Posted November 1, 20177 yr They've held every team to 20 points or less, only team in America who can say that. Who had that in the office pool after 8 games?
November 1, 20177 yr Impressive, give this man a raise! Not everyone is made out be a HC, most are just great coordinators. We can pay him more than any small school could either. We have got to be the most balanced team in the country, no wonder we win every game by 20+.
November 1, 20177 yr It is incredible what Elko has done. The dline, particularly, appears to be dramatically improved. Keep it up boys. Nice find Cory.
November 1, 20177 yr I was listening to Power Hour and they were talking about the possibility of Elko taking a head coaching job elsewhere. That's scary. We should pull out all the stops to keep him. I think he could even be the next head coach. We made the mistake of hiring Bob Davie and let our defensive coordinator go to resurrect the Wisconsin program. (Barry Alvarez)

Absolutely, the improvement on the defensive line is the key to this turnaround. ND lost two players to the NFL in Jarron Jones and Isaac Rochell, but they are so much better this season. Jerry Tillery is the prime example of how the changes on the coaching staff really improved this defense. HIs first two seasons, he was an inconsistent player who rarely made a big play. Now, he is arguably our best defensive lineman and is routinely making plays in the backfield. I also recall several times where he was running 20 yards downfield to make a tackle. Never would have seen that last year. I would say pretty much everyone along the defensive line has made a similar improvement: Bonner, Trumbetti, Okwara, Daelin and Jay Hayes...Even MTA and Hinish have contributed more as true freshman than I would have thought. Everyone (myself included) was bemoaning not having enough talent along the defensive line, but give credit to Mike Elko and Mike Elston (and Matt Balis) for developing these guys. Very impressed with what they've done. 19 sacks this season through 8 games. That says it all right there.
November 1, 20177 yr I guess that records gone. Thanks for the bad luck... JK people did that to my post about fumbling. awesome stat nice being the only one. Very hard to keep people under 21.nice post.

(Barry Alvarez) We also made the mistake of thinking BVG was a defensive genius with a small body of work. Remember that fist pumping on the sideline against Michigan? Im still waiting for some consistency beyond 1 season to draw a conclusion on anything regarding this program...

Im still waiting for some consistency beyond 1 season to draw a conclusion on anything regarding this program... Yeah but Elko has proven himself with 2 stars at Wake Forest and now we're seeing what he can do with 4 stars here. Keep in mind Prior to coming BVG had been fired from Georgia or Auburn I can't remember and then went on to coach the Jets linebackers when they were one of the worst teams in the league.

We pulled the same thing in 2012 (can’t count 3OT with Pitt) and everyone on this board calls it a fluke 5 years later — Understandably after our Alabama drubbing. I’ll wait to celebrate.

(Barry Alvarez) Bob Davie was our very successful and popular Defensive Coordinator before ND hired him to replace Lou Holtz as Head Coach, Like you are suggesting we do with Elko. Bob davie then flopped as a HC. Not saying that Elko won't be successful as a HC but.....
November 1, 20177 yr Author Gotta side with Echo a bit here. We pulled the same thing in 2012 (can’t count 3OT with Pitt) and everyone on this board calls it a fluke 5 years later — Understandably after our Alabama drubbing. I’ll wait to celebrate. True. This in no way indicates the future. But not even the most homeristic ND fan would have thought they'd have been the last team to give up 21 points this season. Sure, he might flop next year. But the fact he's had top 40 defenses at 3 different schools the last 6 years is a pretty good indicator it isn't a fluke. That said, I wouldn't make him the head coach in waiting right now. Not enough experience for that.
November 2, 20177 yr We also made the mistake of thinking BVG was a defensive genius with a small body of work. Remember that fist pumping on the sideline against Michigan? Im still waiting for some consistency beyond 1 season to draw a conclusion on anything regarding this program... The comparison of BVG and Elko is extremely lame. Elko inherited a dumpster fire of a defense and completely turned it around in one year. Not to mention he has proven himself year after year this decade wherever he has been. The system has been tested...it works.

Last time we got excited like this after a shutout of scUM, the dbag crashed the party hard I’ll let this ride out for a while

He, also, didn't have Manti Teo who many feel is the greatest lb in college football history. Diaco will be lucky to have a job soon as Nebraska is eager to clean house. The 2012 team had far more luck in their victories than this 2017 version. Many of the 2012 games could have gone either way (Purdue, Stanford, Pittsburgh.) They only beat BYU by 3 at home. The margin of victories by this year's squad and the lack of relevant 4th quarters more than speak for themselves.

Considering that outside the 3OT Pitt, the 2012 D gave up no more than 17 per game, its perfectly reasonable to compare the seasons. The three games you name were close because our offense sputtered. I am high on our D right now, but I’ll be interested in its longevity — as 2013 would forewarn.
November 2, 20177 yr Hold up! Wait a f—g minute! Hell no! Lol! Last time we got excited like this after a shutout of scUM, the dbag crashed the party hard I’ll let this ride out for a while Since some of you have short memories I’ll refresh your minds to show how stupid it is to compare BVG and Elko. By Nov 2 2014(BVG’s first year) ND had given up 43, 31, and 39 points in consecutive games. They finished by allowing 55, 43, 31, and 49 points in their final four games. Were people excited about BVG after Michigan the second game of the year? Yes. But please stop comparing what Elko has done to Brian Van Moron. He is easily the worst assistant in Kelly’s time here.
November 2, 20177 yr I am impressed with the defense, And Elko has done an amazing job, but I think Balis deserves a ton of credit also. This team is finally where they need to be in strength and conditioning and I think we see that translated to them being one of the most physical teams on the field.

But, the thread also evolved about coaching also, and I feel all ND fans would prefer this staff over the 2012 d staff. There's also not a truly dominant player like 2012. Either way, we should all be thrilled with this defense, which I feel we are.
