August 29, 20177 yr Surprises to me: Two freshmen as backup defensive tackles and Freddy Canteen and Cam Smith as starting WR's. Depth Chart Guessing guys like Claypool, Finke, Boykin and Sanders will be part of a constant WR rotation
August 29, 20177 yr I figured Cam Smith would start. He was already in this offense and had a good year in it before he got injured. A little surprised about Canteen. Also, Crawford not starting. Everything else seems about right
August 29, 20177 yr DT is a MAJOR soft spot on this team which is never a good thing. Hopefully the youngsters can step up.
August 29, 20177 yr I figuredAlso, Crawford not starting. Believe he is the starting Nickel Corner and the depth chart reflects a 4-3 base defense (ya, ya Rover is a hybrid but really its just a small OLB). I'm sure Crawford will start ALOT of games in the Nickel.
August 29, 20177 yr What an ugly depth chart. So many holes/question marks on this team. Some of our bigger named recruits arent even listed. Nick Coleman starting at Safety scares the S*** out of me. I havent seen his ability to cover or tackle yet. Edited August 29, 20177 yr by PJackson'sDred15
August 29, 20177 yr What an ugly depth chart. So many holes/question marks on this team. A lot of the bigger named recruits arent even listed. Really? Where do you see all of the holes? RT is about the only issue I can see on offense, but that is manned by a top tier recruit. DT has very little depth, so that is a concern for sure, but at least there are some big bodies to work with. Then S is a concern, but again, there are at least a few decent athletes for Elko to work with and you might be able to slide a guy like Julian Love over there if needed. Martini would be the only other major concern, but if he held off Coney, who I like as a player, he must be doing something right. The Hayes' don't have a lot of experience, but they are both highly regarded recruits. Are there other holes I'm not seeing?

I think he has gotten by simply because he looks the part. So to me both tackles are of concern. Starting 2 transfer wr i feel legitimize my concern at wideout. Even if smith played in the offense before, is he a better route runner or have better hands then our recruits? Wr is one of if not the easiest position to pick up. Are other schools developing guys better than we have? Tranquil. Has he been playing out of position or is he not very good? We'll soon find out. DL and safety is already a known issue.

DL and safety is already a known issue. I'm assuming 6-7 WR will play each game, so I don't see the "starters" meaning much. McGlinchey might not be the top 10 pick some think, but he is still a legitimate college tackle. I guess it just comes down to what you determine is a "hole". Obviously not every spot has an All-american at it, but other than DT and S, I think there are at least average BCS level players at every other spot.
August 30, 20177 yr Nearly stunned that Crawford and Mack aren't starting. Especially Mack. They both better get plenty of tick. Honestly, I expected to see the true frosh tight ends over Smythe. Very eager to see the transfers at wr. I have a feeling they may do quite well. The true frosh at backup dt surprise me somewhat but it is what it is. I was hoping Dew-Treadway and Tiassum would step up (not saying they haven't but this isn't the best sign for them). Tillery and Bonner get ready to play a lot this year.

He is going to be a definite first round pick barring injury and is the top rated tackle for this upcoming draft on several sites. He does more than just "look the part". Some of you are completely lost.
August 30, 20177 yr Who????????? Javon McKinley, 4 star WR Darnell Ewell, 4 star DT Aaron Banks, 4 star OL David Adams, 4 star LB DJ Morgan 4 star S

Still questions on whether these guys are fast enough imo And two 5th year transfer types at WR? One who couldnt even touch the field at Michigan? That concerns me. I considered them depth guys. Apparently our own guys cant beat them out. Its not a shock that Cam Smith and Fred Canteen are atop our depth chart at WR? Edited August 30, 20177 yr by PJackson'sDred15
August 30, 20177 yr Javon McKinley, 4 star WR Darnell Ewell, 4 star DT Aaron Banks, 4 star OL David Adams, 4 star LB DJ Morgan 4 star S Most of those are freshman of course they are down on the depth chart. I will say McKinley is a real head scratcher not making the 3-deep as a Soph. I thought he was a top tier recruit coming in.
August 30, 20177 yr Wtf??? You're worried about McGlinchey? He is going to be a definite first round pick barring injury and is the top rated tackle for this upcoming draft on several sites. He does more than just "look the part". Some of you are completely lost.I'm not worried about McGlinchey, but he hasn't appeared as dominant as one may think. His frame and reach are nearly ideal for an offensive tackle. He was clearly weak last year and, reportedly, doubled his bench press. We need him and Nelson to crush people this year. I'm a realist. I expected more of them last year. No doubt in my mind they can kill it this year and both be sure fire 1st rounders.

