MantyIrish
Some of the comments in this thread are so ignorant it's befuddling I concur. I find the hire interesting and am willing to give him a chance. As has been said coaching vs playing are two different things. Worst D1 QB of all time is a bit of a stretch. Guy threw 61 TD's to 37 picks in 45 games, over 7300 yards and 59.9%. Not a draft pick, but not the worst ever either.
edcubby
Tommy Legend!!! Returns!!! I Loooooove it!!!! Not much talent...did it all on blood and guts!!! Fought with BK...drove him crazy...and preserved. Understands the offense even though his ability didn't allow him to do most of the things required. He'll be good with the starter and the backup. This is a good hire! The return of Tommy Legend!!!

Always brought his lunch pail. A real blue collar player. Not flashy, just fundamentally sound. A scrapper. A real gym rat!!

Arm Stength & 40 time have little to do with the ability to coach or manage - For every Wooden, Lombardi, or Landry, there is one (actually there are more) Alston, Dressen, (showing my age) Belichick, Francona, Maddon, and yes, Saben and Meyer who were less than all americans.... give the guy a chance, he may not have met your expectations as a player, but he bled for the team, so why rag on him before he has started coasching? Plus he kicked a cop in the goolies - that's got to count for something, right?
jbrown_9999
All the negativity is hard to read through. Tommy is a bright kid that knows that offense backward and forwards and he played several years in it. I'm pleased with this move. Is Long bringing his offense or running Kelly's offense? If the former, then does Rees have experience with Long's system?
Fifth Horseman
He's coming in to serve as a buffer between Kelly and Wimbush. If his job is to take the beatings so Wimbush doesn't have to, it may be worth it. And there have DEFINITELY been far worse D1 QBs. For those of you who are so pissed about this move, go take out a newspaper ad for it, since it worked so well the last time that happened. Good point. Makes my point weaker ^ , but I don't have any evidence to suggest Tommy is a poor choice other than him being a young coach. Playing success does not determine coaching success. EddieAngel
Those who can't do teach. The important part about this position is knowing how to be successful and being able to teach someone how to do it. I don't know if TR is capable of doing either of those things, he might be skilled at making the best out of what he has but that is the kind of qualification you look for at Central Michigan, not at Notre Dame. Still, I am not going to set a couch on fire before the season starts, change is good. “Like a soldier standing long under fire, any change comes as a relief.” ― Ben Harper, Diamonds On The Inside

davislove
Some people act as though Tommy cheated on them with their best friend. I like the hire despite Tommy not being my favorite player. As a recruiter he can really sell being a QB at ND and relate to them because he's played for BK. He's still young enough to get out on the field and teach the guys. Imagine if we had someone that could actually teach Kizer to throw a back shoulder pass. Rees was a zero star recruit when he committed to ND and beat out a 5 star. And unlike our recent run of quarterbacks, Tommy didn't run for greener pastures when he was beaten out. And unless Kelly gets fired or leaves, we'll finally have a qb coach that sticks around a while. Rees is years away from a coordinator job other then that whats a vertical move? Then again Tommy could get himself arrested and fired.

AtLeastMySisWasIrish
Question for those vocally against this move, please tell me where coaches Gruden, Saban, Meyer, Kelly, Bowden, Herman, Belichcek and Lombardi played their football? # of All American honors and years played in the NFL? Point is obvious and if you need an explanation, then sorry, I can't help you. Further, Kelly has said since day 1 of Tommy's graduation, he would be welcome back as an assistant if he wished to return. It's too well documented one's play has little to do with coaching acumen and while I think the extremists are at it again with the hyperbole, he was not the worst QB in the history of the World, or ND for that matter. Additionally, Mike McCoy may not have been the best HC in the NFL but he was an excellent OC and in demand immediately following his termination. Would think Tommy was paying attention and learning, especially with Rivers as the QB. GA for Fitzgerald at N'western wasn't a bad place to start. Son of a coach... several former players and teammates have spoken favorably of the hire and to me, along with Kelly's comments immediately following his graduation, tells me to look at this move positively. I saw a question asked earlier about who's offense and from what had been reported by SB Trib and 24/7 Sports, (I think), it will be Kelly's system with Long calling the plays. Thus makes further sense since Tommy knows the playbook and coaching nature of Kelly intimately. This move also has as much to do with Wimbush as it does with getting Book and possibly Avery ready as there are questions as to their ability to step in should Wimbush go down. Much to develop with this move but the hatred by some is expected and that faction would bitch if we hired Christ himself as coach of Divine Intervention. With the other hires receiving universal positive reaction, benefit of the doubt goes to Kelly and anxious to see how it plays out. GO IRISH!
