Can I get some of your assessments on these guys.

I admit seeing the two of them topping the depth chart caught me by surprise.

Can I get a brief history on these guys---and any other info or opinions that some of you who know more then I do could offer. I hate going into the season

with such a big blind spot for me on the starting wideouts.

thanks aloha

The only thing I have gathered is both are experience and one comes from under Chip Long so he knows the offense. One can only imagine this is a comfort level game 1 but no clue. I hope/assume Claypool will get solid time and step up to only start against Georgia.

Then again if these 2 show out and Claypool also comes up big, can't be too upset there.

According to this "Canteen kept bouncing between WR and corner throughout his career, never getting established at either spot." He had shoulder surgery around March of 2016 and sat out the entire 2016 season before transferring to ND.

As an asu alum and fan, I've seen a lot of cam smith and have been a big fan of cam. I always thought he was a quiet guy, but seemed very cerebral. Very smart for a football player. Suffered through injuries at ASU, but had some success. Got to see his speed in action in person against some good PAC12 teams.

What I've thought would happen and what I've picked up on during fall camp is that cam is a leader. He's more vocal, seems more comfortable and that's probably a product of being more confident. He knows these coaches (long and Alexander) and I'm sure he can give the other guys some insight.

I'm glad we have cam smith. He's bringing a lot to the team. I don't know how much he'll bring to the field though, were about to find out. Could be a lot, but it's hard to tell from practice videos. If he's really starting, then he's recovered and healthy.

Thanks

So Smith appears to be the speedy guy

Canteen is more of a mystery because he sat out last year and has switched positions......which means either he SHOWED lots during practice or our other wideouts were a tad less then stellar.....

I guess though there will be an active rotation and whomever makes plays will get their chances for more time

Will be watching them closely....

In Canteen's case, we all know how flip-flopping a player between positions can stunt their development, especially when it involves both sides of the ball Both offense and defense have different mindsets.

On one side, you're trying to beat the defender, on the other you become the defender that has to beat the player on offense. It's one reason I've never been a big fan of two way players, another being it takes a physical toll over the course of a season.

I do think it's because of their maturity as much of anything. We will see if they are actually getting the catches

I also expect a ton of WRs to play

I'll be the first to admit I don't even know what Canteen looks like. He wasn't highlighted much in camp film or anything. I don't want to improperly judge him, but it is strange to me that he is listed as a co-starter. I'm not sure that lasts long. Sanders/Finke will probably play more than him, and the TE usage in the slot will be key in Long's offense.

Also, someone like Claypool (listed as EQ's backup) I bet sees time in the slot, and that has been something practiced in camp.

As for Cam Smith, I think he can be a player. He was a solid player at ASU pre knee injuries and it looks like those are fully behind him. He won't be the main piece to the puzzle or anything, but a guy that can catch 30ish balls and be a down hill threat wouldn't be surprise me.

I was expecting about 42 balls. He caught 52 one year at ASU before the injury. Something tells me he's out to prove something

I am surprised they are ahead of guys like Stepherson, Sanders, Claypool and others.

I expect us to play alot and rotate in but I am particularly upset we wont see Sanders starting in the slot. I thought he was one of if not the most underutilized player on the team last season.

I'm with you.

It's just not adding up from where I sit. As long as BK been here he's always promised to play a bunch of wr's but it never seems to happen.

ESB seems like a lock and I doubt he comes out too much

They've talked about playing 2 tight ends so how are all of these guys getting time? not to mention Alize may play outside sometimes.

When you include Gilman who is a sophomore transfer from Navy who the staff treats like a savior, it makes me wonder how much development our guys are getting.

I've officially written off Boykin as well as sanders (They don't know how to use him)Mckinley is on deck.

An inexperienced QB surrounded by inexperienced receivers. Should we start to worry?

Well Stepherson is suspended or else I think he would be a starter.

Regarding Sanders and Claypool, I wonder if it has anything to do with blocking, both on screens and downfield. I could see those two being used more on passing downs and as change of pace.

I'm with you.

Given that the entire staff was basically fired, I'd say the guys haven't been developed much at all, or else ND wouldn't have been 4-8 last year. Hopefully the new coaches change that.

I'd also say let's see them play a game before we write off half the WR corps. Who knows how Ling wants to use them.

It's not like I'm writing off guys like Canteen and Smith but I've never seen them play. I can't get college tape on either just their high school tapes which I could care less about.

By all accounts Smith seems like he can play but I've never even heard of Canteen. I know there are politics and stuff that goes on at times but I don't believe he sniffed the field much at Michigan and they haven't had good receiving corps in awhile.

Canteen played in 11 games as a freshman at Michigan. Started two, including vs Ohio St. Had a handful of catches and a TD vs Ohio St. That isn't a terrible year for a freshman.

When Harbaugh came in, Canteen didn't seem to fit with his scheme and they tried him as a CB for a bit. Last year, he was out with injuries.

So not a totally unexpected career path given the situation. Coaching changes and injuries derail many a player.

But he was a 4* recruit with supposed 4.43 speed, so it isn't as though he is a walk on coming in. Even though he lacks experience, it isn't as though we shouldn't expect a 4* senior WR to be able to play somewhere.

At the 6 minute mark is his touchdown and really the only play I could find, Smith has a few plays on youtube too.

They are old, experienced and fast so I hope they can contribute and make this wide receiver group very deep. Having Boykin, Claypool, Sanders, Stepherson and others there gives us an embarrassment of riches.

We know one or two guys usually goes down so we should be fine all season here.

Rumor is he is suspended for four games

Go back and watch the ND be ASU game in Tempe. Smith had I believe a good day against us. Hauled in a td too.

I want to see Finke get a lot of pt. I don't care about his background. Dude is just a natural, good receiver. Everytime he's in there, he produces, has good hands and runs good routes. He should start frankly imo. Highly intrigued by Claypool. I could almost see him as a poor man's ESB. Guys there is plenty of talent here. Not worried about receivers honestly.

Denbrock wasn't fired and he coached wr's for years. Had some good ones

According to long he wants to use a lot of them as well as a lot of Tight ends. I think you and I both know those are exaggerated promises. I'm just saying something doesn't add up. It was suggested that some of our guys that transferred were sorta pushed out. I wonder if this is whats happening here.

Sounds a lot like Corey Holmes except Corey was a much higher rated recruit. Not attacking the kid but something is going on. I mean we may take 4 wr's in this recruiting haul with only 1 guy out of eligibility, meanwhile we don't have a single corner.
