At first glance, it didn't look like there were a ton of games that would be that interesting, but I think there are some potentially good matchups before the Notre Dame game.

NC State at #12 Florida State (11:00 on ABC/ESPN)

#1 Alabama at Vanderbilt (2:30 on CBS)

#5 USC at Cal (2:30 on ABC)

#16 TCU at #6 OK State (2:30 on ESPN)

#8 Michigan at Purdue (3:00 on Fox)

#17 Mississippi State at #11 Georgia (6:00 on ESPN)

#4 Penn State at Iowa (6:00 on ABC)

Obviously, interested to see how NC State and USC play this week. USC looked beatable last week against Texas. I still have no idea how good NC State is after losing in week 1. I don't really buy the hype for the Bama/Vandy game - I think Alabama wins by 20+ points. TCU/OK St and MS St/UGA are the two best games of the week. Doubt it will matter, but it would be nice to see UGA win. I think Michigan and Penn State will both win, but those two games aren't cakewalks either.

Agree on your take on all these games.

It has been hard being an ND fan over the last decade, with my office so close to TCU. TCU has had a much better overall run over the last 10-15 years than ND. While ND played in a championship game and TCU hasn't during that time frame, TCU does have a #2 final AP poll ranking (2010) while ND doesn't (finished #4 when they got smoked by 'Bama in that game).

TCU has a coach that knows how to win and how to step on a vanquished opponent's throat late in the game. TCU doesn't get nearly the types of recruits ND gets. I don't think Patterson would be a fit at ND, but I sure like how he gets everything possible from his players.

TCU-Oklahoma State should be a fun game to watch. The OK State QB looks pretty strong.

Patterson seemed like a hot commodity who didn't jump at the right time to a big program when he had the chance. I see him as a little stale now.

Maybe stale. But if he beats the number 6 team in the country tomorrow, it should make some of ND fan-dom's blod boil a bit. Not doing any fact checking, I'd bet quite a bit that TCU has beaten a top 10 program more recently than ND.

Patterson makes I think 4.5 million a year and will be enshrined in Fort Worth when he retires. That wouldn't happen for him at many bigger programs. He has a pretty sweet gig and I can easily why he didn't leave when other programs came calling.

Patterson had a good 5 year or so run but they have fallen off as of late. Not too sure the last time they went to a BCS bowl or were in the top 10 even.

I'll give him credit for doing less with more and he was won big games as well as a BCS bowl game I believe.

I was a fan but he has lost his lust recently and I don't think he is much of a step up from Kelly.

Nvm I did a little search and I just had memories of them winning 4 and 6 games recently but that is sandwiched by numerous double digit win seasons and big time bowl wins. So more like a fairly big step up from tomato face but he'll never leave TCU, he is a legend there.

I always wondered about coaches that can recruit transfers and juncos coming to ND. At ND, you miss out on a recruiting class, you can make up ground by getting the best juco at that position. You have to make due. So guys like Patterson and Snyder are great, but I hold off on giving them too much credit.

Patterson's a pretty good coach. I think he has been aided by being in the Big12 at a time when the University of Texas has been way down and Oklahoma has been good and decent but often not a powerhouse. I thought that about Briles record at Baylor as well. Still, working near the heart of the Frog, it has just killed me to watch TCU of all schools do better than ND cumulatively over the last 10-15 years.

For perspective, here are how they compare in the final AP poll of each season:

2008: TCU 7, ND nr; 2009: TCU 6, ND nr; 2010: TCU 2, ND nr; 2011: TCU 14, ND nr; 2012: TCU nr, ND 4; 2013: TCU nr, ND 20; 2014: TCU 3, ND nr; 2015: TCU 7, ND 11. And then there was last year, a bad year for both schools.

And, while I agree in principle about jucos, TCU still graduates their football players at a rate comparable to ND's.

10 minutes into the first quarter, NC State is up 10-0 over FSU. The new QB for FSU looks horrible - two possessions and they only have 1 yard of total offense (4 passing, -3 rushing). NC State looks very good so far.

Halftime scores:

NC State 17 - FSU 10 (Bradley Chubb looks really really really good at DE)

Texas Tech 13 - Houston 10

Arkansas 21 - Texas A&M 17

Miss St. at GA is the one I'm interested in.

NC State wins. Wow.

NC State did everything they could to blow it at the end, but huge win for them. Their defensive front seven is legit. Bradley Chubb will be a nightmare for ND.

Texas A&M beat Arkansas in OT 50-43. Don't think Bret Bielema will survive this season - he is now 26-28 at Arkansas and I doubt they do better than 6-6/7-5 this year. That's a tough place to win. He was 68-24 in 7 seasons at Wisconsin, with 3 Rose Bowl appearances (although the Badgers lost all 3 times).

Texas Tech is going to beat Houston, 27-24. Thought it would be more like 57-54. Houston turned it over 5 times.

...and the Alabama gave is over. Up 14-0 in the first quarter and they just recovered a fumble in Vanderbilt territory.

21-0, that's about what I expected.

USC looks very beatable...

I really like this Cal team. Very well coached and taking it to USC.

Interesting halftime scores from ND opponents:

USC 13 - Cal 13

Clemson 7 - BC 0

Toledo 16 - Miami 10

Appalachian State 9 - Wake Forest 3

Duke 10 - UNC 10

Miami (OH) 28 - Central Michigan 14

Navy 28 - Cincinnati 17

Other interesting scores:

UCF 21 - Maryland 3

Alabama 31 - Vandy 0

TCU 20 - OK State 10

Rutgers 16 - Nebraska 14 (yikes)

Purdue 10 - Michigan 7

What in the heck did Miami do to get ranked 14th? lol preseason rankings at it's finest.

Many surprising scores right now, TCU looks very impressive.

Cal giving usc a game right now, Purdue giving bitchigan a game. Let's see how this plays out
