I saw a tweet that Mustiher will return for his fifth year, which is not surprising.

Who else are good bets?

Ones I can think of that are eligible

Hayes

Bonner

Tranquil

Watkins

Bars

Weishar

I would think they will all be back, right?

Nelson would be the only one that is a 99.9% sure bet to go to the NFL.

I’m not sure what our scholarship numbers look like, but Weishar may not be back if we’re tight. We have the top 2 TEs in last years class sitting on the bench right now.

Bring them all back, more depth never hurts.

Hayes and Tranquill might be playing good enough to warrant some attention from the NFL. Not sure on Hayes but Drue seems like the type of guy who loves playing in college and wants to cherish it.

That's the problem when you have this much success, you have guys performing at a very high level. Unfortunately with the rookie contracts most guys want to get them done with asap. I'd keep my eye on those guys as possibilities to leave.

85 scholarships...

I think Tranquil has a home in the NFL. I think he leaves for sure.

See I disagree, I don't think he has a home, meaning a position, in the NFL. Too small to be a LB, too slow to be a safety. Maybe a career special team-er.

Maybe. I think a smart D Coor finds a spot for him though. He is fast and strong and has showed a great nose for the ball this year.

Not that it matters, but this thread inspired me to look at 2018 mock drafts and CBS has Mike McGlinchey going #1 overall.

Tranquill strikes me as the type of player who absolutely loves playing for ND. Could NFL money sway him? Sure. I don't know enough about his NFL prospects, but I would guess he's not much more than a late round pick or undrafted free agent right now. I would think he comes back as a two-time captain and one of the best leaders Brian Kelly has had at ND.

I hope you’re right as I love watching him play. He has really stepped up this year in a huge way.

Mustipher coming back would be huge, as would Bars, don't want a full rebuild on our great OL.

It will be tough replacing McGlinchey and Nelson - ND's rushing offense will surely take a hit, especially if Adams goes pro (which he should). But having both Mustipher and Bars come back for their 5th years would be huge, plus Kraemer and Hainsey are both pretty much returning starters. So the OL is really only adding 1 new starter - it will be interesting to see if Hainsey switches to LT, like Stanley and McGlinchey, or if he stays at RT.

LT - Eichenberg/Lugg

Mustipher said today he is coming back for sure.

I'm worried guys like Coney and Tillery might test the NFL out too.

I bet they ask for draft evaluations, but they will both be back. They are probably no better than mid-round draft choices right now. I'm not trying to knock them - those two have been a couple of our best defensive players, but I doubt after one good season they would turn pro. It's probably a Nyles Morgan situation from last year - ask for an evaluation and find out where your game needs improvement.

I would be very surprised to see Tillery turn pro no matter what the NFL evaluators say, he strikes me as a guy who is a lot more then just football, I base this on watching the ND Showtime series a few years ago. As for Coney, don't think he has proven himself enough yet, a strong senior year could really boost his stock.

I think everyone but Weisher will be asked back.

Other guys with 5th year options:

Canteen

Byrne

Mokwah

Newsome

Of these, only Newsome might come back, who else punts? Move to a walkon?

I thought I saw that they are 6 players over if all the 5th years come back. So if you take out these 4, you still need to find two more defections and that is just to be at 85 right now with no more recruits. Nelson likely leaves, so that is 5 gone. Adams could be 6.

But you still need to lose a few more players if you want to bring in more recruits. I'd guess we see a transfer or two.

I tend to agree with this but it also looks like they are going to end up with a big recruiting class. I have no idea how the numbers would work if all these guys came back

We got a punter last class
