Figured I had some time to really look at USC. Haven't yet, but, I located a condensed video of their loss, then some stats

There the center makes a great block on the middle line backer and the Guard traps his guy in the A gap for the B gap to be wide open. He runs into the secondary little inside draw type run.

To me, what makes Donald so talented is how quick he can release the ball. Quick releases put blitzing teams in problems. I'd Rush 3, Spy 1, and Drop 7 for most of the game I think.

I know we'll give up lots of completions, but I'd be hoping it would produce 1-2 interceptions.

He hurts you both ways because rushing only 3 gives him more time to extend the play. But I think his arm will hurt you more than his legs

We know how talented this guy is at RB. Our staff was in the final 2 for his recruitment.

Very quick and explosive, not a guy "where stacking the box" helps much because he can cut right around it. Just gotta fil gaps and have help when he cuts back because he will

Washington state got a Deep post route on their 3rd corner, thats something ND has in the playbook too.

Like that QB Lewerke ND played at Michigan State, Darnold can throw some picks too.

This is very similar to the Love Pick 6 vs MSU. Its probably either off quarters or off man and the Corner reads the hook and jumps it.

This is just a zone running play to the boundary, Jones III shows high 4.3 to low 4.4 speed and goes 86 yards untouched.

Another reason why I would not stack the box against him, I'd rather give up 20 yards and have a safety slow him down than 86 and see him go untouched.

Click to see the run. Thanks for putting up with me guys. I love too get in the videos.

#42 LB Uchenna Nwosu gets a pick much like #42 Julian Okwara did in the UNC game.

Key here is that WASU holds them to a FG in the redzone

17-10 VS 21-10 WITH momentum

I'm a bit worried about our DBs covering their WR. How do you think the USC WR corps has looked this year? ND has struggled with tall, physical WR all year long. None of their guys appear to be in that mold, do you think that our DB's can handle them?

Let me approach this two ways.

I promise I will look for film too.

I cheat a bit and ESPN's long pass reception stat to answer.

Jones III has both their long pass TD(56) and their long Rush(86)

So 56 means to me that their not getting behind many people. The fact that their RB has it means he's a match-up issue, like Reggie Bush was.

Burnett has 41 catches and a 12.9 average

Next Mitchell has 18 with a 14.9 average

I'm going to review the film but I don't see a true burner having a huge part.

except of Course Jones who worries me matched with Tranquill, I'd like more Crawford at rover.

We will give up receptions but I think the game will be decided in the redzone

short passes, RPO, slants. WASU sustained a very good drive there, pass interference too. All I know is if USC plays alot of man to man and Wimbush is healthy he will run for over 100 yards, as they turn their backs.

I can't shake the feeling that the middle of their defense, behind the linebackers and before the safeties is a place ND can make yardage, now we'd probably to it with the run game instead of the pass, but they have their linebackers near the line of scrimmage so much that if Mustipher can get to the mike big holes might present.

I don't know there depth chart starters etc... but that is a lot of guys on the injury report. And they play Utah before us. They may be even more beat us in two weeks when they play ND. Funny a new coach and strength and conditioning program and our guys seem to be getting stronger and less injury prone than years past. I just think about all the what ifs.

True. The QB has also come out as saying the staff should change some of the calls because they are stale.

Like I thought a good young group but lacks a little of the "wow" factor USC is used to without Juju Smith and Adoree Jackson. So we might catch a bit of a break there. Pardon the pun.

Again you can run on this team a bit behind the Guard. Utah had chances to score more points in the first half that bit them in the second half.

Darnold had a rough start and a clutch finish. His game reminds me a bit of A Johnny Manziel, somewhat taller, more of a thrower than a runner but can extend plays and make you pay if you ignore their feet.

We need to access the area behind the linebackers and before the safeties with either our runs or passes.

We also need to challenge the 3rd corner in the seam vertically.

Would you say we need to let Darnold run and play more zone, Faith? Is that what you were saying? Darnold can extend plays but he's not a threat like Wimbush. I say use the Diaco approach this game. Three-four man rushes with the occasional blitz. They'll get yards but let's make them earn eighty yard tds.

Yeah thats the approach. I'd prefer Rush 3 Spy 1 Drop 7.

I think a spy would keep him from just running and might act as a "robber" and get a pick.

That is similar what Arizona State did to Washington and they have been much more of a blitzing team in the past. Personally I agree with this but I think we should take some shots at Darnold. I really like how Shaun Crawford can sneak in there on a corner blitz.. Boy this is going to be a big game and we can certainly win it.

agreed he will take his shots but I like about Elko is he does it where you don't expect it, off a short corner(so smart because Crawfords fast and agile so he can get in there in 2 or 3 seconds.

Blitzes that take 5 or 6 seconds just will not work with a quick release like Darnold's, but like you said if you send it off the short side and it lands quick those are the ones that work for ND.
