SpeedsterX 752
Other than an Oline that looks pretty good on paper, everyone else is unproven. Don't get me wrong, I think BK can produce at least 25+ points a game with just about anyone but some are talking about the offense will be great. Why? And you know what? The last few years, it seems like everything being opposite. So, I am going to say the Defense will be better than the Offense. Why? because that's just how it's been for a few years. Honestly, I'm not that impressed with Wimbush. I'm not only talking about the Spring Game, I'm talking about any action I've seen for him in College. FaithInIrish Forever 5,591
When I was in the bend, I felt the defense more than the offense. My biggest concern on offense is team speed. I hope Cameron Smith is that 1 year lightning bolt that CJ Prosise was. I know different position but Prosise he gave the offense more presence to free up Fuller, in 2015. I hope similiarly. Smith and Mack can free up ESB. ND's offense is still faster than they were in 2012. If you figure Mack is as fast as Eifert. ESB is probably a Step faster than Daniels. Smith or Stepherson can be Chris Brown. Slots faster than Toma. Cameron Smith is a player I keep coming back to. Guy knows Long's offense and is in great Shape. Adams is faster than Riddick but doesn't catch it as well. Cierre and Dexter are VERY Similiar if you ask me. Jones is Bigger than Riddick has those same good hands but same as Theo isn't a breakaway speed guy. I think Nelson is as good as Watt. But will Mcglinchey ever be Zach Martin and is Mustipher like Cave? Cave was quite a power lifter but lacked technique sometimes. Our Right side is probably as good with Some Combination of say Bars and Kreamer vs Golic and Lombard. . I like veteran defenses. This is one. It should be productive. I see the offense as having great potiential, but I feel more sure that the defense will be productive. hawaiiirish 62
Reasons to be HIGH on the offense...... 1 Brandon Wimbush Top 50 recruit , one of our highest ranked recruits in the last 5 years In the program for two years , all the physical tools Kelly has had excellent success with first time starting QBs-- Kizer may have been better his first year then his second but Golson/Zaire/ Kizer even Rees played close to their top ability from the get go Expect a strong season from him 2 - Oline may be the best Kelly has had ---2 serious AA contenders and lots of talent across the front Expect the best running attack we have seen in awhile 3-- 1000 yard back that has been improving every season in Adams and two good looking RBs with him 4---Don't sleep on these pass catchers EQB is real good but its HIGHLY LIKELY that at least one of stephersen/ boynkin/claypool will BREAK OUT as REAL GOOD as well. Add to that Jones out of the backfield and the RETURN of the TE with Alzie et al I WILL BE SHOCKED IF THE OFFENSE IS NOT FIRST CLASS aloha
jessemoore97 1,479
New QB and an OL with two new guys. All the AA talk for our left side, remember they are only as strong as their weakest link. I'm not as high on the offense, wait and see mode, for the whole team.
irishrb 0
IMO, the offense should be top notch for several reasons: 1. BK is not calling plays. I really think he finally lets that go. My wife would be an upgrade over him, so Long should be even better. 2. As mentioned above, the O-line should be close to elite. This should allow for some conservative playcalling, if needed, for Wimbush. Run the ball, do some quick hitting, easy, play-action throws to Mack, and then open it up. ndomer4 532
There's no reason this offense shouldn't be one of the best in the country. While we don't recruit all that well on defense, this offense might have the best collection of talent in the country. There are 5 and 4 star players who have produced at every spot on the offense, productive guys too. My optimism lies around Wimbush, imo he is a better JT Barrett and we have to let him play like that. Don't make him a pocket passer, let him carry it ten or fifteen times a game and get him on a lot of rollouts.
Frankus 212
FWIW: Kizer said this about Wimbush in an Indianapolis Star article: “Brandon and I are best friends,” Kizer said. “When I made the decision to leave Notre Dame, I knew I’d be leaving it in good hands at the quarterback position. He’s just as athletic (as me). As big of an arm as I believe I have, he has a bigger arm than I have — the guy can throw the ball 80 yards like it’s no big deal. He’s gonna look like a 3-4 year starting veteran in his first game. I’m very confident.” The "3-4 year starting veteran in his first game" comment makes me wonder how many changes they're really making to the offense. However, there's a lot of intangibles associated with playing QB and Barret is a proven winner.
OklahomaIrish 0
I think Hawaii nailed it pretty good. Basically I look for talent, experience, depth, power and speed. The O line is the most important aspect of all of the components and it looks like Kelly's number one unit of his entire life. Quarterback, though unproven, looks like the most talented ever in Kelly's regime. Tight ends, ditto, best and deepest ever. Receiver?? Deepest and most talented unit ever. Running back, again maybe the most talented, powerful and deepest unit ever. Seriously. This is unproven, but it should show in game one. Add to this that we have a very good signal caller in Chip Long and he has exactly what he needs, especially with all the talented tight ends. We won't have to wait long for this to happen. With that said I expect Kelly to hold back against Temple in preparation for Georgia. Get Ready.

Last year we got heavy with EQ and Tori. Then teams knew who to pay most attention to. The Result was Kizer against all comers and he's a good player but without guys like Fuller and Prosise, and Alize, ouch. So hopefully we spread the wealth. Allowing guys to get some single coverage AND we get the play action advantage that starts with a good run and option game. I'm a excited about the Potiential as possible. I'll be even more thrilled when wec see it in action.

I'd take Barrett and Meyer's scheme over Wimbush and Kelly any day. I'd take Meyer's scheme with Wimbush and ND's line and skill position players over Kelly's system with Barrett and OU's players any day. I get tired of watching ND force the ball to certain players over and over, when others teams are running spread and have guys running wide open all over the field multiple times a game. It seems pretty rare that ND outschemes the defense to allow a WR to be literally wide open somewhere.

Yeah I'm hoping a guy like Cameron Smith has a good year on the complete opposite side of the field as EQ. If teams truly have to cover the full width this offense can work well. If production is not really spread out the spread offense becomes a bit of a misnomer.

I'd caution you to down it down a notch on your assessments, just so when your let down not to be too upset. We've had an oline with two Martin brothers, Watt, and Stanley. We've had Jonas Gray and Cierre Wood go off in 2011 and Riddick/Wood in 2012. We had Eifert/Rudolph/Koyack on the same roster, Also had Jones/Riddick/Floyd/Daniels in 2011. Zaire/Kizer in 15, etc.... Yeah Adams, and ESB are proven but what has Smythe done? Mack is all hype atm, o-line was average last year, who's been consistent as a second receiver? Basically it's all potential and we know as ND fans how that turns out sometimes. Basically calling any unit on this team Kelly's deepest, most talented in his tenure is extremely optimistic and premature. Sorry but any unit coming off a 4-8 season has proven nothing to me. These guys are all unproven until they start winning, the only group who has a case is that runningback duo might be able to go off this year. Equin. St. Brown goes straight down the sideline and Wimbush hits him up high about 20 yards down the field and the db can't come close to the ball. Just look at all these big targets, St. Brown, Mack, Claypool, Smythe, and Boykin. Throw in the speed with the two transfers and Stepherson and it should be pretty exciting. Was listening to one of the podcasts and they explained that at times, no matter what the linebacker does he is wrong Wimbush is going to be special. Frankus 212
There is an article in today's South Bend Tribune saying Wimbush hasn't been "part of a collision" since the hit he took in the 2015 Pittsburg game. I'm amazed at how little these quarterbacks ever get hit in practices. You would think he'd have played in live scrimmages in practices where he got tackled, but apparently that's not the case.
