Start with weight gains....

Freshmen Make Major Weight Gains

One of Notre Dame's final additions last cycle might rate as summer's biggest surprise.

On the program's updated roster for fall camp, freshman defensive lineman Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa checked in at a massive 6-foot-2 ½, 293 pounds, which represents a drop of an inch-and-a-half from his listed size on National Signing Day by Notre Dame, but also marks a 43-pound jump in weight.

Recruited as a potential strong-side defensive end or defensive tackle, the Hawaiian, who Notre Dame landed in recruiting's final days, will clearly shift inside. Sources told Irish Illustrated during summer workouts that Tagovailoa-Amosa had impressed the staff this off-season.

The remainder of the freshman class, plus the program's three incoming transfers, are listed below with their official weight change from National Signing Day noted in parentheses. It's not clear how to read all the gains and losses, but there were some other wild swings since February.

Defensive tackle Darnell Ewell was up 41 pounds to 6-3, 321 pounds. That could put the four-star prospect from Virginia into the nose guard group out of the gate. Oddly, wide out Jafar Armstrong was listed as making a 44-pound jump, up to 6-0 ¾, 214 pounds. For a supposed speed receiver, it will be interesting to see how he wears that weight during August.

Eleven other members of the freshman class were listed with double-digit gains or losses. Safety Jordan Genmark-Heath, tight end Cole Kmet, offensive tackle Josh Lugg, defensive end Kofi Wardlow and wide receiver Michael Young were all listed as having made jumps of at least 20 pounds from National Signing Day. At 6-5 ½, 256 pounds, Kmet is listed as the same height and one pound lighter than fifth-year senior Durham Smythe.

The two freshmen who lost significant weight were offensive guard Dillan Gibbons, down 21 pounds to 6-foot-4, 294, and defensive end Jonathan MacCollister, down 11 pounds to 6-3 ¼, 233.

No. 35 David Adams 6-0 ¾, 234 (+12)

No. 25 Jafar Armstrong 6-0 ¾, 214 (+44)

No. 69 Aaron Banks 6-5 ¾, 325 (+5)

Kelly exhaling constantly while speaking bugs me, maybe he just doesn't like press conferences...?

Part of me feels like he just doesn't want to be there, it just seems as though he has little enthusiasm. Someone once suggested he wasn't prepared for how bright the spotlight would be at ND and I'm leaning toward agreeing with that.

Ah, it wouldn't be the preseason without the "Andrew Trumbetti is going to be an impact player this season" hype.

Nevertheless, so pumped for tomorrow.

Yeah been hearing the same thing for 4 years now. I never thought he was a bad player or anything but he's never been an impact guy.

I don't know guys , Trumbetti did show flashes on several plays last season....he has the want to , and enough technique to get around/by the tackle now and then...

What really IMO separated him from a really good player was him being a bit slow too often.....if the weight and another year adds some quickness he may be better then many of you think!

aloha

Some thoughts

Brian Kelly says Alohi Gilman’s eligibility appeal could come shortly.

That brings back memories of the frozen four. I hope this doesn't drag out into the season.

Brian Kelly said Jerry Tillery faced internal discipline, underwent counseling and performed community service after last season’s end.

translation: a slap on the wrist. I really would love to see what qualifies as counseling.

Brian Kelly said kicker Justin Yoon had an “outstanding” summer and is physically fit after missing spring practice.

Yep. possibly getting replaced by a walk on could light a fire under someone.

Asked what feels different heading into this camp versus past pre-seasons, Brian Kelly starts with “positive coaching environment."

I said in the past that I detected tension on the coaching staff. This kinda confirms it.

Kelly, on how the 4-8 season affected him: "For me, there was a lot of growth as a head coach after 26 years.

What a generic answer. If he said any more, we'd probably still be dragging people out from under a bus. So it was smart

CB Shaun Crawford is fully cleared and doing everything. DT Elijah Taylor is 10 days to two weeks away from full return.

Translation: They won't be ready for Temple.

What's the biggest thing Kelly learned from last season? "I focused way too much on production and not the process itself."

I may be wrong but wasn't the "process" his catchphrase going into last season?

Brian Kelly: "We know the #1 quarterback is Brandon Wimbush." So there you have it.

Translation: Lets not talk about last years 2 qb debacle.

Brian Kelly talking about @DrSelking, who’s working with Irish roster. Helps players understand mental prep. Notre Dame alumna.

I think the physical prep is what needs to be addressed.

Brian Kelly says Quenton Nelson and Mike McGlinchey “off the charts” in improving power/explosion this off-season.

Brian Kelly says Quenton Nelson's power improvement from January to today is "off the charts." I didn't know that was possible.

Man it sucks that our guys got cheated out of a real strength program for so long.

Brian Kelly says that Andrew Trumbetti is 262 pounds. "Wait until you see him play." He'll be trained to play both sides.

We've seen him play. If he's gotten so much better after one spring with these coaches compared to 3 seasons under BVG, that's on you coach. I think it's typical BK BS. If he was so good he'd have locked down a position rather than being a utility guy.

Let the fun begin.
