hawaiiirish
Athlon June forcast for ND and its opponents Miami--# 23 Notre dame # 20 Stanford # 17 Georgia # 15 USC #5 _______________________ Comments include For # 15 Georgia----QB should be better--running game with Sony M & N Chubb should be dynamic---receivers are questionable---defense is good led by the LBs and an experienced secondary---picked to win SEC east For # 17 Stanford---QB coming back from knee injury---strength of the team the OLINE and the Secondary----expected to compete for the pac 12 north with Washington---NOT as effusive a write up as for Georgia For # 23 Miami---7 starters return form a defense that held opponents to 18.5----offense though is questionable --Qb very unsettled , may end up with a true frosh--clearly Defense the story of this team For #5 USC--QB Sam Darnold makes them a Playoff contender--offensive line needs to be completely rebuilt due to graduation. loss of eligibility, NFL & injuries---So question marks there but enough talent and a strong QB makes them the best of this bunch For # 20 Notre Dame---Lost seven games in 2016 by 8 points or less---came out rated #29 in F/+ratings----Wimbush candidate for major breakout season # 45 recruit ready to take charge---RBs excellent--Receivers very good---return of Alzie should be a big help---McGlinchy and Nelson AA candidates anchoring a good OLINE---OFFENSE gets a strong endorsement! New " STANDOUT" coordinators Elko and Long should contribute to a " QUICK REBOUND" for ND.----Defense has a "solid core of talent" led by Nyles Morgan but clearly is the question mark ,schedule also a problem with ND playing 11 bowl teams..... So all in all Athlon sees us as more potential then Domer Domain-- If I wasn't burned out a bit I would see lots of hope in playing only 2 really top teams---and potentially having a very STRONG OFFENSE---and an exceptional DC to squeeze what is possible out of our defense. Its pre-season and as many reasons (almost) to be hopeful then to despair... Offense could be very good---coordinators should change the rhythm we play and bad habits we have had over the last 3 seasons..... Maybe we will surprise ourselves---hey "it could happen"---- LOOK FOR GEORGIA to be the early chance to make these coordinators pay off and give this team a real shot at a strong season despite the LITANY of issues we rehash so often... Try and stay positive----ND football is a wonderful thing irrespective of the season to season struggles... Aloha--

Every year they like us. But this is as low as they have ever had us! Maybe national title run incoming.
OKCIrish99
The Georgia game is going to be huge and the tone setter for the entire season ala Texas 2016. I shudder to think about our defense attempting to stop Chubb & Michel but am mildly encouraged by hearing they may have oline issues. Still a strong SEC opponent. For the record, I am withholding all serious predictions for this team until I see what Wimbush and Elko's defense bring to the table. I am very eager to hear camp reports on both here in a couple months. Notre Dame and Kelly really need a big season. Beating Georgia at home in week 2 would set the tone. hawaiiirish
Its true Athlon ranks us high often, but then we normally have a roster that gets us ranked by most everyone--last year the BIG POLLS had us at 10ish..... Nonetheless----They make a rationale case--- we have a lot of potential POP on offense---if Wimbush is the real deal he has PLENTY of talent and big time "potential" stars surrounding him on offense. I think its also NOTEWORTHY , that its been YEARS & YEARS since anyone could evaluate our team by saying " we have hired TWO STANDOUT coordinators" ====you really have to go back a long way to make that statement credible. IF / That's IF / Kelly truly delegates and these guys really are STANDOUTS , we could see some very positive effects from the get go.... Did ANYONE really call BVG a standout coordinator? NO---indeed he was in the abyss of NFL LB coaching---all he really had was kellys friendship.... Weis and TY were a mess at both spots DC and OC ---in fact Weis like Kelly wanted figureheads as OC and suffered for it You have to go back FAAAAAR to find two coordinators running NDs offense and defense that would be called standouts Diaco was called a standout DC but that was after 2012 not coming in== though he certainly was a HGYTLOAD better then BVG.... So I put lots of hopes on these two coaches to get MORE out of the roster then we have been getting . It should be exciting to see what they bring to the table aloha Edited June 22, 2017 by hawaiiirish

ELDER06
Why does the U get so much hype EVERY year? Christ, even last year's ND team beat them and they lost Kaaya at QB.
echo88
Why does the U get so much hype EVERY year? Christ, even last year's ND team beat them and they lost Kaaya at QB. Probably because they still hung an average of 45 points against teams they were supposed to easily beat on paper... We should have 50-60 against some of the teams we play but that will def not happen with Spanky at the helm... The U has been overrated going back to when Randy Shannon was HC. If I recall, people thought JaCory Harris would win the Heisman.
Jersey Irish
Athelon likes ND fans to buy their s*hit magazine... should be the the title of this thread I thought ND wasnt relevant anymore as so many posters like to point out? echo88
This comment makes no sense. The U has been overrated going back to when Randy Shannon was HC. If I recall, people thought JaCory Harris would win the Heisman. Look at the scores. It makes a lot of sense. So they're overrated yet they can beat the bricks off of teams that are outmatched? Why can't we? Either UM is overrated or we are too....

Last time ND played a team even close to the first two, they scored 62 on UMass. Even in a 4-8 year, ND averaged 45 against the three worst teams they played.