DL and safety is already a known issue.I look at it the other way at the wr. They are just that much better than others currently. Keep in mind that Canteen has 2 years also. Cam Smith is fast and is experienced in this offense. Cam Smith and ESB are going to be a nice 1-2 punch this year. A bit more surprised about Canteen honestly but certainly going to give him a fair shot. Tranquil has been hurt and is now healthy and bigger. Doubt he lost any speed. This is a new defense with a new position just for him. He just needs to be aggressive in this position. Fairly intrigued by Bilal in the position also with his speed. I foresee both kids performing quite well in this position.
August 30, 20177 yr To anyone curious about Canteen and Smith's attributes read below. Both kids are fast. ESB, Canteen, and Smith could seriously do some damage this season. http://www.ndinsider.com/football/notre-dame-transfer-freddy-canteen-is-built-for-speed-but/article_1bdde42a-f6c3-11e6-a30a-67daaa722032.html http://www.ndinsider.com/football/notre-dame-adds-graduate-transfer-wr-cameron-smith-from-arizona/article_1680f15c-4a3d-11e7-a675-63259b902d69.html We have great depth at receiver with Claypool, Finke, McKinley, Sanders, Young, and Boykin also.
August 30, 20177 yr Javon McKinley, 4 star WR Darnell Ewell, 4 star DT Aaron Banks, 4 star OL David Adams, 4 star LB DJ Morgan 4 star S Dj Morgan is likely a bust, think he is in the rover/safety role now and agree on McKinley not sure why he hasn't established himself but the other 3 are freshman, can't really be shocked by that
August 30, 20177 yr You just named 5. I would add CBs as another concern. Fair enough. I guess the depth chart just has to be prefaced by reality and expectations. ND isn't going to have All-Americans at every spot. The only teams that do that are Ohio St. and Alabama and even they have weak spots. To me, DT and S are the only true questions on the team. Other spots might not have elite players, but I think they are all serviceable college players capable of playing for a top 25 team. As far as Canteen, he was a 4* top 40 WR, so he has some raw ability. I also wouldn't be shocked if ND came out in a two TE set, ran Claypool in the slot a few times early and Canteen was actually the 5th or 6th WR to see the field. With such a rotation expected at WR, I see that depth chart as more of a suggestion than anything else. I'm sure at some point we will see EQ, Boykin and Claypool on the field at the same time, even though they are all listed at the same spot. If it turns out that Smith and Canteen are playing 70% of the snaps and those others not at all, then I will start to be concerned. Also, since Kelly has stated he wants starters on special teams, it wouldn't shock me to find out he only listed Canteen as "starter" so when he is on kick teams, Kelly can keep his claim. August 30, 20177 yr Has anyone stopped to consider the fact that Georgia is the following week? Maybe, just maybe, BK is looking ahead a week. I am not saying he isn't focused on Temple but maybe he has a few set packages he feels we can win against Temple with and then will unleash our full offensive potential come Georgia. The WR's look like we have speed set up for Temple and will mix in 6-7 more guys as the game moves along. Long also likes to leave the same package on the field and no sub. That could be the angle here. Come out fast and strike quick with our speedy and experienced receivers. This also helps break in BW to start the season. Some comfort and leadership out there within this offense. Jumbo packages coming week of Georgia!
Surprises to me: Two freshmen as backup defensive tackles and Freddy Canteen and Cam Smith as starting WR's.
