Zaire's father: Trust between Kelly, Malik broken

The father of Malik Zaire said his son never considered returning to ND this fall because the trust between he and HC Brian Kelly had been broken.

Per Rotoworld:

"You know, shame on you the first time, shame on me the second time," Imani Zaire said. "… I don’t think Malik wanted to chance it because the relationship, I think, kind of soured a little bit." DeShone Kizer took over as the Irish’s starting quarterback after Zaire broke his ankle early on during the 2015 season. Though Kizer left this winter, becoming a second-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, Zaire never seriously considered returning to the Irish. His father indicated that his son felt misled about his odds of starting twice, both during Zaire’s redshirt freshman year, when Everett Golson reclaimed his old job after an academic suspension, and following Zaire's return from injury last fall.

Yeah, I'd say his odds of starting weren't very good because he was sitting behind a guy who went in the 2nd round. Was Kizer perfect? No, but he was better than Zaire.

We all saw the clip where Kelly told him it was still his team after he broke his ankle. But guess what, if you can't perform the job as good as another guy, the other guy gets the job.

It isn't like Kelly didn't try to play Zaire. That Texas fiasco was one of the most bizarre things ever. He just didn't play well enough.

Golson/ Zaire/ Hendrix/ Kiel and yes even Kizer ALL LOST TRUST with BK

Ironically only Tommy Rees has gotten more from Kelly then he expected in confidence , playing time, overall mutual trust.....

Kelly has made a MESS of handling his QBs IMHO----

I agree. Zaire had heart, was perfect as a ND starter even if it was a few games. Look LSU in a bowl game and a season opener against Texas is never going to be easy. Texas was a bad team, but for a fresh QB in that atmosphere performing the way he did is still huge. I hope he does great things.

"MESS" is a generous characterization. Amazing that the least physically talented QB of them all seemed to avoid the standard regression our QBs experience under Kelly's development.

Indeed. I don't know what goes on behind the scenes but the QB situation has been a cluster**** almost every year since BK was hired. It wouldn't be so bad if part of his reputation wasn't built on developing them..

Every team has QBs that transfer but the number of them that have under BK seems disproportionately high. I imagine some of these kids see the writing on the wall and get out while the getting's good.

He had a chance to perform against Texas and did not. The same team he had his primetime breakout game before.

He was having a decent game vs Virginia and got hurt.

He had an ok game vs LSU running the ball.

He's a very nice kid, but Kizer ran with the opportunity he was given. for 1 season. Struggled in Key times in 2nd year.

The word trust is loaded with emotion. A dad feels like a Son deserves more but its so easy to get emotional after a bad year.

Good luck to Malik. Time for both to move on.

Kelly hasn't handled his QBs well, but the talent level is also questionable. Kiel was passed up at UC and Golson was benched at FSU....so I they probably also lost trust with Head Coaches at their other schools. Kelly deserves his share of criticism (especially last year), but none of these QBs have been proven to be worthy of leading other top 20 type programs. The jury is out on Zaire, but Kizer was simply better. If any criticism is warranted it would be about more talent development IMO.

Oh give me a break. Hes been here for 8 years. If its a talent issue then thats on him. Its Notre Dame, you should be able to get talent at the QB position.

And the bottom line is every quarterback has regressed under BK. From Kizer last year all the way on down.

You know...I am absolutely sick and tired of these prima donna mutha f'ers of this soft asz era!!!

How 'bout you out perform your competition...how 'bout you compete your asz off everyday...how 'bout you ain't owed a damn thing...and how 'bout daddy stay out of things unless you are teaching your kid to be a man.

I liked Z but c'mon...it was good for that whole one game but I'm glad he has moved on and I seriously wish him well.

Question is, what do you do with a bunch of average QBs when you can't recruit a clear cut star. You have to keep them motivated and can't tell one they will start for sure because who knows what you get from one day to the next.

This is why Ian Book is so important. Kelly always recruited some kid who expected to start every recruiting cycle. That was never gonna work. You need to take a kid like Book who could be comfortable in a reserve role. Younger recruits aren't afraid of him plus he'll make a great back up down the line. Every few years you just need to take a kid who's gonna stick around and don't feel entitled to a starting role.

I thought Zaire got a raw deal last season. Despite BK claiming to give both Z and Kizer a fair shot, Deshone was his guy. Even in the Texas game, Malik didn't get a chance to make something happen.

That said, if you look at CBK's quarterback recruiting you'll notice a trend. His first choice is to get a taller pocket passer that is still able to run a little. If he misses on him his default back up is an athlete.

Yep, I thought Zaire got a raw deal as well. BK called different plays for both Zaire and Kizer as well.

Didn't BK assure Zaire's parents that he was his guy, it was his job or something like that?

That's very true! Another thing Kelley did was move his best offensive linemen to the left side, so that made it worse for Malik.
