VCDomer
I just watched the Catholics vs Concvicts 30 for 30 documentary (again) on ESPNU. Maybe they played it again intentionally on the heels of Coach Ara's passing or maybe because the college football training camps just opened. It got me thinking about the best defensive stand in ND history. With some qualifiers, is the best stop in the modern era of ND football the 1988 game vs Miami's failed 2 pt convesion attempt or is it the 2012 goal line stand versus Stanford? Both games put us in The NC game (with different outcomes). I saw them both on tv. I would vote for the 2012 stop. Miami lost their shot at the NC game because of the failed 2pt attempt. They would have played for it and won it with a tie on the road that day in SB. I think the 2012 stop was better because we would have never had a shot at the NC had we not won the game on that stop. Feeling sentimental about both undefeated seasons and the loss of coach Ara.

corysold
Stanford was 4 plays vs. 1 for Miami. So that has to count for something. Plus, the drama with the rain starting, etc. I think I'd pick that one. The USC stop later in the year was pretty good too, though not as much on the line. Irish_Convert
That fourth quarter sequence against USuC in 2012 has to be up there as well, despite ND repeatedly trying to shoot itself in the foot with penalties. [ame] [/ame]

That was another game that season that ND should have lost. USC was without their starting QB and played one who had never played. And it still came down to the last play of the game on a dropped pass. That was a 9-3 or even an 8-4 team that just get getting incredibly lucky until they met a big boy in the end. Pregame
2012 Stanford was amazing. I was like 8 rows up on the goalline for that game, incredible view....he may have gotten in but its too late now and we've had enough calls against us. I don't necessarily disagree with the premise that the 2012 team was fortunate to go 12-0. There were a ton of close wins and lucky bounces along the way. But this is the same logic that people use when they say that the 2015 team was unlucky and could have finished 11-1 or even 12-0 if two or three plays had gone differently at Clemson and at Stanford. Or when people say that the 2014 team should have beaten FSU to start 7-0. Those arguments are usually shot down because results matter. The 2012 found ways to win and that's really all that counts. Yeah, remember that 9 point Hail Mary USC tried on the last play? So close. ND won by 9. If didn't come down to a last pass. STFU.
EddieAngel
Didn't ND under Weis have something like a 8 play goal line stand against Washington? Yes, because on the original fourth down play ND got a BS "Roughing the Snapper" call that gave Washington another set of downs. If I recall ND was heavily favored and that was the opening game of the season. 2009, maybe not the first game, Weis era is a haze.
