Gold Stars:

Coaching staff. They called a great game tonight. The team was well prepared for SC. There was really only two series I was unhappy about on offense, the first possession and the one before we recovered the fumbled punt. I love getting Stepherson on those jet sweeps. Defensively Elko called a great game too. RJIII was bottled up all night, and Darnold felt pressure a lot. This D is hungry and plays fundamentally better than about any ND defense in a long time(with exception to '12).

Wimbush looked great out there. His passing may still be off at times, but he made some very throwable balls that were dropped by the receivers. His running skills were awesome. Very Tony Rice-esque performance. He even trucked a couple defenders on some of those runs.

Josh Adams what can you say. He having one he'll of a year and the week off did him and others a lot of good. His jump cuts were beautiful tonight. There is no way the CFB world can keep ignoring him, he deserves to be mentioned in the Heisman race hands down.

The OL, could they have played a better game? I think that may have been their best game under BK and Harry. They beat the **** out of SC all night long. It was so bad Bars got flagged for ineligible receiver because he put his defender so far down field. Pancakes everywhere. The right side of the line is really coming into their own too as the season progresses. The holes were so big my slow fat *** could have made gains.

Defense was awesome. The entire unit was flying around to the ball. I think about everyone had a good play or two out their it seemed. We set the tone early and often out there. It seemed the SC ball carriers would go down early rather than fight for more yards a number of times because the fellas were laying the lumber. Coney was a madman out their tonight, what a night for this kid. He made a number of those punishing tackles and fired up his teammates. Like many I was extremely disappointed by Tillery coming into this season, he didn't seem to care or whatever. He has been awesome this year so far, looks so in shape and plays like a new man IMO.

Balis. He whipped this team into shape and they bought what he was selling too. Undoubtedly he and his programs have been instrumental to our success.

Chilled Kelly. Don't know what it is, burdened less with calling the game, drugs, or whatever. This chill Kelly is much better. Save the raging Irishman for post game like MSU post game locker room celebration.

Frown faces:

Not much to complain about. Wimbush and the receivers need to keep working to improve. There were some passes that were there that didn't get caught.

Not 50 pointing SC lol!

Don't make me come revive this thread a week from now and add USC hang over because of bad game with State!!

I think they saw my war post and decided to napalm them.

I'd say the offensive playcalling was the best I've seen. Really loved the way they opened things up with all the jet sweeps. I think those jet sweeps plus Wimbush showing some ability to hit receivers down field really opened up our running game

I was a little frustrated when they started to get cute trying to throw the ball inside the redzone. But it was immediately rectified by running it down their throats the next play and scoring. Need to go back to watch the game again (which I 100% will) but I think we were perfect in the redzone again (honestly don't remember)

only frownie, and yes, I understand they are on our schedule...and yes, the poodle is no longer there which then would have required it, but I kind of wish we didn't call off the dogs...and at least broke 50 on them last night...would have been sweet. We could have easily broke 60 if we wanted too..it was that easy, and we totally overwhelmed them.

Just wondering, are we THAT good, or how did $C beat stanford? Or is stanford that bad?

I want to crush them and wipe that smirk off their idiot coach....

Tired & defeated players tend to get sloppy & irritated. This often results in vengeful acts that can inflict injury. 50 pts is nice, but not at the cost of injury

Love all the gold stars but just wanna say what a job Balis has done. I went to the USC board and they all commented how small and weak they looked compared to us. That reminded me of how we looked vs Ohio State in 2015.

Balis deserves a lifetime contract, the talent was here but now it's developing.

Kudos to skelly on making changes around him but he seems different too.

They called off the dogs big time 3 years ago so no, I don't feel we needed to go for the jugular anymore than we did. That game was game coincidentally or not was the exact same score line and they could have hit 70. It was that bad.

There is no need to go around being petty. What goes around comes around and if a 35 point ads whooping is not enough for you then you may never be happy. It was the perfect storm.

Big gold star for Coney and Tranquil. One play that really stuck out to me was the Opening Kick Off in the 2nd Half where Coney body slammed the SC Returner. That's the kind of physical play we haven't seen out of ND in a while.

Thanks for posting it. I won't be around on a regular basis for a while so i hope some of you guys keep it going.

Agree with all the gold stars above. Do you guys give Watkins a free pass? I still think he gets exposed way too often. He had some excellent plays yesterday, but also got caught with his pants down several times — a couple of which led directly to SC’s 14 points.

The one element of our offense that i haven't seen mentioned is Stepherson.

I can't help but wonder what the outcome of the Georgia would have been had he been able/allowed to play.

I mentioned it ever so briefly under coaches I think. Yes he is a difference maker and an added weapon to the offense on the jet sweeps, and now gives defenses a speedy downfield threat to have to account for in the passing game. When he is in the game teams need to watch for him. This is entirely new film on him/us too, so teams will have to game plan that much more for us making it more difficult to defend us.

The huuuge cushion the SC receivers were getting was driving me bonkers...

THIS^^^^

Yes yes yes! But I think that is a part of that "bend don't break" defense we're playing. Don't let the big play happen and keep everything in front of you. Let them get down to the red zone and tighten up. Let them have the 3's.

This is probably looking WAYYY to far ahead but this defense works on every team BUT Alabama. We all saw what happened in 2012 with the bend but don't break defense against a team that does everything well

edit: Forgot to add something...the 3rd down play-calling was the best I've seen in Kelly's tenure. In the second quarter when Watkins just intercepted Darnold's pass, that 3rd down conversion on an out to Smythe kept the drive going and allowed us to really put the game out of reach

Sort of. That was also a "don't tackle and hope you don't break" defense.

Only minor frownie face is more of a reminder that ND has to hit those big play opportunities when they matter in close games.

We all saw the couple deep shots that were overthrown and then the other one that was a drop by Claypool.

BUT, on the first drive of the game, we had a perfect screen pass set up and the RB dropped the ball. He would have ran for 30-50 yards at least, IMO.

In the end it didn't matter this game but sometimes those types of plays are huge. And on that drive even if we didn't score we could have flipped the field.

GO IRISH!

To me, that guy is worth his weight in gold. Of course we didn't know till we knew, but from what I was reading and seeing leading up to the season, strength & conditioning-wise, there was this sly attitude coming from the players, as inf to indicate, "wait till you see how different we look."

The second half kick off summed it up pretty well. Coney was nearly at a stop, exploded into the ball carrier and just planted him.

-Gold Stars-

the OL deserves the worlds biggest gold star, they played fantastic.

josh adams gets another gold star.

I thought tony jones played his best game of the season against usc.

Brandon wimbushes legs get a big gold star.

the defense gets a gold star. the DL played very well, jay hays is having a heck of a year.

-Frownies-

Brandon wimbush passing. he just missed on about 3 down the field passes that would have been huge.

calling a flee-flicker when up 49-14 in the fourth was an odd call.

and to be picky, going 3 and out on the first series.

Really? I thought it was awesome hahah
