We did a lot of four man preasure last night and did a decent job. We don't have a monster edge pass rusher, but Daelen Hayes has a lot of potential. The best surprise is when we do blitz it always seems to catch the QB off guard and make him hurry his throws. Elko has done a magnificent job so far.

8 sacks in four games, and most teams have been doing quick hitters against for large portions of the game.

With Hayes and Okwara we have to guys on the edge who could be really good. Agree, we didn't blitz a lot last night. We let their Qb make mistakes, seemed to work.

Right now the most discouraging aspect of our team is punt returns. We are not blocking other team's gunners. As soon as we catch the ball we get pummeled. We could have Deion Sanders back there and it wouldn't make a difference. The second thing is pass blocking on obvious passing downs. Opponents are going through and around our line like varsity playing the freshman team. 75% our passes were quick throws to WRs.

Our pass rush seems to be doing fine, far from great and still work in progress but clearly trending up

Uhm, you're bitching about our defense after a total domination on the defensive side of the ball?

You'd rather risk gap integrity so we could sack a terrible QB that would eventually make his own mistakes?

Did you ever think that wasn't part of Elko's game plan? MSU was turnover prone against weaker opponents..

Enjoy the win. We beat a power 5 team and made them look like a MAC team.

Learn coverage's and how it relates to pass rush before a post like this. When we blitzed or brought an extra rusher, we got into the backfield. Second, with a mobile QB and our preventing their WR's from getting behind coverage, we played soft zones and man mixed in. We rushed four or five as a base against a five or six man front. Do the math. Our D played to the game plan which was one of the finest overall efforts I've seen during Kelly's tenure. We rotated a ton and no penalties for 12 men, offsides etc.

I've tended to ignore your posts but this is so stupid it warranted a reply. As for Defense, how did your Buckeyes allow 21 points to an overmatched UNLV team? Worry more about them than ND. GO IRISH!

It did work and as I said, I love the defense overall. Maybe I'm just used to watching SEC defensive lines getting pressure up the middle as well as the edges with just a 4 or 5 man rush.

Our sacks tend to be coverage sacks.

It's not srupid. Teams get pressure on 4 or 5 man rushes all the time. Our sacks are coverage sacks as we don't have any difference makers on the line.

You don't have to insult people if you disagree with them. I understand the game. Getting pressure without blitzing is a huge benefit for your defense. I watch SEC teams down here and they do it all the time. USC will eat us alive with that kind of time to throw.

I did like the rotation to keep them fresh, however.

defense sent few blitzes last night--coverage was the strategy in this game--it a was a pretty effective approach.....

lack of pressure clearly was a tactic last night

defense showing interesting flexibility

no complaints here

aloha

Ease up...

Always room for improvement...

The QB for USC doesn't have the mobility of the MSU QB and the scheme employed by Elko and staff last night was designed for that. I'm sure by the time we play SC, with much more on film by then, we will have a scheme in place to account for his skill set. Considering they have excellent RB's but not the traditional quality at WR, we will most likely play the run and make him throw to beat us. We will see.

Wrong. Darnold is very mobile (probably a better athlete than MSU's guy) and is at his best when freelancing it.

Sam darnold has 15 attempts for 0 yards on the year, lewerke has 206 yards. I know that doesn't tell the whole story because there are so many factors to that but darnold doesn't have the mobility and isn't the run threat that lewerke is in my opinion. We can agree to disagree

Can Darnold QB sneak?

He's got great pocket presence. I saw a Texas team that would had sacked 90 percent of college qb's but Darnold was jump passing and side-stepping everything they were throwing at him. He will be tough to rattle.

I can ..do ..and always harp on the lack of a consistent pass rush. That being said, I think the game plan was right against Lewerke. Inexperienced. Make him beat you. We still had lapses in the back end with corners not getting their heads around. Love should have defended that lob td better... and another one if I recall. I hope that Lyght is seeing what we see. Overall, they gashed us for some plays up the middle, Lewerke will be good for them and we do need more up front.
