FaithInIrish Forever 5,568
Little over 46 days until our beloved Irish return to action. I'm interested in the QB and the Defense, as well as seeing if a guy like a Cameron Smith can surprise us and bring the speed factor up a notch. I think the core of the offense will be pretty good. The core I refer to as Offensive Line, Running Backs, and Tight Ends. Defensively I think the group is veteran enough to win some battles. We'll see if the team as the athleticism necessary though early when we play Georgia. The aim of this thread is to learn about the team, new faces, key contributors, etc. What info would you like as the season approaches? What would you like to research? Any X and O type stuff you'd like to see drawn up? This will be fun. Hope you guys and gals will help me countdown. davislove 0
The oline has me spooked. When teams talk about playing 2 tight ends lead me to think they have some concerns with blocking. They also moved claypool to the slot so I'm keeping my eyes on the line blocking. Do you think the rover position is a turn off for potential safety recruits? Is the rover used much in the nfl? FaithInIrish Forever 5,568
Well I will say this offense likes to get on the edges. So when your moving your QB on bootlegs, half rolls and such your gonna need some blockers on the edge as well. Rovers should be ok to recruit. Its a slower safety at times so people might not love the star rating but remember it functions as a linebacker. nfl base, nickel dime, and speciality defenses, so I'm sure there is a part time role for rover in the NFL which will go more fulltime if teams continue to spread and conventional linebackers prove to be to slow. It's a match-up based slot defender. Sorry davis I hit a wrong button. Should be all fixed now. davislove 0
2TE formations is simply the way Chip Long runs his offense So what does that mean for our slot guy? Will he essentially be the 2nd TE in some cases, does that mean sanders is pretty much not needed as well as claypool for that matter or will we only have one wideout at times and almost look like a 3 TE package? I also thought I heard BK say that his offense will still be used.

It has nothing to do with the offensive line. With that said, I don't think 2 TEs will be used on every play. Outside of Kelly having a say, I'm sure Long has various variations of his offense. Aliz'e Mack, however will probably be the defacto slot receiver in many of these formations. I'm sure the hope is that he is simply too good to take off the field. Sanders, Finke, etc will have a role though. I'm sure of it. 2 WRs will usually be on the field. I don't see many 3 TE sets happening. FaithInIrish Forever 5,568
45 45 was Rudy's number. This team may have that "45" feel to it. Coming back with lots to prove and many doubts shouted about. I met Rudy the other year. Nice guy, spoke at my dad's work gathering. We talked about Joe Schmidt at the time. I bet he'd like Chris Finke So what does that mean for our slot guy? The Reconfiguration allows for better blocking match-ups. Also gives quick twitch guys more space to work, and more area to build up speed on jet sweep actions. hawaiiirish 62
I think the OFFENSIVE LINE is going to be TERRIFIC!!! That will be the big surprise for us since we tend to expect underperformance there This season the offensive tweaks/ redesign that LONG brings will let these guys with the SHOWY resumes and size play their best Running game will be the best since WOOD/ RIDDICK 2012 Offense will be dynamic playing behind one of the country's best OLINES! Defense is anyones guess but will be interesting to see what we can do with an OK roster that needs coaching Looking forward to the season aloha Edited July 20, 2017 by hawaiiirish

FaithInIrish Forever 5,568
So guys like sanders will be playing outside? I think this kid is under utilized. He will at times. I also see him as a focused return man as well. Yep. Long likes a corner vs a a smaller receiver better than an outside linebacker. Its strange at first. But think about it in run blocking and it makes sense. Sanders is maybe 190. Corners are 190. Linebackers are 225-240, Sanders is maybe 190. Sanders has more room to break free on the outside to. Will also run some in-breaking routes like slants anyway.

FaithInIrish Forever 5,568
41..40.. Only person I can think of for this one is 40 year old Defensive Coordinator Mike Elko. He's designed a defense that makes it hard on QB's to pass. His defense typically cause turnovers and is difficult to convert a 3rd down against...3rd down article by 18 stripes blog , Irish Sports Daily Article, Originally Posted by Frankus. Defensively I think the group is veteran enough to win some battles. The aim of this thread is to learn about the team, new faces, key contributors, etc. Even though guys like Jay Hayes, Andrew Trumbetti, Jonathan Bonner, Jerry Tillery are all veterans none of them have proven to be stout. The only guy who is physically elite is Tillery and he's playing out of position. He's too big to be a NT and loses leverage. He'd be better as a 3-technique, but we have no nose tackles. On the next level, although Morgan, Martini/Coney, Tranquil could also be considered veterans, the only one who is outstanding is Morgan. All of the others either have a history of being not physical enough and/or not fast enough. I think every team will be able to run on us. The more physical teams (Georgia, MSU, Stanford, USC, Navy) will all be able to run the ball very successfully. When a team can do that, that opens up the passing game forcing us into more single coverage in a weak secondary. Consequently, I expect us to give up a lot of points. Hopefully, our offense can win shootouts. We'll see. I like our offensive personnel, but you never know how a new offense is going to gel. Wimbush is the key. If he can convert (hopefully) short yardage 3rd down situations-unfortunately a hallmark of Kelly's offense is 3rd down and 10 situations that we can only hope will change- we could have both an explosive and consistent offense, something that has eluded Kelly for much of his tenure. KamaraPolice 0
You make some good points frankus, id just counter with this: Jay Hayes is elite physically. He'll play in the NFL. Tranquil certainly is physical and fast. And I like how he attacked in elkos defense. Speed can be handicapped by overly complex defenses. If the guys get it, and the opposing offense can't do anything to slow them down, the results are great (think Michigan 31-0 *37-0). However, that was the exception during bvg. I think elko's defense will be different. Asmar bilal is a freak, he needs to take a step forward now that things have been simplified for him. Daelin Hayes is a freak as well. And Shaun Crawford is a playmaker when he's healthy. The defense has the pieces to be good. A lot of might center on how well jerry Tilley plays upfront and center; I hope we see an advancement in his game after training with balis. KamaraPolice 0
I'll also add that the time is now for Elijah Taylor and Micah dew-treadway. If one or both step up, it'll alleviate our concerns about run defense
goirish83 0
I think the defense will surprise as well, not saying they'll be great by any means but I think they'll be substantially better then last season. Elko did a helluva lot with a lot less talent at wake
Frankus 210
Jay Hayes is elite physically. He'll play in the NFL. I wish we could place bets on this site. There's no way he's going to be drafted. Tranquil certainly is physical and fast. And I like how he attacked in elkos defense. Wait till MSU, Stanford, Georgia, Stanford and USC pulls linemen and runs at Tranquil. They're going to crush him. Asmar bilal is a freak, he needs to take a step forward now that things have been simplified for him. How can a guy with two years of playing experence and having done nothing be a "freak"? Jaylon Smith was a freak. Bilal is no Smith. Daelin Hayes is a freak as well. We'll see. Had an Ok first year. Certainly not Jaylon Smith territory. You throw the word "freak' around too lightly imo. And Shaun Crawford is a playmaker when he's healthy. I don't remember him making any plays and he's had two major injuries The defense has the pieces to be good. A lot of might center on how well jerry Tilley plays upfront and center; I hope we see an advancement in his game after training with balis. Were just gonna have to agree to disagree. We'll see. Hope I'm wrong.
