LasVegasIrish 0
Specifically stated that he was looking for a play-caller for the OC position. Refreshing to hear if true. Also stated that changes needed to made, not only in personnel but it how they do/run things with the program. Hoping it finally clicked. This jives with what a poster with inside knowledge has been saying on another board. Namely, ND is finally taking steps to put the program on a level playing field with other football powers, as well as BK taking more of a CEO role as he transitions out. FaithInIrish Forever 5,570
Brian, you are the best... thanks man.... thanks Faith My pleasure guys was starving for some first hand information. That was as culpable as I have ever heard Kelly. His tone was somber and direct. Very few Jokes. "I went to hire a play caller on offense" The defensive players enjoyed my presence. Long, "sees the game through my eyes..running the ball to close games" Elko brings like a Chuck Martin- like, down home joy. I expect in some ways a return to 2010. I think ND will try to go fast again. Schell- Remember the game you and I went too in 14? Those are some of the RPO's that Long runs [ame] [/ame]

How hard was/is it to recognize that your S&C program sucks? How hard is it -over the winter when there's nothing else to do for God's sake - to keep track of how hard your player's and S&C coach are working? He was negligent in basic HC duties. To keep him as a "CEO transitioning out" is stupid.
Fifth Horseman 0
Loved the video of Elko. The dude seems to get "it," whatever that might be. Regardless of who is coaching next year at this time, I really hope he sticks around.

Regardless of who is coaching next year at this time, I really hope he sticks around. Elko will be a head coach very soon. If ND opens up sooner than later, don't rule him out. He's an Ivy Leaguer who knows his football and the benefits of a great educational institution.

Don't get me wrong, he's smart, but he seems like he can teach it like the fun science teacher in school that the kids relate too.
davislove 0
The question is how much can you believe coming out of coach kelly's mouth? I mean Trump's nickname for him is Pinocchio. Is chip really calling plays or did he say that to get Temple and Georgia to study Memphis playcalling and not ND's ? Or Chip really does call plays to take the heat if the offense struggles and Kelly can take over playcalling later. Hard for me to think BK is gonna hand over the quarterbacks to tommy without supervision. Looking at his staff both coaching and administrative, I'm surprised he doesn't have someone overseeing the players classwork and grades. He should be able to stay ahead of kids flunking out a little better if he made it a priority. I thought Weis had someone on his staff doing such IIRC. Also, I notice Greg Hudson is gone. I can't find that he took another job. Was he fired or just didn't want to staff on as a support staff after not being hired as permanent DC

Jersey Irish 207
I like ELKO because he doesn't seem to be a "intellectual" philosopher coach. Don't get me wrong, he's smart, but he seems like he can teach it like the fun science teacher in school that the kids relate too. When Elko said this in his presser, it was music to my ears!! “There’s going to be a foundation of what we want our kids to play like. And then with the scheme, we’re going to put them in positions to be successful. “Whether we’re a 4-2-5, or a 3-4 or a 4-3, we’re going to play hard. We’re going to be aggressive. We’re going to tackle well. We’re going to be physical. We’re going to come off blocks. Those things are more important than the X’s and O’s picture.” Awesome! If you watched the PC, Kelly believes he can't control the line of scrimmage with quality defensive linemen, due to academic restrictions that prevent him from recruiting those elite defensive linemen. So, Elko is his third try at trying to compensate. The problem is, the better teams do recruit elite defensive linemen in and they ALSO tackle well, are aggressive, are physical and come off blocks. I expect us to be marginally better, but as long as recruiting is weak, nothing is going to change to bring us to an elite level. The administration is content with being average. It's obvious. Not sure why you are trying to combine Elko's and Kelly's comments. Elko was pure new coach rah, rah stuff. Not reading too much into it since I have never heard a coach say the opposite (i.e. we'll play soft, miss tackles, etc.) I think that Kelly's comments were to the point that he believes that ND cannot recruit DL to the point that he can count on having 8 quality DL to run a 4-3 every down. As a result he wants to be able to mix it up and run a combination of 4-3 and 3-4 and he was attracted to Elko for that reason. Putting aside the question as to whether or not, ND can recruit elite DL in numbers, I personally believe that a defense that can play different fronts effectively is best in college given the limited time teams have to prepare each week. If Elko can teach the 4-2-5, 3-4, and 4-3 with results, then that will be great. For me, the key is to let the defense simply play fast but make the opposing offense have to think each play, slowing them down. My opinion is that both ND's offensive and defensive schemes were not allowing players to play fast, letting less talented teams compete. In terms of DL recruiting, given the year that Kelly and team recruited Lynch, Tuitt, and Williams, one must think that it is possible to recruit DL at a higher level than is currently happening. Having a defense that actually gets some sacks is probably one of the best ways to attract better linemen.
