Just as title says how many years do you think we can keep him before he gets a head job? I think the possibility of 1 and done is growing each week. Hopefully one of our greener defensive coaches(Lyght) picks up on his scheme and we can keep rolling with it.

I feel with his success next year if he keeps this up he gone for sure.

It is really important to keep him. Coach in waiting and sprinkle cash liberally.

yupp..gonna have to give him Kirby Smart money

2 more years. I dont see him leaving just yet for a Miami of Ohio job. And BK’s other assistants were much more qualified than Elko with his time at ND. I think the big programs will say show me another year there and then we’ll talk.

I've been worried about this since the SC game. I agree with coltssb though, there probably needs to be another year or possibly two to really start worrying about him leaving. He did have a good year at WF last year though which people may appreciate. Wasn't there someone telling opposing teams what the defense was gonna do the next week and they still played great? I may be completely wrong about that though.

Elston may be the bigger concern of being recruited away from ND right now as compared to Elko.

Here's hoping he takes the Kirby Smart route. Show enough and stay long enough to be able to get a top 10 type job.

Look at the guys like Martin and Diaco who left for lower level jobs. The didn't succeed and probably won't get hired as a HC anything soon.

At least if you don't succeed at a big school, you are making $3,000,000/year while you are doing it.

This was also a concern people expressed with BVG to a lesser degree. Lets all pump the brakes a bit, I'm sure the bigger programs will be waiting to see if this is an improvement extending beyond 1 year.

I say we keep Elko for the 2018 and 2019 season and then he leaves for a big job at like a middle class ACC program.

Not everyone wants to be a HC, he may be perfectly satisfied with having the chance to coach elite athletes as opposed to the 2 star players he would be pulling in at a mid-major as a HC.

The job I worry about with regard to Elko is Tennessee. Clawson, Wake Forest's head coach, is a former Tenn offensive coordinator. If they strike out on Gruden (MNF), Chip Kelly (UCLA), Scott Frost (Nebraska) and Dan Mullen (Florida), which I think is likely, I'm concerned they could look at Clawson. If they do, not only do I worry about Clawson trying to poach Elko back, I also worry about Wake possibly offering him the head coaching job.

Who knows how long Kelly will stay. Could definitely see Elko as his replacement in a few years if Kelly moves on. Also, same goes for Chip Long. He will be a hot commodity soon as well.

If Elko does move on, I wonder if Kelly attempts to promote Lea as the DC or if he will follow Elko and be his DC.

There it is. Year 1 after the Michigan stomping we were worried about the 'stache jumping ship.

Also worried that the ship would sink when Diaco left (Which it sorta did) but there are many good DCs out there.

Wasn't he making around 1.2/year?

Whatever it was, we need to pay him as much as he'd make being the HC at Buffalo or Toledo, so he hangs on like Kirby and waits for a power 5 job or maybe even a big name job. That will make our vacancy even more attractive for the next hot shot coordinator. Come here, make 7 digits and put out a potent group and get your own power 5 team to run some day.

Just my glass half full thinking

If we're really thinking glass half full, why not hope for him to be Bud Foster, Venables, Tom Bradley, or the like, who all remained coordinators for a looong time. Like stated before, do we even know if he's expressed HC interest?

Good God guys, pump the brakes. It's only been 1/2 a season. And remember, our S&C Coach has a lot to do with it as well. Let's see how he does the rest of the year and next.

This is true. However, Elko was one of two guys in NCAA who had a top 40 defense the last 5 seasons before this one. This will be 6 in a row. It isn't a one year fluke.

As was pointed out, BVG had been fired multiple times and there were people on here who didn't think he should have been hired to be begin with, as his scheme was too complicated and wouldn't work in college. I think it was Irish33 if I remember the name right.

Because I firmly believe that ND is a program that should never go after hot commodity coordinators as the job requires leadership skills unknown to being a very talented offensive or defensive coordinator.

Still half full..

Could not agree more with you. Elko’s system is proven. He literally turned this defense completely around with his system.

Give the guy whatever he wants pay-wise and promise him the eventual keys to the program if he wants. Unlike some have mentioned there are not a ton of GREAT defensive coordinators out there. It is much easier to find an OC than an ELITE DC.

Show enough and stay long enough to be able to bet a top 10 type job? Correct. And that job is replacing Kelly when he leaves or retires.
