Posted October 8, 20177 yr Big second half of our '17 schedule. I can see us going 1-5 with a win over Wake and losses to Navy, SC, NCSU, Stanford and the U. Thoughts?
October 8, 20177 yr Is this a joke? Yeah it's possible but with Elko we will never lose to Navy and should hang 50 on them. NC State and Wake we beat on talent alone, and while USC has more talent they are extremely banged up so therefore we have an advantage as well as in coaching. Miami and Stanford on the road will be tougher but we match up very well with both teams. I see 9 as the floor and will be surprised if we don't win 10.

I with ya, I think 3-3 would be about the worst with of course 6-0 being the best. I got criticized on the chat for suggesting 3-3 with Book, but vertually every week is a quality opponent

I got criticized on the chat for suggesting 3-3 with Book, but vertually every week is a quality opponent Well they would think I'm a lunatic for suggesting we can run the table with Book. We are built on defense and a strong running game just like Bama, they've won with qbs worse than Book. Book wasn't too bad and it was his first start, this team is about more than just Wimbush even though he brings a ton with his running.

I just don't like what the first half did too our playcalling offensively. Lot more passes, penalties, and just a less relaxed looking group. I hope Wimbush gets healthy because his calm demeanor means more than just rushing yards.
October 8, 20177 yr I can't see ND losing to Navy this year. Too much run game for them to handle. ND could lose to any of the other 5 teams. Will they? Probably at least 1 or 2 of them. Maybe 3. Who knows, could be 4. But advanced metrics have ND a top 10 team and better than pretty much everyone left on the schedule, as good as they all are. I'd be shocked at a 1-5 finish that doesn't involve a few major injuries.

October 9, 20177 yr Big second half of our '17 schedule. I can see us going 1-5 with a win over Wake and losses to Navy, SC, NCSU, Stanford and the U. Thoughts? I suppose anything is possible, but is this your prediction.. You used the word "can", so what is your point? I can see us going 6-0 also..
October 9, 20177 yr We are playing very solid football we are a TOP 10 rushing team we have a Top 10 rusher our defense is very improved----gets turnovers--holds down big plays---shows lots of depth--gets decent QB pressure Wimbush and the offense are very strong in the red zone Wimbush can be a playmaker OLINE has been good Kicking game has been solid OTHER then a somewhat less then stellar passing attack team seems very solid--- Only team to squeeze buy us is #4 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Its RIDICULOUS too be projecting 1-5 like this was preseason and negative speculation worried about another 5 win season made any sense... We should expect 4-2 given the teams we play--- 5-1 would be TERRIFIC 3-3 should be disappointing after the strong start 6-0 is without doubt very unlikely ---nonetheless that gets us into the playoffs because the teams we will play are doing so well.. aloha
October 9, 20177 yr Author I suppose anything is possible, but is this your prediction.. You used the word "can", so what is your point? I can see us going 6-0 also.. My intent was to start a discussion about where all of you think we will be with our 2nd half slate coming up. I think we lose 4 of our remaining games, but I hope I'm wrong. We are .440 or something like that in the Kelly era against ranked teams and 5 remaining teams are all ranked. I know we don't go by the numbers and actually line up to play the game. If I look at both the U and NCSU, I see athletic defenses that we will struggle with and one of those is on the road in a hostile environment. NCSU actually has a dynamic QB and several playmakers on offense, so they will pose a challenge for our D. I thought UNC could have put up a few more scores on us if they didn't implode, and USC has better athletes and a potential top 10 pick at QB. I dont believe they self-implode like NC did. Wake we win, and between Stanford and Navy I think we win one of those 2. Thinking of our size and commitment to run the ball, I can see us simply overpowering them. But Stanford will be another tough test on the road. I do like the improvement on D with Elko, and like many wish he joined us 2 years ago. I was hoping to get a temperature check this year because we have a few key gaps to address: Wimbush's consistency throwing the ball, our WR play needs to improve as does our CB play. We still have a few special teams mistakes that we can overcome against UNC but they will sting us against almost all of the teams on our 2nd half slate except maybe Wake.

October 10, 20177 yr Author I see you as the butthurt guy in the blue jersey. I'm not butthurt. I hope we go 6-0 and I'm happy we're 5-1 at this point. But if you have something meaningful to contribute to this thread, I promise you I'll read or watch it.

Obviously there is a lot to improve on and ND could lose just about any game left on the schedule. However, I don't see Wake Forest being ranked anytime soon and Navy is Navy, who ND should be able to dominate physically. That leaves you 4 truly ranked teams, and if ND is around .500 under Kelly vs. ranked teams, which they are, that would be about 2-2. So I'd expect 3-3 worst case, 4-2 most likely and 5-1/6-0 if every thing lines up. Really, if Wimbush can come out of the bye week 25% better in the pass game, ND is going to be really hard to beat by anyone left on the schedule.

If Wimbush comes out improved for passing it also has to be coaching. VCDomer and I have been going off every game this season for more TE involvement. One of a struggling QBs best frjends can be the TE seam down the middle, and its really great for D selling out for the run. We have gone away from this route since Eifert left and it's become an afterthought in this offense. It used to be a bread and butter play for us. We've been seeing wide open TE many times now, but we aren't hitting it. That long bomb to Finke on the sidelines when we were backed up to the EZ, sure enough TE was open. That needs to change with the coaches and QB, because Smythe especially has been pretty consistent.
October 10, 20177 yr Are you the kind of person who pulls over to watch a car fire? Haha. But he is a dumpster fire with that post
October 10, 20177 yr Author Haha. But he is a dumpster fire with that post So what is your prediction for the 2nd half?
October 10, 20177 yr So what is your prediction for the 2nd half? NC State, USC, and stanford being 1 possession games (either way) with Navy Wake and Miami being convincing wins. 3-3 worst 6-0 best. Probably 4-2 or 5-1 You are bordering troll territory with your OP
October 10, 20177 yr So what is your prediction for the 2nd half? Beat nc state wake navy and Miami, lose to usc and Stanford finish 9-3 And a higher level but not quite new years 6 bowl invite, maybe the citrus bowl against an sec team like auburn.
October 10, 20177 yr Author This may have been discussed elsewhere, but I wonder how much of an x-factor a guy like Stepherson can be to help our passing game out. He has good speed and hands if he gets more reps, and could open more up for ESB, Smythe, etc. Looks like a few of the younger WRs (Claypool, Boykin) are getting more consistent reps and they are improving.
October 11, 20177 yr Anything other than 10-2 or 9-3 at this point would be a letdown, especially considering they way they're playing right now.
Big second half of our '17 schedule. I can see us going 1-5 with a win over Wake and losses to Navy, SC, NCSU, Stanford and the U. Thoughts?
