR since it isolates just passing and you don't have to look deeper into it and see how running inflated it. But neat to see that Lamar Jackson had a QBR of 72 his first year starting. Went to 84 last year and won the Heisman. Wimbush is at 79 so far this year, so if he can make that same jump...
November 6, 20177 yr He has improved a ton, you aren't seeing him miss those easy completions anymore. He is also completing way more down the field throws but has missed about 5 easy long tds with just a little too much power. I think we need to give Claypool and Stepherson for bringing a different dynamic to this offense. I really would like a rematch with Georgia as Wimbushes improvement along with these new weapons in the pass game. With those guys I don't expect Georgia would be able to contain Wimbush in the run game. Also his ability to protect the ball and throw the ball away is key in our success. His running and ball security has been vital to our success, he's a major reason we are #3. In terms of running qbs, after Lamar and Khalil he is the next best.
November 6, 20177 yr He is getting better, it was bound to happen with experience. That said, i trust the eyeballs over analytics.

November 6, 20177 yr Add in a few drops here and there and things would look even better. A few drops?! Our receivers give him very little help at all. TEs included.
November 6, 20177 yr I must admit Wolford impressed me greatly on Saturday. The Irish have faced a number of top end qb's this year and the defence played lights out. Hope this ride continues.
November 7, 20177 yr Coulda woulda shoulda, but i’d bet they’d be a lil more “decent-er” if the receivers caught some of them deep ppasses Edited November 7, 20177 yr by imroc

November 7, 20177 yr Wimbush is becoming a flat out beast! Go ahead try and keep him out of the end zone!! I wouldn't want anyone else taking our team into Miami!!! aloha

Kid is a red zone terror. Will be interesting to see how he plays @ Miami with the magnitude of the game. Think he's going to tear it up.
November 7, 20177 yr [ame] [/ame] I think this was a great soundbite from Kelly showing why Wimbush's decision-making (and pocket presence IMO) has improved dramatically since the start of the season "We've told him down there, look, if you're not sure, absolutely sure about the throw, take off...." This is a 180 from Kelly wanting his QB's to try and stay in the pocket and it showed in Wimbush's poor decision-making and terrible pocket presence early in the season I definitely think this new approach has helped Wimbush's comfort level and just play his game...which, ironically enough, actually has lead to him staying in the pocket longer
November 8, 20177 yr A few drops?! Our receivers give him very little help at all. TEs included. I could go on in a half page tirade ... but you were succinct and accurate as far as this past game goes. Gonna need to stretch the field on Saturday. Hope ... hope
November 8, 20177 yr He lacks touch and our wr's are below average. Agreed. Do you see his touch improving? I would say onthe short stuff yes. Kinda opposite from Kizer who had it on the deep stuff.
November 8, 20177 yr He lacks touch and our wr's are below average.A lot of those passes that lacked touch still hit our receivers in the hands. The touch will come. Receivers need to catch everything.
