Posted November 5, 20177 yr No two ways about it I just watched a very sloppy game by both offense and defense and we still beat them handily and the game was never really in doubt WF looked like the more physical team on both lines I remember saying in the first quarter that ND players looked out of it and kind of just going through the motions I say good...this team can now focus on miami
November 5, 20177 yr We hung 48 on them. Not a letdown on the offense. Defense decided to stay in the warm locker room at halftime though. They were MIA in the second half. Sad to see.
November 5, 20177 yr 2012 CFB title contenders needed to give Pitt a 2nd chance at a double OT field goal.... Im not let down at all...
November 5, 20177 yr Thought for sure Elko would be able to sero in on his old team he knew so well and shut them down. Really disappointed in the defense today.
November 5, 20177 yr Or to look at it from the other perspective, Wake might really know how to exploit any tendencies of Elko.
November 5, 20177 yr Thought for sure Elko would be able to sero in on his old team he knew so well and shut them down. Really disappointed in the defense today. This. I kept wanting to say that we needed Josh Adams, but this game was close because we softened up on D.
November 5, 20177 yr Author Sure the offense score 48, but from my vantage point, I saw an Oline that was struggling to keep them out of the backfield Don’t just look at the final score. It was sloppy all around
November 5, 20177 yr A letdown game to me is that we struggled to win and had a chance to lose it. At no point in this whole game did I even remotely feel this way. We dominated with over 700 yards and then played charming soft defense the second half. I almost feel like Elko allowed his d to let up for his old friend. Either that, or they just know him so well. But this was not a letdown game. That would had been BC a few years ago Or Pitt
November 5, 20177 yr Or to look at it from the other perspective, Wake might really know how to exploit any tendencies of Elko. This is exactly what I was thinking all game.
November 5, 20177 yr Author A letdown game is when you don’t play nearly to your ability Perhaps this team is at a point where their letdown game is still pretty good
November 5, 20177 yr It's a let down because we gave up over 20 points for the first time all year. It's a let down because our margin of victory was not 20 points or more for the first time this year. And yet, we beat them fairly easily as the game was never really in doubt. We did it without having to play our best running back after he was injured early. Indeed, we gained 720 yards, which is a Notre Dame record. A true let down is if we lose any of the remaining 3 games we have on our schedule.
November 5, 20177 yr I think what Franco is is saying that THISwas THE letdown game and yet weere still in control. If this is THE letdown game, great! So be it. It’s past. Let’s move on. I’m sure a lot of us had a gut feeling that this game was not going to be a cake walk & WF has proven itself a worthy competitor on more than one occasion
November 5, 20177 yr I have to wonder if the players weren't looking ahead to UM. Hopefully this is a slap back to reality and sharpens their focus.

Enormous game coming up next week.
November 5, 20177 yr The Team's mantra all season has been to dominate its opponent and to a lesser degree that was not accomplished today. However to suggest it was a sloppy, let down game IMHO is an exaggeration. We rolled 710 yards, with two deep drops on Claypool, would've been 6, and ESB, likely down at the one. Yoon was short on a FG...those 3 plays lead to scores, we are in 60's against a good Defense. Wimbush sat the entire 4th quarter. 5 carries for Adams. Both Love and Crawford dropped picks or in Crawford's case had it taken away. WF is expert at knowing Elko's tendencies and very smartly countered his plan in addition to being a better team than their record suggests. It was raining and freezing which effects footing/tackling and the one area I wasn't happy with. But....We remain a solid #3 in the CFP and with OSU and PSU both going down, OK at TCU next week, another challenger going away, Wisconsin looking awful again despite the score over IN, (and I'm a Badger for Chrissakes), we need to control our destiny and accept the fact sometimes the teams we play might be half way decent. If we win our final three games no worse than how the game was played yesterday, I'll be seeing some of you in the Rose Bowl come end of December. GO IRISH!

Good points, but....yoon DID miss, crawford & love DID drop, we DIDN’T score 60+ and it wasn’t raining most of the game, it was cold, but not freezing and the weather didn’t seem to have an effect on WF’s solid tackling, footing & most definitely not their receiving & throwing. We wonby 11 in a game that never really never got too far out of control. Dominating this team & breaking their will did not happem, thus it WAS a letdown. You can tell in the faces & demeanor of the players that they know they did not play up to their standard. But they won & it was decisive. As stated, if that’s THE letdown game, then this team is truly special. Miami got a little boost of confidence & seemingly proved they are competitors going into the playoff scenario. If the Fighting Irish can regroup & break the canes will this week, we sit solid in the 4 & prove to the nation that Mark Richt is a fine coach, but once again falls short of glory

Again, if you guys just look at yardage and call it a day, I don't know what else to do to show you. Look at the team's actual play throughout the game. Here's what I saw: - our OLine getting blown up at the point of attack numerous times - our WRs dropping actually well-thrown balls by Wimbush. You can't point to a few plays and say "well if we did this, then we would have blown them out more. We didn't make those plays, period. My point is, we would have, if the team was focused, which it was not yesterday - A defense that allowed multiple 3rd and long conversions ON A RUN PLAY - A defense that allowed 3 rushing TDs after only allowing one all year. - A defense that couldn't cover anyone: short, mid, or long Whether it was Clawson knowing Elko's tendencies and Woolford will probably be an NFL QB or whatever. It was pretty sloppy play. Even the players knew it I don't know why people are getting so bent out of shape over this post. I'm not calling this team bad at all. EVERY team has letdown games And point of fact, I'm HAPPY this was the letdown game, because we got it out of our system and the game was STILL in hand. Also, teams usually refocus and bounce back Edited November 5, 20177 yr by Franco
November 5, 20177 yr After two big games the past two weeks, and a huge one next week, this was a trap game. The game was decided when the 4th started. Survive and advance is what this weekend taught us
