Navy safety transferring to ND?

Per SBT: " Notre Dame football could be turning to Navy for safety aid.

"Last week, safety Alohi Gilman announced his plans to leave the U.S. Naval Academy. On Monday night, Notre Dame emerged as a potential destination for the sophomore from Laie, Hawaii.

"Gilman revealed on Twitter that he will be making a trip to South Bend.

“Excited to check out Notre Dame on an official visit,” Gilman wrote. “Grateful for the opportunity. #NextChapter @NDFootball.”

"The 6-foot, 195-pound Gilman made an impact in his first season at Navy last fall. He finished second on the team in tackles with 76, played in all 14 games with 12 starts and earned honorable mention All-AAC honors."

Would be a good get for us and a blow to Navy. Hope he lands here and is Irish!!!

I don't know about having to sit out, they've tweaked and relaxed the rules the last couple, few years. So often, it's hard to keep up.

Looks to me like the rules regarding sitting are the same as the last several years. Unless you can get an exception for an extraordinary circumstance (The Vanderdouche scenario), you sit a year unless you are transferring to DII or DIII or into a different sport in DI.

Wondering if service academy transfers are different since they might not be considered to have athletic scholarships since every student attends the academies for free.

I do not know if a walk on needs to sit out a year if he transfers to a school that will give him a scholarship.

FWIW, I've read that he will have to sit out. ND has a great shot here, and I think he will be a good player wherever he decides to go.

Looks to be a guy the services missed on and only went to Navy because it was of the only places he was offered by. Doesn't look to have any interest in actually being in the Navy and wants to pursue football.

He ran an electronically timed 4.65 40 at his HS combine. So, it's much more likely that he is comparable to what we already have, which isn't saying much.

From what I understand, if you leave the academy you have to pay back your tuition.

And that is the thing about the NCAA. It doesn't matter if you get a scholarship or not. If you were recruited at all to play for a school, whether you got money or even played, you still have to sit out an entire year. It's the biggest screw job ever. The aren't many things more evil than the NCAA.

well, he led the Navy in tackles against ND last year with 12! I'd welcome him with open arms. He seems like the kind of player Elko could do wonders with.:yo:

Unless they changed it in the past 14 yrs then that is not true. You have the first two years to make your decision about if the military is for you. Once you step foot in your first class of your third year then you incur a committment. If you get kicked out or decide to leave you have to sever in the enlisted ranks for a couple years. I forget exactly how many.

Right. After you sign your commit papers after your 2nd year, if you leave and dont serve you get hit with a tuition bill. I believe its 5 yrs of req service

USNA must do it a little different because I sure don't remember signing any commit papers in my third year. It was just understood you were committed. I do remember a long slow walk to that first class wondering if two more years was worth it though. Also remember in basic agreeing that if I got a pilot slot that I would do 10 years after I got my wings.

Oh well hope the transfer works out....it will be interesting to see how his former teammates treat him in two years.

He cant be worse than our starting safety Nick Coleman

Well Coleman was playing under a different DC and was playing a different position. From all accounts he has looked good and is a much better fit at safety. Also don't discount the Elko factor, I think Coleman will be our starting safety all year.
