Did the Crossroads Project...

negatively affect our team? During the press Conference today Kelly said that in the past he hasn't had time to be as involved with the players as he is now. I read on another forum a snarky response "haven't we heard that kind of language before." That got me thinking because Kelly has said he needed to spend more time with his players before. He said it in 2012. After the debacles of 2011 and the my guys versus His Guys comments, Kelly engaged with his players in a more complete way.

2012 Kelly engages his players we go to the national championship

2013 Golson is suspended and ND loses 4 games.

2014 ND announces the Crossroads project and Kelly is forced to Fund raise for the 400 Million dollar project. His time with the team is affected, recruiting is affected the teams performance declines.

Obviously Kelly has a responsibility to notice the effect and solve it which he didn't he depended on Longo, BVG and Denbrock to maintain the program while he was out of the way but he hired poorly and the program suffered. My theory about Crossroads negatively affecting the program is not to free Kelly from culpability but it could explain how things Got as bad as they got before he realized it.

Going to the weight room at 5:30 AM

Eating Breakfast with the players

Going to player meetings

Before:

Not enough hours in the day.

Stuck in the offensive staff room

Learned alot by interviewing players..

So... either he wasn't taking care of the primary function of his job, producing a winning football team.

Or... his primary job function, as far as the university is concerned, is to bring in cash from us poor suckers, no matter the quality of the product on the field.

Considering he is still employed after the debacle of last season, I think we know what ND administration values more.

He's still employed bc there weren't any better options.

Coaches fare differently at different programs. One might fail while at the helm of team A, yet thrive under team B. Im still shocked we didnt give someone else a shot. It should be obvious what we have and that it wont be getting any better, but there are those who still want to give the benefit of the doubt after the good part of a decade.

True, but what if Kelly's best attribute as a coach is not being a coach. Kelly seems to be pretty good at schmoozing. Maybe his players will buy it. Perhaps the best fit for him is to be the face of the team, while the coaches do the coaching.

That isn't how I'd want my team run, but maybe it will work.

Or maybe he really can't help himself and he'll be back running the offense week 5 on the way to a 6 win year.

Then if his best attribute is not being a coach, we are wasting over 3 mil a year to pay a guy to talk to the media. I want a head coach who leads his assistants. Someone who assistants can look up to and learn from.

I agree and I'd have had no problem with them showing him the door.

However, since he is here, maybe it is best that he isn't actually coaching much.

The football aspect of Crossroads is a small part of the project.

With a $10 billion endowment, it is highly unlikely that Notre Dame needed Kelly to be in dereliction of his football duties by being a salesman for Crossroads.

During Kelly's tenure at Notre Dame he has made more changes - turf, jumbotron, piped in music, tunnel smoke, no more Sat mass, no more player walk from mass etc. etc- than all the coaches coach combined since I've been watching. He obviously thinks a lot about things other than how his football team blocks and tackles and has from day 1.

Endowment reportedly closer to 10B but agree with your comment/point....

One of his obligations is to visit the Fan Clubs around the country. There is over 100 and he realized that it can`t be done in one year.

At one time he was trying to divide the traveling time between coaches. I don`t thing it happened but not sure. It takes a huge amount of time.
