Your Top 5 Changes on D?

Recommended Posts

Well I thought I got a free article in my email. Turns out it was just a teaser link.

Seems like pretty much what we thought, defense is well equipped to cover the pass etc..

Seems like it will be match up based for the rover. 2 TE teams will face Bilal in that spot. I'd guess 3 WR teams and more will face Tranquill in the rover spot.

What changes would you llike to see come to fruition for the ND defense?

My 5:

1. line up correctly

2. tackle well

3. Don't take risks all the time

4.. get a pass rush up front so risks are avoided

5. play with real competitive enthusiasm

Note: There's about 2 feet of snow here! Hence I have too much time on my hands!

Also found a good article about 4-2-5. My only recommendation is not to get caught up in this authors position labels. In Elko's I believe what this author has labeled money ($) would be rover and what he has ® would be strong safety

Well said. All these link together. Better Lineman will get more sacks and hurries.

Sacks and hurries and well made tackles(gang tackle, one wraps, second and third rips at the ball) cause bad decisions or Turnovers.

Turnovers can lead to shorter fields and sudden change points scored.

That's what I've heard with regards to rover too. Basically, it's going to be bilal and tranquil unless bilal proves he can't be taken off the field. Kelly was effusive in his praise for bilal against power teams.

Changes I'd like to see:

1) limit opponent big plays

2) create our own big plays (negative yardage plays and turnovers)

3) development of dline players who are now in year 3 - Micah dew-treadway, Elijah Taylor, jay Hayes (improvement from jerry tillery)

4) development of dline players who are now in their second year - Khalid Kareem and Daelin Hayes

5) that's it, maybe more development out out of the lb and secondary.

agreed. I think BVG's defense expected to much athletically from the players. Only a few teams can play lock down man to man defense with 70 of 80 yards of field behind them.

So when he blitzed safeties and linebackers(my least favorite blitz had both the MLB and SS coming on the same play) the middle of the field was so accessible.

I Have no problem with sending a Safety OR MLB but leave the other back there to play center field. Also save pressures for when you have less field to defend.

I have MAJOR issues with blitzing when you have the other team backed up.

I know lots of people say "Go big or go home" but the real purpose is limiting points so you don't wanna give up an 80 play for a chance at a 5 yard loss, in my opinion.

1. I don't want to see Tranquil trying to defend a receiver.

2. I don't want to see Tranquil trying to defend a receiver.

3. Better RZ defense

4. Force some turnovers

5. Hit! I feel Nico got that targeting call because the refs aren't use to seeing us that physical. A hard hitting team can get away with those types of plays.

One thing we need to realize about Rover is it should not be a deep coverage position, the spot on the field where the rover stays is a wider OLB regardless of his size so you will have help behind him. I think he can handle the second level of a defense but not a 4.3 guy at full speed on the third level.

I agree with the hitting comes with confidence in doing your job and being the best guy out there.

Elko's been good in the redzone because he saves some good looks for down there.

Great list davis.

Yes, yes, yes!...and I think that part will be evident....finally.

Also, and this did get better after the mustached clown left, don't over-pursue everything...keep the play in front of you. He had his guys reaching back to try and make plays so much, no wonder we missed so many tackles.

I'd also love to see them really go for the strip more often. It's an art, and you have to know when to do it (and when not to), but it sure can be effective.

1. Better tackling

2. Better angles

3. Pressure on the QB

4. Setting the edge so we can limit those sweeps and swing passes that killed us

5. Someone emerge as a leader and playmaker. I see Morgan being the leader with Coney and Crawford our playmaker.

1. Better tackling. The other guys are allowed to get yards too. But don't let a 7 yard play turn into 15.

2. Better zone exchanges. By that, I mean the front man closer to the line should not drift too far back leaving a giant hole in front of him, or the CB coming up too far or too quickly leaving a giant space gap behind him.

3. Pressure. Sacks will come if there is constant pressure, but I am not talking about sacks per se. I want to see pressure that forces offenses into making bad or early decisions. Third down was the bad guys' money down last year. It was just awful. See point 2 above.

4. Give a $h!+. You can't control the athleticism you were born with, but you can control your effort. Play like it means something to you.

5. Be consistent. Do your job every play. Don't worrry about somebody else's assignment; focus on your assignment. Plays will break down; it happens. But if somebody else screws up AND you screw up, you exacerbate the harm.

This. Well said. These are our keys. I think #4 was a product of thinking too much. Simplify the defense and let guys attack.

That's my list almost word for word. There's zero excuse for why tackling was so AWFUL, and I mean AWFUL, last season. BVG sucked, and sucked so hard, but you can't blame him for missed tackles.

your second point is what I like about Elko.

you might not get to see it perfectly because the picture shows width and not depth but the gaps or windows in this zone defense are tight. Tight enough that it forced a young Kizer to hold the bail and throw it away. It cuts off progression 1, makes the middle hard to get too and makes Kizer wait on an outbreaking route with a corner who can try to break on it, or at least Kizer fears he will..
